#2425290 The Overreaction Thread

A softer, more expensive Franzen.

Vanek is younger and a much more effective goalscorer than Franzen. It doesn't get much softer than regular season Franzen.

Getting rid of Sammy will cure Helm's back - book it  :bye:

#2425104 Wings buy out Colaiacovo, will keep Bertuzzi

Posted by dirtydangles on 02 July 2013 - 09:05 PM

Signing an ailing and injury prone cleary to a 3 year deal is INSANE. I understand maybe 1 year but this is nuts - especially if Sammy can't be bought out. Its one or the other in my books.

#2423371 The CapGeek Thread

I think that the Red Wings sign Lecavalier to a modest contract.  With him still getting paid by the Lightning, I believe that he will rank environment and chance to win another Cup above a huge payday.  He's got his money guaranteed; so 2-year, $4M/yr sounds like a fair deal to me.  If he wants to play for the Red Wings, then there's no point paying top-dollar.  I believe he'll either come to Detroit or go to Montreal.  Either way, both teams will probably be able to sign him without breaking the bank.
Next, I think the Red Wings swing a trade with Buffalo for RW Drew Stafford.  Stafford, according to rumors, has been trying to get out of Buffalo since before the trade deadline.  It's clear they're trying to rebuild again and I can't see him wanting to stick around for another project.  For the 6'2", 200lb right winger, the Red Wings send LW Johan Franzen (comparable contracts), C Riley Sheahan, RW Martin Frk, and a 2014 3rd Round Pick to the Sabres.   This trade allows the Red Wings to avoid a decision to buyout Franzen next year (while easing the burden on the logjam at LW) and the Sabres pick up a potential top-six RW, a 2nd-line winger, and a pick next year.  The cupboard is bare when it comes to top-flight wingers for the Sabres and Frk would fit nicely into their rebuilding plan. Sheahan needs to get out of Detroit's system after his arrest.  I can't believe he's still with the organization after the video went viral, but a new beginning gives him a fresh start and a solid chance at making a 2013/2014 roster.
The team trades D Colaiacovo for a 2013 5th Round pick, while it uses one Compliance Buyout on winger Mikael Samuelsson and one Ordinary Buyout on winger Todd Bertuzzi.  Neither player could be traded during the draft and their contracts don't fit with the Red Wings' plan.
Kenny Holland has stated that he wants to bring in a top-4 defensemen (likely an offense-oriented right-handed guy), but short of moving Kyle Quincey's contract, I don't see how that happens.  Maybe something comes along after the season starts (trade deadline?), but for now, I think one big signing and one big trade is enough.

The team re-signs most of it's restricted free agents (LW Nyquist, D Smith, C Andersson) to three-year deals while signing unrestricted free agent RW Damien Brunner to a 2-year, $3.2M contract.  Everything else stays the same.

So the Red Wings finally get to pair Zetterberg with Datsyuk for good while adding a right-handed power forward next to them who can score himself.  Lacavalier and Abdelkader make for a big second line.  Lacavalier organizes the offense, Abdelkader blinds the goalie, and Brunner looks for the open, wicked shot on goal.  The young kids give the Red Wings an impressive third line full of speed and skill.  The fourth line, orchestrated by a healthy Darren Helm, gives the team a physical, defense-oriented line with Miller and Eaves flanking the rejuvenated center.  Emmerton and Tootoo round out the roster.

You lost me at Stafford. You would give all that for STAFFORD? You have got to be kidding me. I wouldnt give Frk alone for him let alone a great centre prospect a 3rd rounder AND Franzen?

Ummmm I love the quote "the criminal justice system should have no place in hockey" - try telling that to the Moore family and Bertuzzi... maybe this defence lawyer could have got big Bert off.

#2421176 NHL considering ban on spin-o-rama in shootout..

Posted by dirtydangles on 21 June 2013 - 09:21 AM

Shouldn't ban it, but should require special "I've been trained on how to properly execute a spin-o-rama" card

I love this for the new NHL. You have to qualify for certain licenses to do things! We could get hitting licenses and players must pass a course but the license can be taken away if an illegal hit is given for 30 days.

#2421063 Flyers to buyout Briere

Posted by dirtydangles on 20 June 2013 - 01:48 PM

No way we get briere. Doesnt make sense for him as a father or us with our cap/roster overload. I can see him going to a NY team on a one year deal.

Domi is a unique skill/all-heart guy that can agitate other teams as well. These guys are the ones you hate on any other team than your own. Id love him if he fell to us. He may not be a big kid but he plays big.

Thoughts are that he's a small center and we don't need more small centers.

I don't think we could pass on him if he fell to us. The only reason he could fall would be the size factor - everything else is there. Gauthier might not be able to produce at the NHL level looking at his current numbers.

#2420995 2013 Offseason Thread

I like our current cap situation. After this 2013-2014 season we have a very thinned out cap sheet (no old ineffective players) that can be filled out well with our prospects which should be more than ready by that point. We can use our amnesty buyouts this year to make room for a couple deserving youngsters (Tatar, Nyquist, Deke) and then add a few more the following years when contracts expire. We obviously need to give big E a bit of a raise next season and our young guys will see small raises this season. As much as I hated the deals holland made last offseason I can see that they were insurance deals that don't hurt us in the long-run.

#2419777 Brunner Contract Talks

Brunner WANTS to be a better player and you can see that as he is developing his game to try to be more helpful defensively. You can't say that about all wings players.

#2418319 Franzen Buyout?

Posted by dirtydangles on 07 June 2013 - 08:35 AM

I think you have to look at amnesty for franzen after next season. We can use his production for another year but there is no way he makes it to 2020 as a useful player. By 2020 we will have current rookies getting nice big deals and we can't afford to have cap penalties hampering us long term. We will have Z's 6mill caphit for the next 8 years so we need to think about parting with Franzen's for the future.
