#2321967 Who is your favorite player from a team besides the Wings?

Posted by kipwinger on 25 July 2012 - 07:23 PM

Martin St. Louis. Class act, magic with the puck, and a heart two times the size of his 175 lbs.

Honorable mention: Colton Orr. A little bit soft, but a goal scoring machine who skates like the wind blows.

#2318182 Smith Leads Charge

Posted by dat's sick on 11 July 2012 - 11:17 AM

Really, you think he'll get 43 points!? I doubt it.. 42 maybe, or 44.. but 43 seems an unrealistic expectation.

PS. I think he'll have a huge season and be a Calder finalist.

If we keep acting like this, no free agents are going to want to sign here.

#2311134 The Grass Is Always Greener - Johan Franzen

Posted by GoalieManPat on 29 June 2012 - 02:54 PM

How many of you give 100% effort at your job 100% of the time?

Most people do. Otherwise they get fired. Most people don't have the luxury of visibly slacking off 5 of 7 days of the week yet still make 4 mill a year. Pro athletes need to be held to a higher standard as they get paid way more than they are worth in the grand scheme of things. I can think of many many professions that deserve that 4 million a year and to see someone just do the bare minimum most nights is infuriating. In my opinion no sports contacts should be guaranteed. It should all be part of a performance matrix.

Hudler's biggest drawback is that you have to time him with a sundial rather than a stopwatch.

What if we offer Columbus all of our 2013 draft picks?! Oh.. wait, nevermind.

#2311086 The Grass Is Always Greener - Johan Franzen

Posted by haroldsnepsts on 29 June 2012 - 12:14 PM

Need a break down to how bad Zetterberg was to start the season. He was god-awful bad. Also Lidstrom was pretty bad at the end of the season/playoffs.

If Franzen was consistent like very few NHL players are (like Crosby), would Franzen's cap hit be under $4 million? I don't think so.

In essence, Franzen is a bargain right now and will be extremely difficult to replace his offense for under $4 million per year. I would only consider trading Franzen if it's for a younger, tougher, more proven offensive power forward (NOT CHRIS STEWART OR PENNER TYPE GUY)

The difference is that when Datsyuk and Zetterberg are on cold streaks, you can see them working hard, backchecking, going to the hard areas. Something about their game just seems a little off or the puck's just not going in but you can see the work.

With Franzen it feels like he works hard for the first part of his shift and if he doesn't score right then he can't wait to coast back to the bench. He's got great size, a great shot and great hands. It's all about his compete level. or lack of it.

When he scores in a game, it's like it reminds him how great it is to score. It lights a fire under him for the rest of the game and he keeps getting great chances and often scores again. If he's not scored in a while though he seems content to just whip it at the net and see if it goes in.

tl;dr below the stat-headedness.

The two biggest knocks on Johan Franzen are his streakiness and perceived laziness. Franzen also currently has the fourth highest salary on the team. While the Red Wings are well below the cap floor - spending money isn't a problem - what, exactly is Franzen's value to the team and what should be done with him?

There is nothing perceived about Franzens laziness.

Streakiness is something that all players suffer from to a greater or lesser degree. Even Pavel was ice-cold in the first and last months of the season (for different reasons), and red-hot inbetween. The key is to make the streaks last as long as possible, and minimise the funks.

My problem with Franzens bad attitude is that he is allowed to get away with it. Signing a lifetime contract and being allowed to coast your way through it sends totally the wrong message to the rest of the team.

#2308268 Forums Upgraded

Posted by Matt on 20 June 2012 - 06:39 PM

As you've undoubtedly noticed, things look a bit different around here! The LGW Forums have underwent the biggest upgrade since 2010 and there are a lot of significant changes -- far more than I think I could meaningfully gather into this post. Many you'll notice as you continue to surf the forums as many of the enhancements are functional. Bullets:

There are currently two "main" template skins, labeled "White" (the default one) and "Red"
You're free to switch among them as you see fit by clicking on the "Change Theme" link at the bottom of the page.

Removal of profile pictures
IP.Board opted to merge the two into one avatar, and as of the last update I believe that remote-linking of images for avatars is no longer permitted (security risk).

Speed
The forums should show some significant speed improvements. Some of this is due to inline updating: Posts can be added to threads seamlessly. I'll continue to try to make as many speed improvements to the forums as I can.

More integration with social media
You'll see the ability to add topics to your Facebook/Twitter accounts.

Rep System replaced with "Like" button
No more +/- functionality as it has been replaced with a "Like this Post" button.

Topic Preview
When viewing the forum index (like 'General Discussion' here), you can mouseover a topic and see a dark gray down arrow icon appear to the right -- click it to expand the topic to view the first few posts before going to the topic page itself.

TapaTalk functionality is BACK
Some members have been clamoring for it to return as a mobile viewing option, so here it is. TapaTalk is now compatible with the forum (in addition to the standard Mobile theme that's also available if you're still looking for an easy mobile browsing solution.)

Custom Topic Tags
Options vary by forums and by member group, but there are now customized topic tags (or 'badges'). In the past it was limited to "PINNED" and "POLL", but I've expanded that to include "GDT" (for Game Day Threads), "SIGNED" for *official* signings, and "TRADE" for topics discussing an official trade. (Do not abuse this ability! It's a great visual aid for visitors of the forums and those that abuse it will be promptly suspended/banned.)

Better Spam Protection
All new registrations are IP checked against a known spam list remotely hosted and updated. This should help eliminate a large number of spammers that manually attempt to register and stops them before even seeing the registration form.

New Profile "Statistics" Tab
Just what it says: No see just how addicted you are to LGW by looking at your recorded posting habits by time of day and by forum activity.

Gallery Link added to Profile
A new "Gallery" tab has been added to your User Profile, for quick access to see what user's have uploaded and shared with the community.

Topic "Tags"
These replace the the topic subtitle (the smaller, gray text that was present on the last version). You can enter up to 10 per topic, separated by commas. Use vital keywords describing the topic, like a player name, team, etc., and it'll help catalog forum topics more efficiently to help search engine spiders and the search feature here work more efficiently.

There are plenty more, and I'll add to this thread as I can -- right now I'll be tending to little bug fixes here and there that tend to pop up following a major upgrade like this. (Also, if any members see something I didn't mention, please feel free to add it here!)

I feel like he and his family probably walked out to the parking lot, got in a spaceship and flew home to whatever hockey god planet he came from.

All the "secondary" players, too- Chelios, Probert, everyone on the Grind Line, Hull, Hasek, CuJo, Lucky Luc, Shanahan, Schneider, Holmstrom, Zetterberg... It's good to be a Wings fan.

Did you just call Z a secondary player?

Ha! I bet Nick would do it, too, waive his NTC just as a favor.

You going to change the banner in your signature after the jersey retirement?

Yep, gonna have to!
