To be fair, you're absolutely right about Dalton, he's the closest actor to the novelisations we've had so far.
But he was pretty much hung out to dry with The Living Daylights. The script was written with Roger Moores' Bond in mind, and Brocolli wouldn't sanction any rewrites; hence Dalton looks pretty unconvincing delivering a couple of the lines (particularly out of sorts with that 'chello chase')
Licence To Kill was far more 'edgy', and may prove to have been before its time; but it's largely a 'revenge-flick', and didn't really fit the Bond genre of the time.
No reflection on Daltons ability; just too many circumstances going against him...
I'm pretty gutted at Daniel Craig being the new Bond. The guy's a fantastically talented actor... but that's not the most important thing when it comes to playing Bond. I just don't think he's got the gravitas or theatrics the role requires (remember Dalton...??)
I've got to place Brosnan equal first with Connery. He caught the role perfectly.
Best film... Again a two-way tie.
You Only Live Twice (Bad-guy lair in a volcano.... check!) Tomorrow Never Dies (Over-the-top car chase in a multi-story parking lot..check!)
