#2682927 Should any of #91, #13, #40, #30 be retired? Poll/Discussion

Posted by TheDetroitRedWings on 11 July 2016 - 06:22 PM

He himself admitted to knowing about the 35+ rule in his exit interview. I think you are like me in that you were more hurt over the Fedorov situation. I was pissed at Fedorov for almost a decade. (I only got over it last year). The Datsyuk situation bothered me too, but not nearly as much as Fedorov. Probably because I loved Fedorov and had a man crush on him. Just my side of it though.

Exactly how I felt/feel. As for the man crush, Stevie Yzerman was my main man crush. Though Feds was def up there too lol

Datsyuk left in the middle of his contract. If you're using Sergei leaving to Anaheim as a free agent to go to Anaheim as a reason to not have his jersey retired, you should not be saying datsyuk will have his retired. He bolted to Russia without playing out his contract.

He didn't leave in the "middle" of the deal. It had one year left on a 3 year deal. And he was only leaving to be back with his family (in a different Country and league), at basically the tail end of his playing career.

Fedorov's departure isn't even comparable. He left us for another NHL team, left for less money than we offered him. And worst of all left for the Ducks who were one of our biggest rivals at the time (they had just swept us out of the playoffs the season before). And then had to play against us as the enemy 4 times a year. And on top of all that was still basically in his prime at the time. Much worse than Datsyuk's scenario. And that's likely why we'll never see #91 in the rafters.

Unfortunately the one option I would've voted for isn't on the poll. IMO Datsyuk is the only one out of the 4 that will have his jersey hanging in the rafters. Personally I'd like to see Sergei's 91 up there too, but the way he left for the Ducks makes me doubt that will ever happen. Hank is good, and was definitely a huge part of our '08 Cup. But for an organization like the Wings, you need at least 2 or more Cups to even be considered. So the jury is still out on Hank (maybe he'll lead us to another Cup before he hangs em up). As for Osgood. Always loved the guy. But he was never even close to elite. He was solid, which turned into decent, which turned into dreadful.

Always nice to add a grinding physical player. Especially come playoff time, and for a team like ours that lacks grit (a dimension we had for every single year we won the cup) And for just an 800k one year deal there's almost no risk here.

#2681642 Thomas Vanek signs 1 year, $2.6m deal with Detroit

Posted by TheDetroitRedWings on 01 July 2016 - 03:23 PM

Cannot stand some of the negative nancy downers here. I can see complaining about Kenny when he screws up (like most of you I'd also much rather have Stevie Y as a GM) but some ppl here will find anything to complain about, even when it's a solid deal. Kenny not getting Stammer isn't his fault whatsoever. He was never even on the open market. Some ppl need to GTFO with all the negative sky is falling no matter what mentality...smh.

Honestly, really good signing. He might not be the same player he was in Buffalo. But he has a right handed shot. And a change of scenery could be just what he needs. And my guess is he'll fit in better with out style of offense than Minnesota's. Plus its a dirt cheap, one year deal. Atta boy Kenny.

#2681323 Frans Nielson signs 6 year $5.25m AAV contract with Detroit

Can one of the mods at least fix the misspelling of "Nielson"? lol

Ok the term is too long. No doubt about it. But that cap hit is actually pretty reasonable. Just a few days ago I read he wanted in the neighborhood of 6.5 mill. The guy brings a lot to the table. Good faceoff guy, can set guys up and score, and most importantly is also a good defensive forward.

#2676921 Alexander Radulov: Wings on short-list of desired teams

Posted by TheDetroitRedWings on 03 June 2016 - 02:41 PM

Avery was drafted and not brought in. He wasn't drafted for his goal scoring potential/skills.
Too too was signed for his physicality and not his goal scoring skills either.
Bert is another story, was one of the best Power Forward in NHL but after Moore incident he wasn't himself. He was acquired for his size and physical play.

That's exactly my point. We were willing to bring guys in with character issues to help fill our needs as a team. Our biggest need right now by far is more goal scoring. So it should be a no brainer to give a player who consistently produces a chance to see if he can help the team. Especially when we've given "questionable character" players a chance in the past.

Lol Avery was not drafted. We straight up signed him as a free agent. And since your biggest issue is that Radulov will be a locker room cancer, I find it amusing that for some reason you're making excuses for Avery who might be the worst locker room cancer of the past decade from the beginning to the very end of his career, but for some reason you're talking about Radulov having off ice issues in Quebec when he was what? 18 years old?

And why does it matter what they were brought in for? Isn't your whole issue about him being an problem in the locker room for Dylan Larkin.

Forgot to correct him on that. We absolutely brought him in as a FA. lol

SBNation says he's likely going to the Avs.

Apparently, he's not too interested in playing in the NHL playoffs...

#2670752 I hate Tyler Johnson

Agreed 100%, something about his face makes me want to punch it, or see it punched. Reminds me of a Brad Marchand or Alex Burrows type, one of those spot-picking, non-stop chirping, pain in the @$$ guys that seems to particularly enjoy rubbing it in the faces of the opposing team and their fans. Too bad he wasn't the one Abby got a hold of to pound on at the end of game 2. Now that Blash is matching him up against that line, perhaps we will still get to see it. I'd go so far as to say all would be forgiven if Ericsson were to administer the beatdown.

Didn't mention any of this in my post. But you literally took the words out of my mouth. Exactly spot on to how I feel.

We looked pretty good in the 1st. But I just can't get over how this team always tries making the extra pass instead of just shooting the puck. Did it all season. And apparently are going to continue to do it in the playoffs. When you have a 5 on 3 for almost a minute in their zone, and you get 2 shots on goal, there is a serious problem. We gotta just start shooting the puck and hoping for the best. Any hesitation and extra passing is just gonna make it easier on a goalie as good as Bishop.

#2666839 Free Press: Pavel Datsyuk to return to Russia following Playoffs

Posted by TheDetroitRedWings on 10 April 2016 - 01:58 PM

From what I've read, the contract cap hit shouldn't be a problem. After Datsyuk officially leaves, Holland will likely trade the contract to the Coyotes, which will actuallly save Pheonix about 600k. In turn, the Wings would receive Pronger's contract. Then we would use Pronger's LTIR status. Which wouldn't count any $ against the cap.

So really, the only downfall to all of this, is losing an amazing player sooner than we thought we would. But realistically, even if he had no desire to return home, we wouldn't have had him for too much longer anyways age-wise.

Hopefully we can make a nice run and maybe, just maybe, if Jimmy can play the way he did against Philly, maybe he can hoist the Cup one last time (not likely, but there's always a chance). And we all know #13 will be hanging in the rafters soon. Also, just like all our other Red Wings legends, he'll always be a Red Wing. And we'll continue to see him for years to come at various Detroit related events, signings, and future alumni games.

Here's to a hall of fame career Pavel! It's been a pleasure to watch you take the torch that was passed by the likes of Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Fedorov (and other Wings legends). Thankfully we have so many up and coming young stars that Pavel (and Hank, whenever he hangs em up) will in turn pass the torch to.

We are so lucky to be fans of the best organization in sports. That always (and I do mean always) puts competitive teams out there year after year, decade after decade. Cheers!

Once upon a time I would've loved to see him in a Wings jersey. Not so much anymore. Maybe he'll step his game up with the Kings. I doubt it.
