#2545583 10/29 GDT - Red Wings 4 @ Capitals 2

I personally hate nicknames in sports.  They're seldom any good and everyone wants everyone to have one.  Not every player should have a nickname.

On the Wings, I can think only of Mule and Goose that have "real," non-shortened-name nicknames.

There are forced nicknames that I'm not a fan of at all (or things like Goose that come from a bad pronounciation of Nyquist's name).

Then there are the vast majority of nicknames that just make sense to use. Z. Pav/Dats. Gordie. Danny. Mike/Babs. Nicknames are very much part of real life and not something that only happens in sports.

And I gotta say that I never imagined us being 9 games into the season with one of the biggest issues about the team being whether to say Nestrasil or Nesty. I thought for sure we'd talk about why Daniel Cleary is still in the lineup or why we re-signed Kyle Quincey.

This coming from the guy who tried to get that whole "Deisel" thing going? Aka "the worst nickname ever".  You're trying to hard.

Those other three guys have earned nick-names. Mule came from Yzerman himself. You are not Yzerman, and Nestrasil is no Franzen. He's slightly better than Emmerton. Emdog - another horrible moniker btw.

Nesty comes from Babcock himself...

But I guess nicknames = serious business.

I don't see Nestrasil as ever being more than a third / forth line player in this league. However, my intention was not to bash Nestrasil, but to state that he should not be compared to either Franzen or Nyquist. He's not even close to the potential of those two, in my opinion.

Yeah, it's not an anti-Nestrasil thing, but when you've got the guy compared to one of your better goal scorers on the team... I don't get going after Mule every chance possible. When he's coasting and playing below his ability, sure, but why dog him when he's playing well? The guy is making less than four million, and when you compare him to other people being paid about that much, it's worth the cold streaks he goes through. He's started the year off with five points in four games. Let it go.

I wasn't really talking about Nestrasil being compared to Franzen, or Nyquist. Just the casual "why is Nestrasil in the lineup" comments that pop up pretty often. Or saying we should waive him, when Jurco is not impressing at all and we can send him down.

Nestrasil is very new to the NHL. If he is starting out on this level and can add a bit of confidence when it comes to his offensive game, he will be a very solid player. He's not a defensive liability at all and he seems to be just quietly doing a good job regardless of situation. I can understand why he's not impressive to a lot of people, but he's been solid and he has earned the icetime he's getting.

That's a nice quote to read.

Trotz gave a lot of credit to the Wings and most of all Dats and Z. He knows them well from his time in Nashville.

I guess when there's nothing much to complain about people will pick on a guy like Nestrasil for no reason. The guy is hardly making any mistakes on the ice. He's hard on the puck, good on the forecheck, makes great decisions defensively, stays calm under pressure.. reminds me a little bit of Sheahan who also isn't as flashy as Tatar and Nyquist but just does a lot of good things. Easy to see why Babcock has kept Nesty in the lineup.

He just needs confidence. He's had chances, I could see him really benefit from getting a goal.

#2542600 Pavel Datsyuk update?

Posted by dat's sick on 20 October 2014 - 12:25 PM

God forbid nostril gets scratched. He really hasn't impressed me much, give Weiss a few games to get going

Nestrasil is doing a lot of things right. He's heavy on the puck, making nice plays defensively, and he's had some good looks offensively but hasn't gotten anything to go in. If I'm the coach I'm icing the team that has the best chance of getting me wins, not playing a guy to "get him going".

another quick word on Glenny. His emergence along with Sheahan's would allow us to offer Helm in a deal for something we need. While Helm still has value. This team doesn't need all three, especially when Dats comes back to take up another center spot. Nothing personal against Helm...

Maybe if Helm was the kind of piece that would land us a top pairing d-man I would consider it. But I think he is more valuable to us than he is in a trade. We always seem to be a much better team when he's playing than when he isn't.

I guess if Buffalo for example would give us Myers ONLY if they get Helm I wouldn't say no, but we know everyone wants guys like Nyquist/Mantha/Jurco.

I don't see what's so bad about the lines. Kid line together, Z and Franzen together, Nestrasil-Helm-Nyquist as a 3rd line compared to Bertuzzi-Andersson-Cleary as a 3rd line last opening night, and a solid 4th line.

I'm pretty excited to get things started.

#2538786 Datsyuk to play Thursday? Weiss to be a healthy scratch?

Posted by dat's sick on 07 October 2014 - 01:43 PM

Remember that things can still happen before thursday. And even if it doesn't, it won't be long before Ouellet is on the team one way or another. Babcock has clearly stated his wish by practicing XO with Quincey and having Kindl/Lashoff as extras.

#2533354 Tatar Signs 3 Year Deal $2.75 mill AAV

Posted by dat's sick on 30 July 2014 - 11:00 AM

Got to think with the kids starting to mature that the power play will improve. Having a capable power play nets us like 35+ extra goals at least a year. Tatar, Sheahan and Jurco's numbers can only go up at this point ( assuming they stay relatively healthy)

The team has to stress the importance of having a consistent power play. It was one of our major causes for losing games last year.

We saw some good things from the PP in the 2nd half of the year. Tatar, Nyquist and Sheahan should be a good 2nd PP unit, with Z-Dats-Franzen as #1. But it's still on the blueline we need improvement for our PP to become really dangerous. Need to see what Smith can do, and Sproul should get some looks during the year.

#2533226 Tatar Signs 3 Year Deal $2.75 mill AAV

Posted by dat's sick on 28 July 2014 - 09:24 PM

too much money. He best get 25-30 goals in each of his years...this is the reason the salary cap was put in place. There is no way a sub twenty goal scoring RFA should be anywhere near this amount. But it is Ken Holland. He hasn't changed anything in his approach. This means Diesel will get at least $4M.

You should probably look up what young 20 goal scorers get in this league these days. This is a good deal if he never gets more than 20, if he gets 25+ it's fantastic. It's also worth noting that Tatar is very much his own product, he hasn't been feeding off Dats or Z or the PP for his production.

#2532494 Hockey News: Detroit has the easiest schedule

Posted by dat's sick on 18 July 2014 - 02:00 PM

People forget so quickly that we are TERRIBLE against bad teams. Remember all the barn burners vs Florida and the Isles last year? Easiest doesn't mean squat, if we still healthy we'll have a shot at the playoffs. But since we're bringing back the exact same roster as last year, should we expect the injuries to just go away?

Out toughest injuries were to Z, Pav and Weiss. All 3 are highly unlikely to miss as much time this season. It would be extreme bad luck. I also think Helm finally has a good chance to stay healthy now that he gets a full summer and camp to work out 100%., Injuries won't stop but we have to get some kind of 'break' from it eventually... we can't keep being one of the top 3 teams in mangames lost year after year, I refuse to believe we can't get a "healthy" season.

#2532346 Babcock Interview on 105.1 this morning

Posted by dat's sick on 17 July 2014 - 02:03 PM

I like Babs a lot and this was a good interview, but I have no trust left him in whatsoever when he says "the best players will play."

It does sound though like Babs really wants to find a way to integrate the kids on defense sooner rather than later. Which who can blame him when his other options include Quincey, Kindl and Lashoff?

Babs also said the Wings didn't hand out any bad contracts in free agency. Out on the lake when the Quincey deal happened?

Babs did keep guys like Bert and Cleary as healthy scratches even when we had injuries. Though it took a while before it happened.

I like the sound of Pavel's knee maybe being 'fixed' and that Z hasn't felt this good since 08. If those two can have a relatively healthy season it'll make such a huge difference for us.

#2529554 TANK IT! 2014-2015 Season

Posted by dat's sick on 02 July 2014 - 04:05 PM

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm really excited about our forward group I'd almost agree with the OP.

But having Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan and possibly Jurco on the team from day 1?? Super exciting compared to our opening night lineup last season. Add to that a hopefully healthy Weiss, possibly hungry to prove himself, and the fact that Z and Pavel are always amazing to watch when they're healthy. They should also be playing together.

Of course, the defense puts a damper on things. I hope and pray Holland is not done. At the very least Kindl or Lashoff should be moved out to make room for Ouellet or Marchenko. Otherwise the one thing to look forward to is the continued development of Dekeyser and Smith.

I'm as disappointed as most with how yesterday went, but overall I actually do LIKE our team. What I wanted this offseason was at least 1 new d-man, but that's about it. We didn't get it (yet), but I could live with that. Maybe there will be some options at the trade deadline. Maybe injuries will open up a spot for a kid and that kid will have a Nyquist/Sheahan/Jurco impact. Every season is full of possibilities, even if Holland has so far done a really poor job of building excitement for this upcoming one.

#2526997 Ehrhoff or Niskanen

Posted by dat's sick on 29 June 2014 - 04:56 PM

How about Sproul and Marchenko instead??

Sproul is probably not at all ready defensively. Give him a minimum of 1 more year in GR. Marchenko should be up next season but he should be more of a Kindl/Lashoff replacement, not as the replacement for Quincey in the top 4 which is what we're looking for Niskanen/Ehrhoff/Boyle/etc to be.

#2526493 Dylan Larkin - Highest draft pick since 1991

Posted by dat's sick on 28 June 2014 - 06:40 AM

I always find the reactions to draft picks amusing because, come on, none of us knows anything at this point. In 2-3 years we'll start seeing who made good selections or not this draft.

That said this seems like a solid pick, filling our need for a good center prospect. Sounds like he is a "safe" pick and I'm fine with that, in our development program he should have a very good opportunity to reach his potential.
