I think it's about time for Alfie to get his first goal  :siren:

Yeah, he's looked great the last two games, first goal will come soon.

Yes his shortcomings were everyone else's fault except his.

Its simple.  If you can't play defense, you can't play.  He was a liability on the ice, and I fully expected and agreed with Babs benching him after that performance.  His turnovers weren't the result of playing on the fourth line.  Nor were they the result of him only playing a few minutes.  Nor were they a result of the rest of the team playing poorly.  His decisions with the puck and without the puck were entirely his to make, and for the most part, they were clumsy, ill-timed, poor decisions that didn't produce anything productive for the team, and often ended up with puck on an opponent's stick.

I really disagree with that view of his performance in that game and I'm not even one of the people most upset about him not being in the lineup.

Basically I think he was put in a position where it's extremely difficult for him to succeed so it's not surprising he didn't do great. How many guys on this team can you put on the 4th line with Emmerton and Miller and expect that line to be productive? Datsyuk and Zetterberg MAYBE, and that's it.

Most likely Tatar will be overthinking everything he does now because he believes he has to set the world on fire in order to stay in the lineup. Most players, especially young ones, actually perform better if they're given some trust by their coach and don't have to play with the pressure of being out of the lineup if they have a bad game. Simple truth is that going by what Tatar did last season both in the NHL and AHL, and by what he did in camp, he should be cemented on one of our top 3 lines this year. He should play 82 games and he should play on the PP.. Like everyone is saying, we're struggling to score goals and we have a guy who LOVES to put pucks in the net on the 4th line or not even in the lineup. Sense, this does not make.

Anyway, I hope Babcock's comment is directed towards Holland. He needs to make the necessary decisions that enables/forces Babcock to play the best possible lineup, you know, the one that includes two of the best offensive talents we have.

I thought Tatar played terribly in his game this year. Defensively unsound, uncharacteristic turn-overs, and this was all against the opposing team's bottom line players. I want the kid to get another crack at the lineup, but based on his first game I would be hesitant to play him in the top 6, against top-6 opponents. I think Babs comments are more toward Tatar needing to step up his game if he wants to play. Fortunately it's a long year, and the roster has been shuffled after every loss so far, so he will have plenty of opportunities to be more responsible on the defensive side of the game.
Anyway, I'm excited to see how this one turns out. Abby and Weiss should be good energy for the second line, and Bert had some unique chemistry with Datsyuk when they've played together in the past.

He looked bad playing a couple of minutes in a role completely wrong for him against one of the best teams in the league in a game where the entire Wings lineup was awful?

Shocking.

#2442620 Devils sign Brunner 2 yrs. $2.5 million AAV

Brunner just scored a nice goal. EPIC FAIL signing Alfy and letting Brunner go.

I wish we had signed Brunner, but that's a bit premature.. 79 games to go. Besides like mentioned we offered him a deal, and most likely if he had accepted Cleary would have been the odd man out not Alfie.

Well this game is incredibly dull.

Tatar in the lineup tomorrow, please. Take your pick between Cleary, Bert and Sammy as to who gets benched.

3rd period comeback is up to Z and D, they're the only ones who came to play.

#2441197 10/2 GDT : Sabres 1 at Red Wings 2

Alfie looks like he's been playing for the Red Wings all his career. Fits right in with his two-way play and smart decisions. Doesn't hurt that he's got that shot either.

Defense looked very good, impressed with Ericsson in particular. Dekeyser was also good to see, he's picking up where he left off.

Offense looked great the first half, definitely sloppy and slow the 2nd half though. Hard to tell which is the real deal but maybe it's somewhere in between. What we saw was that Cleary, Bertuzzi and Samuelsson are definitely not as useless as some people around here say, but at the same time I definitely want to see one of them out of the lineup in favor of Tatar ASAP. Just add some speed and creativity in that bottom 6, I think against better teams than the Sabres we'll need it.

For a first game this was okay. Could have been much worse and showed a ton of promise. The thought of this team + Helm, Nyquist and Tatar... will be something when we finally see it.

Howard is on. He's looked sharp all preseason and those were some great saves on the PK.

Like what I'm seeing so far, keep it up. Except the penalties. Don't keep that up.

Although he was playing with Sammy (the anchor) Jarnkrok looks very far away from the NHL. I hate to say it because I had such high expectations, but he has a long way to go. He hasn't even shown any flashes of anything really. He isn't being boneheaded or anything but just not looking like a future top 6 centre.

Disagreed. The key will be putting on some muscle. He's playing well defensively, reading plays, keeping it simple, but he should be playing with more talented offensive players. Give him atleast this year in Grand Rapids before giving up on him.

I know these games don't matter, but I would really like to see a little bit of coaching here. Järnkrok being put together with Tatar and Nyquist for example.

I mostly think it's great because it means way less 0300-0400AM games for us in euroland.

And getting to see less of the Blues/Preds/BJs/Wild and more of Sens/Leafs/Canadiens/etc will be fun.

Tatar is worthy of a serious look with D and Z.

That would be a fun line (2 goats and a kid?) but we all know Babs want Cleary or Abby there.

#2436354 Cleary re-signs with Detroit, 1 year, $1.75m deal

Posted by dat's sick on 12 September 2013 - 07:21 PM

My problem is that we don't seem to identify the up-and-coming stars to sign as free agents BEFORE they become stars. We seem to now get players after they have peaked and get the end of the career. I'm cool with Alfredsson since it is a one year deal and watching him last year, he still was a good player. But we need to target those 25-27 year olds and let them become stars HERE.

When have the Wings been that team though? They've always relied on internal talent developing into stars, and most trades and FA signings have been relatively proven role players or veterans. It's a good system for always having competitive teams without overpaying for potential. This offseason is a great example, assuming that both Nyquist and Tatar find their way onto the team we've added youth from our own system and proven veterans for a sensible cost through free agency.

Cleary isn't a bad guy but I'll only hate this signing if, when all is said and done, it costs us Gus or Tatar.

They're great, down-to-earth people and extremely hard workers. What a disgusting thread.

Obviously they're going to negotiate together, there's not enough seperating them to warrant a discrepancy in term/money and they have the best chemistry in (the history of?) the NHL. Would they be good seperate? Yes. But together they make one of the best lines in the league regardless of who is the 3rd man.
