Would getting a left-shooting defenceman really help us? He could certainly help on the PP but we are always talking about the Right-shot defenceman to give us more options. And it's not like our PP has been bad... I don't see a reason for Phaneuf at all. Plus, on an offence-minded team he has just 23 points (= to Dekeyser's point production).
Probably not. Time works in our favor as we have a young core that will only get better. Add to that a free agency where Mike Green is available and I don't thin it make much sense to pay a price that high.
Absolutely not. To me Yandle is a great offensive Dman but not great defensivley,

Sure is funny how EVERY article I read about Phaneuf to Detroit, the return package is always Weiss and Kindl. Would that be something TO would accept? Would Weiss wave his NTC to go to TO? He would get better minutes there, plus it is every Canadian boy's dream to play for TO and MTL right? I'd trade away Smith with them, to make sure we get him. Plus that would make Smith super happy (not that he isn't happy here) playing for his child hood favorite team. Also, we wouldn't have to re-sign Smith in the off season, to what would (as always) amount to too much for our "home grown" talent. See: Ericsson and Quincey.
Its only 4 more years of $7M cap hit. If you lose Weiss's $4.9M and Kindl's $2.4M, it's actually saving us money. Weiss has three more years anyhow. Odd's are we may lose Franzen's $3.9M to LTIR retirement (Pronger) and with the cap going up a bit, I think it wouldn't hurt us too much. I they landed Phaneuf, there would be no need to look for a UFA in July.
I think TO would gladly take Weiss/Kindl/Smith for a Phanuef. And that would give us:
Phanuef - Kronwall
Dekeyeser - Ericsson
Quincey - KID from GRR
My only concern is (as always) in 2016 when Jensen, Sproul, Ouellet and Marchenko are all out of exemptions. One of them (if they play all season next year) will be out of exemptions sooner, but that still only leaves 1 spot (Q's) for 3 guys.
I am going to attempt this without capgeek (damn you NHL!) but lets see if I can do it.
Cap = $73M (rumors) We already have $55.338 tied up in salary's for 2015-2016. IF we lost Franzen's $3.955, Weiss' $4.90, Kindl's $2.40 and picked up Phanuef's $7.0M that should leave $13.407M in cap space to re-sign all the RFA's and use on call ups.
So $13.407. Mrazek is $.425, Marchenko is $.306 that still leaves $12.676 to re-sign Pulk, Jurco, Nyquist & Andersson. Even if Smith was retained and re-signed I don't think it would take ALL $12.6M to do it.
Now, in 2016-2017 it may become an issue when Marchenko, Dekeyser, Sheahan and Mrazek will need to be re-signed... Danny D will probably get Ericsson-type money, Sheahan will probably get Helm-type money, Marchenko will probably get something between what Smith and Dekeyser have now, and Mrazek will probably get a bridge deal that pays him around $2-3M (all guesses.) Also Ouellet and Sproul will need to re-signed 2016. Jensen this summer...
I still think Holland can do it, and we instantly become more of a favorite with Phanuef.
Not a chance Smith is included in the deal. Kindl, Weiss, 2nd for Phaneuf
