Given our amount of injuries we need to take advantage of any slim chance we get, and there is no better way to do that than make home ice at the Joe a fortress for the shortened season; just like we did with our winning streak last year. This is a game we should be winning on paper. Granted Jagr is there but other than that nothing jumps out. In the off-season they acquired: C Cody Earkin, RW Jaromir Jagr, Backup G Cristopher Nihlstorp, D Aaron Rome, C Derek Roy, RW Reilly Smith, and LW Ray Whitney. Earkin had his breakout season in the NHL last year where he played 30 games for the Capitals with 8 points. Nihlstorp came from Sweden and is an NHL rookie at 28. Given Lethonen is there I doubt he will get much time. Aaron Rome comes from the Canucks where he played 43 games and had 10 points with only 1 game played in the playoffs. Derek Roy is an established NHL winger playing more than 70 games per season (barring 2010) for 7 seasons with the Sabres. This is his second NHL team. His career year was in 2007-08 when he had 81 points. His productivity has steadily decreased since then with 44 points last year. Reilly Smith is a brand new rookie having been drafted 2 years ago. He has only played in 3 NHL games. Lastly Ray Whitney is a veteran and a former Red Wing (03-04 season). He is coming off a 2nd best career year at Phoneix with 77 points. He also had 7 points in the playoffs. At 40 he is looking to finish his career on a high note. All in all it seems Jagr, Whitney, and Roy are the players they have bet on this season. 2 are NHL veterans in Jagr and Whitney and Roy is a solid scorer who will lead the first line at center. I like this match up a lot. We swept them in all 4 games last season and it's time to continue the tradition.

1/21: Red Wings 4 at Blue Jackets 3 (SO)

This was a much needed win especially after that 6-0 exhibition match. After they got back to 3-2 I thought this is going to inflict some mental problems on the team, but our leaders finally stepped up. I have always felt that Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall and maybe 1 other player (maybe Howard, he's still young though compared to the other 3) need to truly become the "leaders" of this team. They have all been leaders at a point during the last 4-5 seasons but none of them besides maybe Datsyuk (huge bias from me) is consistent enough to be compared to the leaders of generations past (e.g. Lidstrom). I seriously get that there will probably never be another Lidstrom (huge sigh!) but I want to see the "veterans" take this team to another level when it needs it most. We saw that tonight but too often last season and the season before we didn't see enough of that. At least that is what I have in mind from my limited hockey intelligence. I hope tonight was a sign of things to come from the veterans, as well as Brunner. Also, fair play to Tootoo. I must say I was one of the people on here, granted I wasn't vocal about it, that just hated that signing. I hate Nashville with a passion, as well as pretty much all of their players. But he has surprised me thus far, and his willingness to fight for the team as well as his minutes has impressed me. I think he has taken his minutes situation awfully well considering how much more he was playing per night with the Predators. I wonder if he is gradually being worked in. Either way I hope he continues and gets some more action (at least more than Miller or Cleary). I am really curious to see Quincey the rest of the season. I am pretty sure he doesn't need to be told his Detroit future is on the line. 2 horrible games. I know we have gotten worse in the defensive department but I still expect the defensive end of our game to be for the most part mistake free on the small things (e.g. knowing where the puck is )... it's one thing to be outplayed, quite another to just make errors like Quincey has done the last 2 games. With this win we can look forward, but the team must remember what laid the foundations for this game; high intensity from the word go. Too often last year we played catch-up hockey and given our deep talent we could come back most of the time... but now we have to more resilient and intense from the start if we are to continue our playoff streak. Something tells me we're not going to get a lot of points (even OT losses) like we did last season if we go down 1 or 2 goals early.

That has to be the best game-day graphic I have ever seen. That is pure art... keep up the great work!! As for the game, I am really unsure what to expect. Whatever happens I just hope the boys leave it on the ice. There's so many unknowns in our lineup compared to last season as well as the 48-game format that it makes this "season" a bit of a toss-up. I'm most curious to see how our D-line shapes up considering the great one is gone.

10/12 GDT: Avalanche 5 at Red Wings 4 (SO)

Can't wait for the game tomorrow... I hope this team keeps proving itself over and over again. Some of the things I re-watched against Anaheim was just good to see. I am hoping Bertuzzi, Flip, and Modano can keep stepping up when we need them to over the course of the season. Also, THANKS a ton Drum... whoever did the work... it is really appreciated. I will try and donate once I begin working.

10/9 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Blackhawks 2

Great win by the Red Wings... just what I wanted considering our rivalry, as well as their hype of the Cup win. As much as I disliked the parade, I do have to clap to the Hawks fans for booing Bettmann... As for the game: I thought Osgood played fairly well in the 2nd period as he really saved us with a couple of key interceptions as well as on that Toews 1v1. Defensively I thought Kindl did well coming to play into a tough atmosphere for his first game of the season. I was also happy with the way we played considering the physically tough game last night. Last season back to back games usually ended in a loss during the 2nd game. And as much as Modano didn't shine as he did yesterday, I really liked his dump in which led to the goal and his aggressiveness in certain situations where most of our more technically minded players would either look to puss or dump the puck. There was one backhand he had on attempted on goal where there were 3 Hawks players in the defensive zone waiting for him to dump the puck. Thus far he has offered something different.. hopefully he can keep it up over 82 games. LETS GO WINGS!!

This will be a good test to gauge ourselves early in the season. Osgood will be the player to watch but I have faith... I just want to see how good our 2nd and 3rd lines play. I am hoping that Hudler steps up to the plate like he has done in years past. And I would love nothing less than to beat ... on their own turf. That would be priceless.

I am really glad to see Howard show up... he deserves a shut out... Otherwise I am really pleased to see us play like this considering our past year. ONTO CHICAGO!!!

10/8 GDT: Ducks 0 at Red Wings 4

Playing well thus far.. but we can't rest. Howard just made a couple of key saves... we have to kill the game off. Can't let the Ducks back in it with a cheap late goal in the first.

This is so good to see.. health! So much better than last season. Let's GO WINGS!

10/2 Pre-season GDT: Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs

After a long vacation after graduating and going to Europe I finally started watching the Wings yesterday in the first game of their doubleheader. Today was exciting to watch as the commentators pointed out that the RW were really the Griffins... it felt a little bit surreal watching practically an AHL team with some NHL experience against a fairly well experienced Leafs roster. I am really curious to see if Emmerton can pick it up finally and start producing what is expected. And I agree with the others on here, Mursak seems like he is really good prospect. Hopefully his development will continue.

    Hockey withdrawals

I agree.. every couple of days I want to put my Datsyuk jersey on, but there is no game on, and when I want to wear my sweater I realize it's still 95 degrees outside. I hope this month can fast forward a little bit.

What is it why you're a fan of this team?

I have been a Red Wings fan since 1998 partly due to the glory days. I came to the United States from Serbia in 1997 and had never followed hockey in my life. Then the playoffs for the NHL started and I fell in love with the sport. The speed of the ice, the creativity of the players was beautiful. Why the Red Wings? While they were the best team the latter part of that decade I feel in love with the Red Wings mainly for four reasons: 1. The team shirt: mainly the logo as well as the team colors. 2. The team identity: the class the team represented, as well as the international composition of mostly Russian and Swede players. 3. Scottie Bowman: the man epitomized real energy from a coach that I would love to play for, in any sport. 4. THE JOE --> a real arena for hockey, where folklore is breathed anytime you walk in. Since then I have followed the sport on and off, but in the last two years I re-found my love for the Red Wings, even before the playoffs of the previous season.. this past season I went to many games as I could due to me living on the West Coast. It was an amazing experience. This was a true season to be a Red Wings fan.. living on the edge, and hoping the team wins even when things weren't going well. That's when you realize how much winning means. The Helm goal vs LA in the Staples Center will be a memory I will forever hold with me. That was one of the greatest sporting moments I have witnessed live. For me, the team identity is the most important part of this club. The sheer class and composure the club carries itself with is what all human beings should aspire to. And lastly, being from Detroit is of paramount importance. I couldn't imagine my favorite football team, pardon, soccer team, moving cities here and me still having the same affection. A team is a part of city tradition, and it's instilled within the people in Michigan. Thus, team identity and its location for me are the two most important things on that list. That isn't to say that other things do not matter. It's just that I consider those two reasons the most important.
