Maybes and opinions of experts only go so far. The jump from non-NHL talent to NHL talent is a big one, and then becoming a dominating, All Star team leader type player is another huge jump. Lots of players are supposed to be good or great and then don't pan out. I wouldn't bet too much on "the future".

MY problem with the whole thing is that he knew Lids was going to retire a while ago. Maybe not when, but he knew he had to prepare for that day. Maybe make a trade for a younger guy that could grow into his role and get 2 years under his belt before Lids hung it up. Is Smith that guy? No freaking idea. But to put all the eggs in the Suter basket is just desperation. And now he is holding the bag and looking for some plan C. I don't like that.

Bobby Ryan would be my target. I know what they are asking for him and I would give it up, no problem. Guy could be solid here for the next 10 years. No brainer.

This move does not make us younger, hungrier, faster or harder to play against. And he didn't exacly light the world on fire after leaving here. Heck, he pretty much sucked. So why bring him back AND give him a NTC? I could see if it was a sign and trade for someone we REALLY WANT....but this really makes no sense. Get someone up and coming, not someone who's peaked already.

But why this time is it one that their fans hate too? I always hated Chelios but I RESPECTED him as a great player. I don't have that feeling about Tootoo at all. A glorified scrub. Why would the Wings sign him????????? I really truly hate this signing.

Detroit is not the only team gunning for Parise or Suter or Ryan or any of these other players. Every team thinks they can land them. I have a feeling we will be picking up crumbs after some dark horse comes and overpays for one of the guys we've targeted. I don't want that but I am not feeling the heat.

Bobby Ryan was a second overall pick. 4 straight 30 goal seasons. He is 25 years old. Do any of these prospects have that kind of a start in them? Or are we guessing? I don't like guessing. He is signed, we know his cap number, it's all right there. You know what you're getting, you know where to slot him, he can start Game One and finish Game 82 for the next 10 years if you want. That's what we need...in MY opinion. NHL stud talent, not maybes. Do it before the Leafs or Rangers or Flyers or some other team gets it done.

Every article I read mentioned Kronwall, Datsyuk or Zetterberg. Some even mentioned Mule. It would make sense since the first 3 actually were assistants and therefore team leaders.

Maybe if it was Winnipeg or Minnesota where they have the revolving captain every month, yeah I could see that. But not captain of the Detroit Red Wings.

It's OK if you want to believe that, go ahead. But it's not going to happen. You're obviously a super fan for some reason, and hey, here's to ya. We all have our favorite players and he is yours. We're both Red Wing fans and that's cool. But I am hoping he won't be in the lineup next year. I think this team needs a shakeup in personnel and philosophy of play. That's my perogative and what I think is better for the team, given the right deal.
