Perry is a punk and do I think if given an opportunity he would kick a goalie in the head he would do it no question. What really pisses me off the most is how nobody even got in his grill after it happened or took a poke at Hiller. This is playoff hockey and the Wings played like pansies last night. Didn't finish their checks and let Perry set up shop in front of Howard. Game 2 had better be much better.

 

I'm not a parent either, but I just...does that actually happen?!  I can't imagine thinking that...

not with parents that should be parents it doesn't. Maybe talk to a parent that has lost a child before making dumb ass comments like this. Gain a little perspective about life.

The Wings are in tough there's do doubt. I hope they get in but odds are not in their favor. both CBJ and the Stars are playing much better right now. The Wings need to get on a roll and win the rest of their games.

Smith has all the tools to be a great player he just is a little over excited at times. He rushes plays that are not there and he gets caught pinching in when he shouldn't. He needed a older steady partner (like Cheli) that could groom him this year. His game will come together but it will just take more time. 

why cant Ericsson, Cleary, or Emmerton get hurt for the season D:

Sometimes it makes me wonder if kids sneak out of their rooms at night and get on their Mom and Dads computer when I read s*** like this. 

I have a feeling that both Holland and Babcock are going to blame injuries and Lidstrom retiring if the Red Wings miss the playoffs. I feel this will be a complete cop out if it happens. No other teams have Lidstrom either and there are a lot of teams that have had more quality players out then the Wings and they are still in the playoffs ( Ottawa). The forwards need a major overhaul this coming off season. You can't win games without scoring and without heart. Z and Pav cannot carry this team. Holland needs to step to the plate this summer or be shown the door. My list of forwards that can go- Cleary, Fil, Sammy, Eaves, Miller. Not because they are bad just because we need better.

I still think that Ken Holland will over pay for him this off season. Fil is a great player but a pass first type of guy is not what Detroit needs to spend 4.5m+ on. As much as I would hate to see him leave he just doesn't fit for the money he is after and probably will command. 

Holland has done great things for the Red Wings there is no doubting that. But he has also failed to land a sniper for the last three seasons. Hossa should have been signed. The Red Wings have a fairly deep prospect pool and I am sure a couple of those guys could have been moved to land a player that can put the puck in the net. Holland at times could be better but I am sure that you could say that about 29 other GM's

We finally have a good goaltender and people complain...if jimmy had the 2008 team infront of him, he'd win the vezina.

If Jimmy had half the 08 team in front of him he would win the Vezina. I am happy for him. Ozzy used to get 18-20 shots a night with the best D in the league in front of him and he is considered a God around here. Jimmy is the only reason we are still in the playoff hunt at all.

Ken Holland doing nothing tells me that he is satisfied with where his team is at or no other GM's were willing to give him their top players. Based on his last three years I am not sure he is the right GM going forward. 

And I tell you that the days of unlimited spending are over, and that there's no way in the salary-cap era for teams to always succeed. Sharper planning and more involved decision-making are involved, and the mechanics are constantly working against the more successful teams. Guess what? BECAUSE the Wings are successful, KH gets no high picks of any sort to work with. Chicago and Pittsburgh are so successful now in large part because they were horrible enough to get some very high draft picks. Would you like to pay that price? Probably not. But it's necessary the Wings to develop from within if they're going to continue to have any modicum for success while also building for the future.

 

 

 

It is the goal of EVERY TEAM in EVERY SPORT to win the championship every year, so I don't see your point.

 

 

 

This is debatable. If a deadline acquisition plays for your team, does not win the Cup, and leaves in the offseason, then you have lost your prospects and/or picks for nothing. Many teams make deadline deals every season, but ultimately only one team wins the Cup. As for prospects, the team has nine (Sproul, Ouellet, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Frk, Pulkkinen, Jurco, and Mrazek) that at present would be foolish to give away. As others have said---and it is true---this is a team that is rebuilding on the fly. Buying success is no longer possible. The teams that have won the Cup in the past four seasons have done so mainly on the strength of players whom they drafted and developed, and they drafted many of those players from high picks that were achieved from bottom-feeding seasons.

 

I'll list these players (first-rounders noted):

 

Pittsburgh (2009): Crosby (1st overall), Malkin (2nd overall), Staal (2nd overall), Fleury (1st overall), Orpik (18th overall), Letang, Kennedy, Scuderi, Talbot

Chicago (2010): Kane (1st overall), Toews (3rd overall), Seabrook (14th overall), Hjalmarsson, Keith, Brouwer, Byfuglien, Bolland

Boston (2011): Seguin (2nd overall), Bergeron, Krejci, Lucic, Marchand

Los Angeles (2012): Kopitar (11th overall), Brown (10th overall), Doughty (2nd overall), Voynov, Lewis (17th overall), Bernier (11th overall), Quick, King, Martinez

 

The above players, most particularly (italicized for emphasis) those drafted high in the 1st round, provided the meat for those Stanley Cup-winning teams. The contributions of Toews, Kane, Kopitar, Brown, Crosby, and Malkin require no explanation, and the highest pick used to select one of those was #11. For that matter, the lowest 1st-round-drafted player I listed above went at #18. In contrast, the highest pick that Holland has had (Kindl) since he has been with the Wings was #19. The highest pick that the Wings had before that? 10th overall... in 1991.

 

That's just how things go now. Want the Wings to remain successful? Great, but be aware that it'll come at the cost of never having any of these superstar draft picks unless KH and his team get very fortunate (as they often have). That's something the organization will always need to contend with. But in the salary cap era, it's doubly vital to develop the good prospects that the team does obtain. On that subject, consider if Datsyuk, Zetterberg, or Kronwall had been sent away as a part of a deadline deal when they were still prospects. This team would look very different now, almost certainly for the worse. And at this stage of time, KH can even more not risk sending away the next potential superstar prospect, because there's no longer the buffer of higher spending.

 

Like it or not, that's how it is. KH & company have been able to maintain the team's momentum since the lockout better than any other team in the league, but the system is constantly working against them in this.

My point is that if the Red Wings really want to take a run at winning the Cup then why stand pat and do nothing that improves this team. And No it is not every teams goal to win a Championship every year. Some teams are just happy to make the playoffs and I never want to see the Red Wings become one of these teams.

If this team lost Franzen and Flipulla, we would be at the bottom of the conference. The Wings only have 4 legitimate top 6 forwards (not counting Brunner who is a potential top 6). If we lost two of them, we would be screwed. You can't just stick two wingers with Dats and Z and expect offense. The guys are having a hard enough time scoring already.

 

A first round pick does not equal a top 6 forward, or a top 4 defenseman. A first round pick in fact the majority of the time equals not playing in the NHL at all. The Wings have a good core, we literally need a top 6 forward and a top 2 D-man, or two top 6 forwards to be a legitimate contender for the Cup. We got two solid goalies, a group of solid rookies, and an extremely solid top 4 forwards. Datsyuk will be gone soon. Zetterberg and Franzen are becoming less effective. We have 1-2 seasons left at a chance for a cup. As soon as Datsyuk leaves, this team will tank. Might as well try and win a Cup while we stil can.

 

The Wings are drowning, DROWNING, in prospects. How many legitimate goalie prospects do we have? Half a dozen. If Holland is going to do anything, he might as well ditch the dead-weight on the team and get picks. The team has so many players who are not needed, he should just refresh them by trading them for picks.

 

The real question is, if you trade Flipulla for a 1st round pick, what is the probability of getting a player (who in the future) will be better or equal to Flipulla. If I had to make a guess, I would say less than 10%, and that's being generous.

That is the problem right there. Those two clowns have 13 goals between them 13! While playing top line minutes with two of the best play makers in the league. Brunner has 11 and gets demoted to the third line and he plays his ass off every night. The Wings have a ton of guys at forward but only 2 or three that are top 6

The salary cap.

We have been under the cap now for a while. It is not all salary cap when other teams improve every year.

Ken Holland won't do anything. He will come out after the deadline and say he was active and the prices were too high. He will say that the return of Bert and Helm will make him like this team. The Red Wings will either slide into a 7-8th spot and get killed in the first round or they will miss the playoffs altogether. The Cup will go to a team that improves year after year. Next years team will look exactly how it looks today but Fil will be handed a big sack of money that he does not deserve. 

Jeez that was depressing to write and I really hope i am wrong. What ever happened to the win at all costs days??? 

If anyone thinks that Fil can carry this team in either Hanks absence or Datsyuk's retirement then the Wings are in really deep trouble. He is hardly worth his salary now and he wants a raise????? He can easily be replaced and for a hell of a lot less.

I completely understand where everyone is coming from, but Holland was quoted as saying that he'd "see how the next 6 games" went - right? Now that they're currently standing at 7th in the West, could anyone see the flip side of the coin where management decides that this fringe team isn't worth making deadline acquisitions?

I could totally see that happening but if Holland thinks that he needs to sell Fil for the highest bidder and shop Mule.
