Ref with subtle interference on the Wings in the o-zone there. Edzo would be proud.
The crazy thing about Holtby's dive is it put him entirely out of position to stop Miller's shot. If he stays up, that's an easy save. So, the goal was a direct result of his stupid dive and he got rewarded for both.
Let's just agree to disagree on this one... I don't think a defenseman in the middle of the diamond makes sense at all, that is the last place I would put Smith. The player in the middle is who you want directing traffic, and can make the quick one touch passes and can also be a trigger man.
I also disagree that Smith wouldn't be capable of manning the point, even if he were the last man back in the diamond. He has improved his defensive game immensely and is much smarter with the puck. Even if he does make a mistake, he is our fastest defenseman, so the chance of him recovering is much higher than any of the other d, in my opinion.
Either way, I'm done with this. I just want our power-play to improve. It's clearly not getting it done now, whether that's on the system they're using, the coaching strategies or the personnel, who knows...
Right now I think Myers is a bit better than Smith and Dekeyser. I think that's going to change fairly soon though. Given Myers' contract, I don't want him unless they're willing to take a ridiculously craptacular package in return, which they won't.
Did you know that Myers is younger than Smith and the same age as Dekeyser? If they have room to improve, why doesn't Myers?
Just a random thought. I know Adam Almquist went overseas, but if I recall correctly, the Wings still hold his rights. Is that a piece we could throw in to a package to help keep Larkin and Mantha off the table? He was good in the AHL but a bit undersized. He might fit with a team like the Sabres, though on the surface he's likely not much, if any, value now.
