    IIHF vs. NHL.

It's the man's job, but he looks sour constantly. I wonder what it's like being his friend?

    2012 Baseball thread

As a Reds fan, I'm not sure what was more painful: wathcing the Reds fall from a 2-0 series lead or that last damned Cardinals rally. What a huge letdown these playoffs have been.

Any NHL'ers from your home town?

Not as bad as Wyoming but no. South-East Ohio isn't exactly a hockey hotbed, although the Ohio University club team is fun to watch.

Who is your favorite player from a team besides the Wings?

A goalie on a hot streak I've gotta go with Kopitar, guy just seems to think the play through.
  5. I didn't want Parise nearly so much as Suter, but f*** if this doesn't hurt. I don't want Coliaciavo (or whatever his name is) but or blue line looks like s***. I'd rather have the CBJ blue line at this point. We needed Suter. With the options out there now, Holland has to find a trade partner. Yandle? I've trade Iron Hook and Tatar plus picks for Webber, through in Franzen. This blue line is atrocious and none of the FAs will help.

St. James: Wings have inquired about Rick Nash

The biggest reason I have seen for Nash's declining production is selfishness which, playing with Columbus, was warranted. Columbus knew Nash was the best chance of scoring just as much as the other team did which forces the guy into 2 on 1's and 3 on 1's where he'll inevitably fail. Still, better than letting Brassard take a wrister that goes wide.
  7. The Wings have Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppula, Franzen, Brunner, Nyquist, Samuelsson, Cleary, Bertuzzi, Helm, Abdelkader, Tootoo, Eaves, and Miller signed and reports say they're going hard after Parise and are making an offer for Nash. That would make 15 forwards, 7-9 of which can slot into the top 6. That means they have 2 extra forwards beyond the 13 that could be dealt for parts. The Wings defense, on the other hand, could use a top-4 presence. Assuming Suter or Carle signs, another top-4 defenseman would make sense. Keith Yandle was reportedly in play. If you can unload Franzen or Filppula for an upgrade on the back end while signing Parise, it makes perfect sense. I really doubt a GM can be thinking that far ahead though, save for some unique circumstances. The landscape can change drastically in just moments.

Valtteri Filppula - we should get him locked up as soon as possible

Before this past year, it felt like Filppula missed about an open net per game. The guy knows how to get into position, he's good enough on his skates to force seperation, and I absolutely love the way that he sees the ice. Sometimes he misreads the play half-way through it, but I think that's what was changing over this past year. See what happens in free agency. If we don't land Suter, you trade him for a defensman. If you do get Suter, there's no reason to deplete your forward depth.

    Filp at center?

I think Filppula's game is much better suited for a 2nd line role where he can find some space and set up plays. I may try something like... Filppula-Datsyuk-Semin/Parise Brunner-Zetterberg-Franzen Nyquist-Helm-Mursak Bertuzzi-Abdelkader-Cleary ...just to see if you could spark some of the secondary scoring like we had in the 2008 cup run. But Filppula would be wasted as #3C, imo.

    Hudler to test free agency

There is a difference between not going to the dirty areas of the ice and being completely useless when you get there. Hudler always struck me as being in the second group. His offensive game was suited for a second line player but he couldn't do enough in the other areas of the game to warrant a perminent position there.

St. James: Wings have inquired about Rick Nash

I doubt Nash would want to come here, anyway. I don't doubt that he'd fit in, but he seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't flip to "the hated Red Wings" just because he didn't like being in Columbus.

who's on the outs if we sign multiple forwards?

I'd like to keep Mursak as the 13th forward for at least the beginning of the season. I don't really expect him to become a consistent part of the lineup but I think he has a better shot at it than Emmerton and arguably post-concussion Eaves. I also have faith that a surgically repaired Clearly will regain some of his lost form even if he doesn't completely return to his old ways. Assuming we have to remove 2 players, I'd vote for Emmerton and Miller/Abdelkader. Send Emmerton through waivers and try to trade one of the other two for late picks or in a package with someone like Tatar for an A-level defensive prospect.

The Grass Is Always Greener - Johan Franzen

I think the production is there, I wouldn't expect a whole lot more from him in terms of goals or points. There are shifts, however, when he just finds a spot in the neutral zone towards the attacking blue line and doesn't really do anything. I'd rather him backcheck hard consistently and lose 5 goals a year than float. The other problem with the streakiness is that it goes away during the playoffs (usually). That tells me that he has an extra gear, he just only uses it when he wants to.

The Grass Is Always Greener - Johan Franzen

tl;dr below the stat-headedness. The two biggest knocks on Johan Franzen are his streakiness and perceived laziness. Franzen also currently has the fourth highest salary on the team. While the Red Wings are well below the cap floor - spending money isn't a problem - what, exactly is Franzen's value to the team and what should be done with him? Franzen lead the team with 29 goals, beating fellow whipping-boy Jiri Hudler by 4. His 56 points were good enough for fourth on the team. Franzen essentially paced himself to score a goal once every third game and had .683 ppg. Using this, it is possible to gauge how streaky Johan really is. I am going to break Franzen's season into 2 week segments, examining goals, points, and pace for both, Oct 7-Oct 21 GP G A P GPG PPG 5 4 3 7 65.6 114.8 Oct 22-Nov 6 GP G A P GPG PPG 7 1 2 3 34.1 68.3 All of Franzen's points this week came from one game on November 5th, the last of the week. Nov 7-Nov 21 GP G A P GPG PPG 7 5 5 10 43.1 86.2 Nov 22-Dec 6 GP G A P GPG PPG 7 3 3 6 40.9 81.9 Dec 7-Dec 21 GP G A P GPG PPG 7 1 3 4 34.7 74.4 Dec 22-Jan 5 GP G A P GPG PPG 6 2 1 3 33.6 69.4 Jan 6-Jan 20 GP G A P GPG PPG 8 2 5 7 31.3 69.6 Jan 21-Feb 4 GP G A P GPG PPG 6 1 1 2 29.3 65.0 Feb 5-Feb 19 GP G A P GPG PPG 7 4 1 5 32.4 66.3 Feb 20-Mar 5 GP G A P GPG PPG 6 1 2 3 29.9 62.1 Mar 6-Mar 20 GP G A P GPG PPG 5 2 1 3 29.9 61.2 This is the beginning of the 5 games that Mule missed. Mar 21-Apr 3 GP G A P GPG PPG 3 0 0 0 28.8 58.7 Apr 4-Apr 7 GP G A P GPG PPG 3 3 0 3 30.8 59.6 So is Franzen statistically streaky? Oh yes. If you expect one goal every third game, you would expect to see about 2 goals every two weeks, give or take. Franzen missed that mark (counting 1-3 goals per week) more than 1/3 of the time. If you count scoring one goal in two weeks as poor, as I would, that count rises to more than 1/2 the time. Also telling is the changing rate at which Franzen scored. There was no way Mule would continue the pace he set over the first five games, but discounting that, Franzen's PPG pace varied by around 2.7 per two weeks. That indicates a good deal of instability. tl;dr: Mule is wildly inconsistent. He's only costing about $4M in cap space, but I don't know if I'm comfortable with Franzen being part of the solution moving forward. Thoughts on Johan?

    Bottom 6 free agents

I'd love to find someone with wheels to play with Helm. If/when the team hits a rough patch, an energy line of Mursak-Helm-FA speedster would be, at the very least fun, to watch.
