Thanks Matt, really appreciate you bringing these back this year.

#2663227 3/29 GDT - Red Wings at Canadiens - 7:30 PM EST

Oh, jeez. I didn't realize he'd gotten a misconduct. Is that part of the instigator rule or something?

That is part of the instigator rule. You get 2 for instigating, 5 for fighting and a 10 minute misconduct. If the other player does not receive a fighting major then it is a game misconduct.

#2653275 Vancouver should make the black retro uniforms permanent

These are my personal favourite Canuck uniforms. Love how the thicker stripes 'pop' on the black uniform, compared to the next black iteration in the 90's. Also, for some reason I just love the yellow one.

Just thought I'd give everyone hear a headsup that the people behind the nation websites have started a Red Wings site. They have a series of NHL team focused blogs that often focuses on advanced analytics, and a number of their writers have gone on to work for NHL teams. My many Canuck fan friends have talked about how awesome their Canuck blog CanucksArmy is.

Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out:

#2646595 The Elite Dylan Larkin

Posted by nosyt612 on 07 January 2016 - 10:54 PM

I have a question then.

Do we consider Crosby and Ovechkin elite in their rookie years - basically from the get-go? And I mean elite among all players not just looking at the 2005/06 rookies.

Because it seems like the general consensus (except Bill) is that Larkin is not elite yet. I'm wondering how people feel about Crosby and Ovechkin in their rookie years. Would you have labelled them as elite their first year? Or "not yet"

To me it's pretty obvious they were elite players immediately. I still can't believe Gretz left Crosby off the Olympic team. I think what a lot of people forget too is that Crosby is a year younger than Ovie, who had been playing pro in the Super League for 4 years already. In Crosby's 19 year old year he jumped to 120 points and winning the Art Ross. All of this is no knock on Larkin, as these are two of the best young players ever to play in the NHL, but just that Larkins having a great year for a rookie, but has to continue on this path and improving for a few years before we can talk about elite.

Well, you got me there Bobby. You debunked my ass pretty good on that one.

Just off the top of my head Ekblad made it last year, and Crosby and Ovechkin obviously would have made it in their first years, but it happened to be an Olympic year.

#2636628 Abby Signs 7-year, 29.75 mil Extension

Posted by nosyt612 on 12 November 2015 - 02:06 PM

Fair enough.

I still think Ericcson should be paid as a bottom pairing defenceman though :)

After looking at the average salaries for mid pairing dmen I'd say Quincey isn't a horrible price but only because his play has improved. At the time the contract was made it was bad

I don't mind Erriccson as much as it seems everyone else does, but I'm obviously in the minority. Agreed on Quincey, he's really turned around his play from when he first got back to the D.

This is true, but these are #1/2 Dmen and are being compared with guys who are supposed to be 3,4.

To compare salaries of 3,4 dmen:

Cam Fowler 4M

Jack Johnson 4.2M

Johnny Oduya 3.7M

Dmitri Kulikov 4.5M

Ryan Mcdonagh 4.7M

Kevin Klein 3M

Jon Carlson 4M

I'd take these players over Quincey/Ericsson, with the exception maybe being Jack Johnson and Oduya

Although these salaries do prove that mid pairing Dmen make 4-5M so if Quincey is a mid pairing guy he isn't overpaid. I'll agree there

Agreed on not taking those two, and I'd maybe include Klein. But the rest of the contracts we're all signed when the guys were young, and not the talents they currently are. Fowler signed his when he was 20, Carlson when he was 22, and McDonagh 23. Also these were their first chance at some money, while their teams have more bargaining power. You're not comparing apples to apples, the going price of mid level free agent defensemen these days is in the mid 4s to 5s. in order to get the contracts you're comparing them to we need to develop some of our own young dmen.

Posted by nosyt612 on 12 November 2015 - 01:16 PM

He shouldn't be a top 4 dman...that money could have went elsewhere to a legit top 4. I don't understand how its ok to pay him that much just because we were forced to give him top minutes. He plays top pairing minutes even though he plays like a 6th dman

Quincey is overpaid, Kindl is here next season as well. Even Green is overpaid. Abby's contract will be bad in 3-4 years.

#1,2 defenceman who make roughly the same as Quincey and Green:

Roman Josi 4M

OEL 5.5M

Keith 5.5M

Adam Larsson 4M

Yandle 3M

You're kinda cherry picking contracts, without providing the context in which they were signed. Yandle actually makes over 5 million, with Phoenix retaining salary to produce that cap number. Keith signed one of those crazy lifetime deals like Zetterberg and Hossa which keeps his cap hit down, otherwise he'd be one of the top salary guys in the league. Larsson is having a breakout year and finally looking like the top prospect he was, but before this year he hadn't been great. Josi signed his contract 3 years ago when he was 22 and just breaking out. OEL also was 21 when he signed his contract, and will be in for a payday on his next contract.

#2576758 Red Wings acquire Erik Cole, conditional 3rd from Stars

Posted by nosyt612 on 01 March 2015 - 07:47 PM

I like this trade, always been a Cole fan. Has great speed, and is gonna have 20 goals by the end of the year. The wings got even more depth scoring, by the end of the year depending on Zetterberg's health we could have 5 20 goal scorers.

#2556906 Datsyuk vs Nyquist

Not sure if this was already posted somewhere or if it deserves it's own thread but I got a kick out of this and thought others might.

So who scored it better? (Both on Luongo 11 years apart)

#2541641 Monthly schedule wallpapers?

Whatever you make, I will accommodate

Same here.  I think Matts idea for making the highest res in both 16:9 and 16:10 and then people can scale down for lower res versions is the best.  Saves Matt some work.

This thread always makes me happy.  Means the season is just around the corner.

#2530505 What's best for Mantha?

Posted by nosyt612 on 07 July 2014 - 09:26 PM

This is a link to the puck daddy article for the 2012 nhlpa player poll, unfortunately it does not appear to be on the cbc's website any longer.

Detroit ranks second as the team players would most like to play for and if my memory is correct Babs was in the top 3 for coaches that players wanted to play for.  Everyone is overreacting to us not getting every free agent we want.  As marcaractac laid out there's often good reasons people sign elsewhere.

Edit:  Apparently I don't know how to work the internet sometimes, here's a link to the player poll (Babcock is 4th btw)

#2530424 What's best for Mantha?

Good point about Babcock...until he is gone, this team is stuck in a rut.  Legwand waived his NTC because he wanted to play here, but after what Babcock did to him, he bolted.  Babcock is the issue why no good UFA wants to come here...and its no secret why Canada is going in a different direction for their Olympic team next time.

The back to back Gold medals is a big underachievement.
