#2620801 Lovable Dan Cleary update thread

Posted by WingsAlways on 17 July 2015 - 10:01 PM

My sister passed away about 3 weeks ago from cancer.

A couple of seasons ago she had a chance to go to a Wings game.

My dad had been in contact with the Wings people and they were trying to work out who she might want to meet if she got the chance. It was up to me to ask her who she wanted to meet. Of course, we were trying to surprise her so I didn't want to just come out and say "Hey you're probably going to get to meet one of the players, who do you want to meet?"

So i would ask, "Hey Care, if you got to meet anybody on the wings who would you want to meet?"

"DAN CLEARY!" she'd exclaim.

So a couple of days later I would ask again. "DAN CLEARY!!" was the answer I got again.

She knew they were going to be going to the game when she went down to Ann Arbor, so I tried again, "No..Seriously....If you really got to meet one of the current Wings players when you go to the game, who would it be?"  I could not have given her a bigger hint without flat out just telling her!

"DAN CLEARY!"

So she and my dad and uncle went to the game and had a good time. Then the game was over. As they are trying to 'leave' the building, my uncle is leading the way with directions on where to go with my dad and sister following him. She still has no idea.

They end up in an area where she figures they aren't supposed to be. "Are we allowed down this way?"

Finally they end up standing against a wall with a bunch of other people with a Wings/arena employee telling them to just wait where they are.

"Are we meeting players?!" She had finally figured it out.

While they were waiting she felt she had accidentally bumped into someone behind her. She turned to say she was sorry to them. But nothing came out of her mouth. It was Nicklas Lidstrom that she had bumped into!! (This was during his last season when he wasn't playing due to his ankle) He saw she was trying to apologize and told her it was no big deal. Other players like Pavel and Zetterberg had walked through the hallway where they were waiting.

Finally Dan Cleary came out and asked "Are you Carrie?"

I don't remember much of what else happened (I wasn't there, just heard the stories afterward), but he was super nice to her, took a couple of pictures, and signed some things.

The jersey says

"To: Carrie    Best Wishes

 Your friend, Dan Clear 11"

He also had a signed bobble head sent to our house a couple of weeks later.

I always teased her about wanting to meet Cleary over anybody else, but she really enjoyed the whole experience

Man I teared up a bit reading that.

Everyone wonders why the Wings still keep the guy around, right there's your answer. Not saying I agree that the guy should be playing but with a heart like that how can you let him go to another organization?

Sorry to hear about your sister roboturner, great story though. I'm one of the bigger Cleary fans around here I'm sure, being a fellow Newf and all... I've met Cleary several times, as my cousin trains with him when he come home every summer. I also have a personalized autographed Cleary jersey hung up on my wall. And I was actually in the little parade that went through his hometown (Harbour Grace) when he brought home the Cup in the summer of '08. He truly is an amazing individual, and as much as I would love Cleary to be "able" to play next season, he really is done, and he should hang them up. I would love nothing more, for him to be offered some sort of job (strength and conditioning coach) within the organization...

Ok, Danny Cleary is now my favorite player.

Sometimes its easy to forget that while Dan Cleary the player has long since outlived his usefulness as a Detroit Red Wing, that Dan Cleary the man is actually a great person and a wonderful ambassador for not just the Red Wings but professional athletes in general. That story above my post is a good reminder of that.

In no way do I want him taking a roster spot up on the team anymore, but I'll always respect how he turned his career around with the Wings and his contributions to the team over the years.

Who knew there'd be volatility in the oil and gas industry? Was making bank until this recent oil price collapse.

Meh. Back to school to get another business degree and come out making even more.

I love the climate out here far more than Ontario's Great Lakes climate. Not nearly as humid as the US Southeast, but humid enough to bug someone who's a native of much drier climates.

Filed for Canadian citizenship already, waiting for the ceremony to dump US citizenship (the cost went from around $400 to around $2300) and attain German citizenship through mom.

Who the hell is Scott Darling?  and who cares if he got a Stanley Cup tattoo... so have lots of ink-crazed fans.

He's the backup goalie for Chicago who carried them until their started pulled his head out of his jockstrap and started winning again.  He deserves a Cup tat.  He won it.

#2619182 Nyquist Files For Arbitration

Posted by FlashyG on 06 July 2015 - 04:05 AM

The mistake many making here is assuming that this case even gets before an arbitrator.

Neither side wants that, no player wants to hear his employer explain all his shortcomings in an effort to cut his salary. Nyquist has excellent regular season production but he'd be roasted on his awful playoff numbers to this point. Still I think he'd get a better offer by going to arbitration than what I think he's going to sign before it gets there.

I expect him to take a deal in the 3.75 to 4.25 million range, similar to Kadri's but perhaps a little longer.

And the ironic thing is he was drafted with the pick we gave to Washington for Robert Lang. Full circle indeed! Welcome to the best organization in sports Mike!!

Osgood lol

Bit off topic ... Just read both of lidstrom's kids are coming to camp and are 21 and 19 ... Anyone think were gonna sign one or both of them? Guessing since they weren't drafted yet they basically got no nhl futures to help the wings :(

Still a 15 yr old so playing as well so some hope

Link to the 19 yr old and on top you can click on the other brothers

I'm still hoping the Lidstrom boys mate with the Yzerman girls so we have 'superhuman hockey dudes'.

#2614616 2015 SCF : Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Posted by GoWings1905 on 15 June 2015 - 10:00 PM

Besides the Kings two cups, watching the champion since 2009 has been brutal. Crosby on the Wings home ice, the Blackhawks three times and the d-bag Bruins.

Basically what I'm saying is, I like it a lot more when the Red Wings are doing the winning.
