Ericsson gets it bad from Wings' fans.... I believe mostly because he set such lofty expectations after he burst out in the 08/09 playoffs and then fizzled the following season. The fact is, he has become a strong shut down penalty killer. It's hard to believe and I had to see the stats to really believe it myself, but when he got hurt last season, our PK suffered.... he returned and all of a sudden our PK got better. I don't believe he'll ever be valued higher than a 3/4 d-man, but I do believe he'll be a strong shut down defensemen with "some" offensive skill going forward. He just never had much of a chance. I say if we don't get any significant defensive help this offseason, we put Ericsson on the second PP and see what he can do. It can't hurt, and the opportunity is there.
Start at goalie, it is the easiest to answer. McDonald will be gone and a UFA will come in. McDonald has zero trade value, so either will be cut or become a throw in on a deal. There are several veterans goalies that could be had this year. No major changes in the roster, cap, or status of the team. If possible I would try to extend Howard now, rather than risk him next offseason.
Who is this McDonald guy you keep talking about? The Wings have no such person on the roster. Oh, you mean Joey MacDonald? I seriously doubt he'll be cut or thrown in on a deal. He'll be put through waivers & either play in GR or the Wings lose him if another teams wants to claim him. So realistically, he'll be in GR splitting time with McCollum and/or Petr Mrazek throughout the season.
I couldn't care less about the politics, I just think it's funny that there wasn't the level of hatred towards Tim Thomas that there is now until he stepped into the political landscape. Suddenly he's a jerk!
Not sure how I feel about Zetterberg as the captain. Wouldn't be terrible, but I don't like that he's our best choice at this point. He's got 95% of what it takes to be a great captain, but there just seems to be something missing. I'm not even sure what it is, but something about it just doesn't feel right to me.
Im not going by assumption. I'm going by Zach Parise himself saying it when he was talking about Minnesota and where he grew up on a radio interview. He spent about 3 and a half years in Faribault when he played for Shattuck before he went to North Dakota. Look it up.
I did look it up. So when his dad J.P took over as hockey director at Shattuck St. Mary's in 1989, Zach didnt move there or anything? I did look it up. It's funny how i can look up a radio interview you "supposedly" heard. Yeah Zach played at Shattuck and was one of my biggest rivals in high school hockey. Culver Military Academy is where I went (same place as Ryan Suter for 2 years) and I know all about Shattuck and those big names that have attended there. I live close to Faribault now too. Yes. Apparently you dont but keep posting lies on here its cool. You need cred. Cheers
Good post Richdg. I wouldn't worry about all the neggs you get on the comments. Since I've been here, I have noticed many a Wing fan either incapable or unwilling to face the fact that it will soon be time to rebuild and that we aren't a dynasty anymore. Sadly, even when you give them the facts and throw the numbers in their faces, you still wont get them to be realistic about it. Of course we all want to see Detroit be a dominant force in the league and compete for cups year after year. But when you look at the facts and look at the numbers, it's not there and it's easy to see the decline. Thanks for the reality check.
That "pair" will have to come in the draft...two things though, with the Wings always making the playoffs and most the time going fairly deep, they never get a high enough draft pick to score a Yzerman type player and there are barely anymore Fedorov/Datsyuk's to steal away from Russia. I agree, they need to get that next two or three centers to carry this team after a few more years, but honestly, I don't think Holland can do it. And I definitely do not want to see the Wings get a first overall pick (unless it's via an RFA lose or trade.) It could potentially happen next season if Holland lets RFA Quincey sign somewhere else and gets compensated with the 1st/3rd draft picks and if that somewhere else ends up being a lottery team...it could happen...
