    New Stadium Ideas

As much as I love the Joe the Wings really need a new arena to play in.... Building a new arena behind the Fox would really bring that area to life year round and would make going to Wings game more enjoyable in my opinion... The Joe sits in an awkward spot which really creates problems for people when they are leaving the games... If a new arena was built behind the fox they could put the concourse at street level which would eliminate the need for the steps and would allow for more exits to the building... I like the idea of an older style arena, but I honestly wouldn't want an exact replica of Olympia Stadium because it isn't Olympia.... Adding a sign at the main entrance like they had on Olympia would be really neat along with certain other design elements, but not an exact copy..... And the only other thing I wouldn't want to see would be parking garages built around the arena.... There are plenty of parking option in downtown Detroit since people seem to value parking lots over saving historical buildings, so there honestly wouldn't be a need for more... If people can find parking spots for Tigers games they could walk across the street to a new hockey arena... What they really need to do is build up the streets around the arena with newer building that look older to match the area which would allow bars and restaurants to open around the area... This would really create some density that you don't see in Detroit like you used to since we're loosing so many of the buildings to parking lots in the downtown area... Just my 2 cents...
  2. I don't post here often but I read the forums everyday.... This is just my opinion so I would appreciate it if people don't flame me if you don't agree with what I'm saying..... Even though we lost the way that we did you still have to admit it was a great year for Red Wings hockey.... They played well the entire season and made it to game 7 of the Stanley cup finals, so I am personally very proud of the team and what they accomplished this year.... Even though we lost, the Red Wings showed that they are still the model NHL team and the fans showed the world why we are Hockeytown USA.... It really astonishes me how people absolutely love this team when they win and are so fast to turn on those same players when we loose... It's true that Hossa didn't have a good finals or even playoffs, but he played great the entire season.... Players have bad games and series like Hossa did this year and come back the next year and have a great year.... If I remember correctly Pavel had a few playoff runs like Hossa did in the past and had great seasons after.... You'd be foolish to say you would never want him on your team because of a few bad series..... What it really comes down too it people here are too spoiled from the success that we've had over the last 15 years... You can't win every time you make it to the finals and unfortunately that happened to us this year.... People need to cool off and remember all the great moments the Wings have provided us in the last season.... Hopefully this makes the Wings want it more and they'll come out next year with a better effort overall... As much as I don't like it when Crosby complains you have to admit he's a great player and the Penguins are a great team.... They played better than the Wings did the last two games and deserve to win because of their effort... Go Wings!!!

Kirk Maltby to play Game 3

That's nice to hear.... It has to suck to play the entire year and then get scratched in the playoffs.... I've always been a fan of Malty so it'll be great to see him back in the lineup for game three... Hopefully these few games off of the ice gave him time to refocus and will lead to a great game on Thursday.... Go Wings!!
  4. Yah I just saw that as well.... It just shows that there are major problems with the league when calls like the Stuart call and the disallowed goal are considered to be part of the game.... I understand mistakes are made, but they shouldn't be made to the extent that they were last night....

    New arena?

Either way, a major city needs a modern convention center and Cobo isn't one... Tearing the thing down leaves Detroit without the NAIAS which is the primary use for Cobo each year so that's not going to happen... And you really can't count what the city officials are saying since the majority of them are a complete joke anyways.... Cobo needs to be modernized and expanded in a smart way so it will remain a viable convention center for years to come..... If the city and suburbs could actually work together for a change a renovation/expansion could happen soon since the region needs the NAIAS....

    New arena?

You know, I've never understood why people wish they wouldn't tear down old stadiums... You heard it a lot last year with Tiger Stadium and now you hear about the Joe.... There's no point in leaving old stadiums standing since it just adds another abandoned building in the city, which isn't what Detroit needs... I know there's a ton of history at the Joe and Tiger Stadium but if people don't want to see them torn down then Comerica shouldn't have been built and the Joe should get renovated.... For the good of the City of Detroit the Wings should get a new arena since it would benefit both parties... The Red Wings would have a new modern facility to play in and the city would be able to do something with the valuable riverfront property the Joe currently occupies... Now I love the atmosphere of the Joe since it really fits the gritty feel of the city and when you go there you're there to watch hockey and that's it, but the Wings could use a new arena.... If it's built to look like an old school arena from the outside and is brought out behind the Fox that whole area would be a great place to watch a game and spend a night in Detroit.... And with the Joe gone the city could expand Cobo into that area if they wanted too and do something more with the riverfront in that area....

    Thoughts on Downey

Long time reader of the forums but I've never had the urge to post..... I personally love players like Downey even though they don't contribute to putting points on the board every night.... If you look around the league roll players are often one of the fan favorites of every team and Downey is no different in Detroit... He's played 4 games this season and every time he's on the ice the people at the Joe are on the edge of their seats which is what you want with a sports team... You want your fans to be engaged in the game and not just sitting there until you score a goal.... His style of play has always been loved in Detroit because it quite frankly fits in with the mentality of the city; hardworking and blue collar... Now I know the Wings have so many talented players in the minors that are just on the bubble to get into the lineup but they're all young and have their whole careers in front of them... Having a 4th line that ups the tempo in the game and contributes with goals every so often shouldn't be a bad thing with a team like the Wings since everyone is so talented.. Their top three lines are more talented than some entire teams in the NHL so they should provide the goals needed to take the Wings far into the playoffs, while maintaining a tougher 4th line like we've seen in the last week... That's just my two cents on the subject so please don't flame me like I've seen in parts of this thread.... Go Wings!!!!

    2008-09 NHL Schedule Released

Seems like an alright schedule.... Toronto for the home opener should be a really neat game, but it's too bad we don't play in Toronto as well.... One of my biggest complaints is the new years eve game not happening this year.... Thats something I've always remembered being so excited to watch every year since I was a kid, but this proves even more tradition doesn't matter to the NHL......

    What to do in Detroit

Just a heads up with Pizza Papalis, make sure you give yourself plenty of time since it can take 45 minutes to get your pizza if you get deep dish, and not to mention the wait that you might run into with the amount of people that are gonna be down there tomorrow.... I hope you enjoy it since it's the best pizza I've ever had besides deep dish in Chicago.... And if i were you I'd stop by Layfayette Coney Island after the game for a coney or two.... Go Wings and have fun downtown!!!!

the DON'T FINE AL petition thread

Yah I just saw Don on cbc and i'm glad he doesn't agree with the decision about Al.... He's been doing it for such a long time, why is it a problem now??? It's a joke just like Bettman and his time as comish....

    Does NBC change their schedule?

I'm pretty sure they're headquarters is in New York so they jump on any Rangers game in the Garden since it's pretty much right down the street.... And I have to agree with what everyone else said, it does get really annoying watching the same teams every week on NBC....

    Wings/Rangers in Yankee Stadium?

When it comes down to it they're trying to attract a more mainstream audience with that game who wouldn't normally watch hockey in the hopes of broadening the game... As great as Detroit and Toronto would be an original six matchup means nothing to most people in the US..... As much as I can't stand it when you put a New York team on tv people watch it since it's a New York team, so having the game in Yankee Stadium will probably be great for ratings.. I just keep hoping that one day Bettman and the heads of the NHL will realize they need to do something to make the traditional NHL audience happy, and this game would certainly do that.....

Are the Wings going to get a new arena?

I've been reading these forums for a while but this thread finally made me register so I can post... I'd personally love for the Wings to get a new arena since the Joe is getting up there as far as age goes.. I still think it's great to watch hockey in since we're used to it and I love the old school feel to it but there are other things you have to take into consideration besides hockey. Illitch looses a lot of other events like concerts to the Palace since it's a newer arena with more to offer, so in the end it's bringing people out of downtown Detroit for these events and taking money out of Illitch's pockets... Also take into consideration that Cobo needs to be expanded which could happen if the Joe was demolished in the next few years... If we do get a new arena I think it would be best behind the Fox Theater... If you've ever been back there it's just a few random buildings and a lot of surface parking lots which hurt that part of the city... The stadium districts are fine the way they are and wouldn't benefit that much with a new hockey arena in the area... If they build behind the Fox it would really bring back that area of downtown Detroit and make it a place people would walk around on most days... New bars, restaurants, and whatever else could spring up back there which would really fill in another hole in the downtown area...
