I agree that Smith hasn't been very good. But I'm guessing a lot of teams would love for the Wings to dump him for nothing.
Smith is playing over 19 minutes a night, third among Dmen behind Kronwall and Ericsson. And now doing it against the best team in the league. He's getting exposed for the rookie he is.
Imagine if the Wings had played Kindl or Ericsson like that. They had the benefit of a better blueline so they could play lower pressure bottom pairing minutes. Smith is getting thrown in the deep end.
It's painful to watch, but this is the team we have right now. It's trial by fire.

#2395221 Round 1 Photoshop War: Anaheim Ducks

NyQuist one is well done!
Kind of low numbers for photoshop wars this year - the cool thing about it is that even though it's a lot of the same teams year after year, the cultural references change. (Example: No "Duck Dynasty" references in 2007).

#2391014 Jim Nill to be named Dallas Stars GM
Posted by ogreslayer
on 27 April 2013 - 08:05 PM
As soon as my editor posts my new blog entry, you should check it out. It is a pretty heated slamming of Ken Holland for going against his word and stringing Nill along. This is the WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO DETROIT in the past 20 years. The only thing that would be worse is losing Hakin. Holland is spent and he said he was going to retire post Lidstrom. Now he can't because the guy who deserved the job a year ago is leaving to Dallas and I am angry and embarrassed. I have no faith in this organization if they string along Jim and then lose him in favor of Holland who seems too timid and tired. I really hope this is wrong, and if it is right I hope Holland gets fired before Nill signs in Dallas. I felt secured in the future of the team until tonight.
Switch to decaf & take off the tin foil hat.
From Craig Custance:
"Red Wings GM Ken Holland likes to joke that Lidstrom's retirement press conference will be followed shortly by his own"
From Bob McKenzie:
“DET GM Kenny Holland always used to joke, at least I think he was joking, that he would retire five minutes after Nick Lidstrom retired.”
From Kevin Allen @ US Today:
"GM Ken Holland used to joke that he was going to retire when Lidstrom retired"
And strung along? The same man who was at the top of pretty much every team's wish list that had an opening the past couple of years, was given opportunities to interview for them, & turned them all down due to the fact he wanted to stay in Michigan as his wife was battling cancer? The same man that was paid as much as GM's throughout the league & was on record saying that he loved the autonomy that Kenny gave him to do his job? That's being strung along? In the immortal words of Sgt. Hulka, "Lighten up, Francis".
Good for Nill. He's ready to move on to the next step of his career & run his own team and good for the Wings to recognize it's time too, just like they did with Stevie.

If anyone took what Ken Holland said seriously about retiring when Lidstrom did, you have some serious issues. Best of luck to Jim Nill.

Sheeesh chill out
I'm really not seeing why people are happy about Smith's destructive loss of discipline at an absolutely vital juncture.

#2387383 Which things from the past (not just Wings related) do you miss most?

Those darn goalie masks. Gave a bad image to every self-respecting horror movie madman. One guy puts one on, and the next thing you know, mass murderers have a bad reputation, not to mention the decrease in popularity of the name Jason. Go bare like pre-Plante, dang it.
Seriously- I like helmets/masks because of the protection they provide, but I miss seeing the guys' hair flowing behind them like they were rock stars (Ron Duguay, anyone?) and I miss the way that they recognized that they were vulnerable. They knew the difference between hurt and injure and played to hurt.
The game being faster has made it more dangerous, but maybe we've lost something with all this speed.

#2380321 Holland retirement watch?
Posted by Marty Barry
on 04 April 2013 - 04:59 PM
Sorry, not ready to erase "In Kenny We Trust" from Red Wings currency. Besides, it's the entire braintrust of Holland, Nill, Devellano, and ultimately Illitch that have us where we are. And where we are is a place that half the league would kill to be. Of course that is just my opinion and my opinion comes after suffering through the "Dead Wings" era and never even entertaining the thought of jumping ship as a fan. In Kenny I Trust!

Why would Holland retire? Because some posters on a Red Wings message board want him to?
He isn't going anywhere. If you can't handle seeing Kenny Holland being the GM of the Red Wings then maybe it's time to start cheering for another team. If it bothers you that much. ![]()

I love it - one thread bemoaning Hollands passivity. Another thread praising it.
Man, this board is getting as bi-polar as our team. I haven't seen it split like this since the Great Enforcer Wars of 4-5 years ago.

What a stupid decision. I would prefer to dump Huskins and have him wear #3. 65 is just so meh. Also 6 is available too.
Blasphemy.
