This was the right call by Blash. He could have tried his hand with a struggling franchise as a flavour of the month signing or he can stay and develop himself further and likely inherit a job where he is set up to succeed. I think he wanted to avoid the path Eakins is on perhaps.
Almquist might not be 100% ready for the NHL yet. But from the little bit I've seen of him, I would certainly take him over Kindl, Lashoff, and even Smith (although Smith does occasionally look decent at times).
I agree the Almquist deserves time over Kindl and Lashoff who haven't really solidified themselves and almost played themselves off the roster. But Smith is much improved and was probably our most consistent dman against a big strong boston team in the playoffs. Smith just needed to feel like babcock trusted him.
I am still loving the Kesler scenario. I am pretty sure Holland really wanted him at the deadline, but the price was too high then. We all know that Holland eventually gets his target, well usually. I really don't think we'd miss Smith or Helm if we got Kesler. We most definitely won't miss that 1st round pick, especially if Vancouver sends us back their 2nd.
to VAN: Brenden Smith, Darren Helm, GRR prospect (no exemptions left,) 1st round draft pick
to DET: Ryan Kesler, 2nd round pick
Dump Kindl and possibly Lashoff as well.
my perfect scenario gets us Kesler, Edler and Booth and we get rid of Andersson, Franzen, Smith, Helm, Almqvist...but that is just me, I am not saying that will be a trade package, only suggesting who I'd like and who I wouldn't mind going if there were a blockbuster between us and VAN...
BTW, we haven't heard the name Hemsky around these parts in a few...right handed forward...Holland loves him...he could be a pickup we weren't expecting...or were we?
Thats overpayment for Kesler and Nucks fans will say it leaves them with no 2C and Helm isn't good enough. Our 1st is fairly high and Smith is a great young player. Helm is the heart of our Bottom 6. You don't get all those pieces for a C that is on the decline and injury prone. Neither side likes this trade. Realistically I see the value as Smith + 1st + Almquist/Ferraro/Andersson for Kesler but again, Nucks fans will cry about no 2C.
Neal is a very productive player and has the size too. However, we shouldn't be moving assets for wingers when we have an abundance of young wingers and Mantha on the way. We should actually be moving winger(s) for a future top 6 C. We just don't need Neal enough to cough up the assets for him (apparently they want multiple wingers for Crosby and Malkin). I WOULD however like to buy low on Letang if they are selling. Letang is the type of high end RD that we need and could come at a discount due to recent health problems and the need for change in Pitts - perfect storm for us. I don't buy the concern for the future that Letang may suffer more strokes because he will be monitored closely for the rest of his life and his stroke came from a PFO and not a clotting disorder or something genetic. All of his other risk factors for stroke such as cholesterol, lipids, bp, blood sugar etc will be lower than the average person as he is an athlete.
Hi people. Just found this place while searching for Red Wings draft needs and considerations. Wow. Seems like a lot of people know what to do!! I think the main hole they need to fill is top line sniper. I wonder if Ovechkin talks are out of the question???
Welcome to LGW where all the speculation is made up and the posts don't matter!
I think bottom line gritty players are a little overrated for this team. Helm, Glendening, Miller, Abby, Callahan are all gritty enough. We need gritty top 6 forwards to absorb some of the punishment that Z and Dats take. A guy like Evander Kane or Wayne Simmonds would go a long way in terms of taking the load off of Z and Dats. Also you have to consider that Nyquist and Tatar are small guys that will take punishment too. I'd be okay with an overpayment for Kane or Simmonds because it will pay off big time for our team in the long run because we don't have any top 6 gritty players. Corey Perry is a pretty perfect example of what this team needs but he is nowhere near available.
I don't think Krug is needed. We have loads of LD players already and considering he is undersized he would be set up for failure on our team - Boston has loads of big bodies around him so he is less exposed and doesn't get run as much. Krug on our team if we played boston would be destroyed by boston forecheckers.
I'm glad we are holding onto our organizational talent. Its time we stopped feeding other teams with great talent from the coaching staff up to the front office. The main lag that happened for us was that Holland never stepped down when he said he would (when lids retired) and we ended up losing Nill and a bunch of staff to Dallas. We need to hold onto Blashill - babs has been here for so long its almost time and we need an option to replace him when the time comes. Don't want to end up with torts.
I don't think Mantha will be on the team next year. Holland will keep with GR at least one year. called up occasionally maybe but that's it.
I agree but we have to keep a contingency plan in place to have him up the year after - we have to have some expiring contracts for Mantha or Pulkkinen barring a trade that opens up roster spots for them.
Abby: I know I said that the Wings need to get bigger and younger, yet as long as Abby's on the team Babs will always want to put him on the top line. I say let's rid Babs of that temptation and trade him.
Abby might actually be decent trade bait. If we pair him with a 1st and Kindl I wonder if we could get something decent. He is young enough to be valuable to building teams as well as competing teams. We have lots of bottom 6 players right now with Callahan and Ferraro out options and our Kid line and Miller-Helm-Glendening bottom line. Abby isn't a top 6 player on a contender. In a few years if you add Mantha, Pulkkinen to our already crowded top 6 with Nyquist, Z, Franzen, Datsyuk, Weiss, etc. there isn't much room for Abby.
I'd really like to get Moulson this offseason. He is the kind of player you put with a skilled C that creates chances. He will bury the chances he gets unlike Abby.
Vanek is likely going to MIN from what the media says but I'd like to hear that Kenny at least made a comparable offer but was turned down - otherwise he isn't doing his job.
I know this is going to be unpopular but I don't want to see any acquisitions on D. I think Marchenko and Ouellet are ready and should be up next year. By no means do I rank these 2nd and 3rd pairings any differently - I think Babs has shown he likes to play his pairings pretty equally:
Kronwall - Smith
Dekeyser - Marchenko
Ericsson - Ouellet
Lashoff (with Sproul as first call-up)
I think that if you split Ouellet and Marchenko up like that we will be just fine. Ouellet won't make many rookie mistakes and Marchenko has already played in the KHL. Those pairings all have size and skating. I know people will want E back with Kronner but I just don't think E is a top pairing guy who moves the puck that way. I think that E with Ouellet could be a very steady pairing that can be relied upon to kill penalties going forward.
Let's face it - we aren't getting a top pairing Dman through trade because they aren't available often and Holland blows at trading. I don't see why we should pay top dollar to get a top-4 guy like Edler or Ehrhoff when we will only create a logjam in our D development pipeline going forward and open up a hole somewhere else on the team. Our kids can step up just fine it just takes a shred of patience.
