#2683981 DeKeyser re-signed to a 6 year deal

Posted by Bring Back The Bruise Bros on Yesterday, 06:48 PM

Unless he gets significantly better, if he's the cornerstone of the defense, the team is screwed

Exactly what I'm thinking. He'll likely continue to improve, but he's not #1 material.

I don't mind the deal. Maybe a little more than I would have wanted in terms of salary, but I can live with it. However, we still need significant help on defense.

Ok, no ott or miller....still have helm.

Tatar - Nielson - Vanek
Zetterberg - Larkin - Abdelkader
Jurco - AA - Nyquist
Helm - Sheahan - Glendening
Frk since he has no exemptions & Tangradi maybe

I'd much rather have Mantha up and no helm as well. Plus I'm still hoping Nyquist gets dealt in a D trade....but...

Dude, do you not like the Helm deal or something?

#2683854 Glendening signs 4-year, $1.8m AAV extension

Most overrated qualities in an NHL player:

1. Grit

2. Penalty killing

3. Faceoff win percentage

Only makes sense that Glendening does all 3 of these pretty well

1. "Grit" is also one of the worst-defined terms on this site. What is grit? Is it fighting? Blocking shots? Finishing hits? Winning puck battles along the boards? I'd say it's a combination of all those things. With the exception of fighting, I'd say all of those things are imperative to winning games, especially in the playoffs. One of the major reasons Tampa was able to dispose of Detroit in 5 was because their forechecking wore down our defense and forced turnovers. Additionally, they won a ton of 50/50 puck battles along the boards.

2. Again, you can't have a deep playoff run unless you have a reliable core of PK specialists. I agree that some players' effectiveness on the penalty kill is used to justify their position on the team, specifically in the case of Drew Miller. He doesn't provide much else besides his role on the PK. Very little offense, not particularly fast, and ineffective on the forecheck.

3. This is ludicrous. Games are won and lost in the faceoff circle. Puck-possession is the name of the game. This is one of the most bat-s*** crazy things I've read on here in a long time.

The only way I'd be down with Streit would be if we got rid of Ericsson or Howard. He's not worth Jurco or any of the younger players.

#2682341 Steve Ott signs 1 year, $800k deal with Detroit

Posted by Bring Back The Bruise Bros on 05 July 2016 - 10:17 PM

I've had a love/hate relationship with Ott, but I'm looking forward to the physical element that he'll bring to the fourth line. It's too early to tell what his role will be on the team, but I think he's capable of playing regular fourth line minutes. With Miller returning from injury and Pulkkinen out to start the season, it seems like he'll see some playing time. I'm excited about this.

I know one thing, I'm gonna be thoroughly disappointed if we sign Frans Nielsen for 5.5/5yrs. That's his rumored ask, and he keeps popping up in rumors linked to us. McKenzie mentioned Ladd as a name we might be in on, I'd be down with that.

This is what I'm thinking:

- I'd be cool with Andrew Ladd or David Backes (preferably a shorter contract)

- Especially for his asking price, I don't want Nielsen.

- We should be taking a good look at Jamie McGinn. He isn't getting a ton of attention but he can play throughout the lineup and adds physicality up front.

- If we're seriously looking at dealing a defenseman, Ericsson should be the prime candidate to ship out of town. Smith, while he isn't going to wow anyone with his offensive capabilities, had a decent season last year.

- Helm isn't a top 6 player. More power to him to find a spot on someone else's second line.

- We've obviously got to add to our blueline. Guys like Tatar/Nysuist, Jurco and Pulkkinen should be pieces sent in return.

- Rather than overpay for a guy like Matt Martin, bring in Mike Brown. He'll basically do the same thing, skates pretty well, and would be a lot cheaper. If Martin could be had for the right price, absolutely close the deal. Bottom line is the 4th line could use a different element.

- Stay away from Filppula and Hudler, for crying out loud.

I'd love Martin for the right price. Someone else will overpay, so I'm not really getting my hopes up.

Currently trying to put plans together for a trip to the Joe. Would be awesome if I could hit a Lions game as well.

Loooch brings entertainment and can act as a bodyguard for some players. If the term is right I wouldn't be against it although he doesn't fix the huge need for a number 1 center and defenseman so yeah.

He brings a physical element, but the term is not going to be reasonable. He's only going to get slower at this point, and he was noticeably slower than his linemates last year.

3 years at under $4.5 per or it's too much

He'll be looking for at least 5 years at $5 mil + per year.

No way Holland throws the bank at this clown.

Detroit is rumored to be interested in Lucic. As much as I think we need to get heavier and more difficult to play against, throwing a 6-year contract at Lucic would be an idiotic move. I just don't see Holland doing it. I don't see his production rising much, if at all, for the rest of his career. Let Edmonton or Vancouver make that mistake.

Some thoughts:

- I'm confident the contract will be dealt. I don't think Pulkkinen has a future here and it'd be great if he was a part of the package. If Jurco has to go, so be it.

- It's clear that Richards won't be back, which is the right move as far as I'm concerned.

- I could stand to see Quincey walk, though I thought he played well last year.

- I think Miller needs to be let go.

- Helm isn't a top 6 player on this team. It'll be really interesting to see what takes place with him.

- Backes and Lucic are going to be looking for 5+ years, so it's best we stay away. Their game will likely decline after a couple more years.

- I'm not really into speculating about Stamkos, but adding him to the lineup would instantly put us in a better place than last year.

- Matt Martin is a guy that this team needs in the bottom 6. Hits hard, can contribute offensively, and generally plays a disciplined game. One of the reasons Tampa was able to win in 5 was because they established a forecheck that got the defense in trouble and they were able to muck it up in the corners and win puck battles. Martin adds these elements.

- I'm open to the idea of trading Nyquist or Tatar. Not sure what Holland would be looking to get in return.

#2678097 Datsyuk Announcement to Officially Leave NHL

Posted by Bring Back The Bruise Bros on 18 June 2016 - 11:57 AM

We knew it was coming. One of the most well-rounded players I've ever watched and it's sad to see him go. Thanks for all the memories, Pav. He'll always be remembered for his uncanny stick-handling skills, but he was also an exceptional defensive player and always carried himself in a humble way.

Here's to a happy future in Russia and a #13 in the rafters soon.

Probably not going to pay much attention to this series. Both teams have players that I seriously dislike. Never want Thornton to win a Cup, Ribeiro is a scumbag, Neal is a ******, Weber is a cheapass, and Couture annoys me.

#2672815 ECQF Game 5 Post-GDT: at Tampa Bay 1, Red Wings 0 (TB Wins, 4-1)

Right, but he also played the sixth fewest minutes of anyone on the team. I'm not saying you're wrong - it would be great if he had scored more - but directing your criticism at a secondary role player who was the second-leading goal scorer for our team in the regular season and our best player in the playoffs seems counterproductive.

He played the sixth fewest minutes on the team. Our problems are with the people assigned to actually show up and blow people away.

I don't disagree. It's clear that Blashill mismanaged the team's young talent. Datsyuk and Zetterberg can't carry the team anymore, and guys like AA should have been getting more time.

#2670728 ECQF Game 3 Post-GDT: at Red Wings 2, Tampa Bay 0

Posted by Bring Back The Bruise Bros on 18 April 2016 - 10:41 AM

Checking in after a long absence.

Smith played a great game last night. Energized the crowd with the big hit on Paquette in the opening minutes. Made a few real nice defensive plays. We need him to play like this every game from here on out.

Mrazek stood on his head. We've scored 2 goals every game in this series; Mrazek is going to need to continue to play stellar if we're going to take this series.

Good on Abdelkader to leave Boyle and Tampa Bay walking away from game 3 with nothing to rally around. At some point he needs to square up with Blunden after what happened in game 2, but this wasn't the right time to do it. Super pumped that this series has taken on such a physical and nasty tone.

Stoked for game 4. Wish I could make it!
