He wasn't facing stuart so he couldn't protect himself if you face the shooter in front of the net only a shot to the face can injure you, the protection is non-existent on the side of the skates but plenty on the front backed up with the leg protection.
Yes and when Stu saw this moment of vulnerability he seized it by intentionally hitting Cleary since he is jealous of Dan's recent success. I didn't realize what really happened til just now....

Cleary wasn't standing in front of the net he was in the shooting lane facing stuart with his side, it's pretty foolish to take a hard slapper in that situation.
Yes, he skated from Stu's right to left, you can't expect guys to hold off on taking a shot everytime a player is near their shooting lane. Heck you often see plays just like this where the guy in Cleary's position creates a great screen, this time he got hit. Sucks yes, but this is where our young boys get their chances.

Didn't wings already have a 3-0 lead at the time and stuart clearly saw cleary standing pretty close, why not hesitate for a sec or just shoot the puck deep behind the net for the other player...I just think he should have thought an extra second or two.
This is a perfect example of how little you understand the sport, go back and watch the tape. Its an accident, nothing more nothing less. I'm surprised Cleary isn't getting blamed for his own injury since he jumped, if he would left his skate on the ice it wouldn't have happened either......Freak accident, we'll be fine.
*and it was 4-0 when this happened...it had been for quite some time.

After watching the game last night it made me even more excited for the season. The boys seem refreshed and watching Dats and Z together reminded me of years past. It was also good to see Toronto, who despite the score, moved the puck around pretty well and showed some very good qualties. IMO when they add Schenn and JS they should be in a good position to grab a play off spot. Would be nice to see an original 6 team play better than they have, their bottom of the conference days may be over....

Be careful what you say about LIlja and a Pain Train reference...I got about -6 for insinuating that the nickname was laughable. I also went on to explain how i feel Lilja is overrated on the Wings but not in the NHL, as evidence by his no contract offer.
Im assuming its because he's a "hitter" (not my words)....the only thing he hit was the ice when he tried to kill a penalty.
My thoughts: Pain Train is derived from him getting his ass beat so bad in a fight, that he had a concussion/head aches for over a year, and thus he was always in pain, that felt like a freight train. Pain Train.......or was the train actually what the last blow to his head felt like. Either one im sure.
I can't remember the last time he caused another player pain so yes I agree with NotTooAbby when he said the name is a shot at him.
Not a bad thing here, however I think there are many of us who would like to see him be more physical like he was in Vancouver. This year he had countless opportunities to finish checks but chose not to, If we can get Tuzz to start finshing those checks I think it could be an intimidation factor. I don't want the punch to the back of the head Bertuzzi back but I would like to see him wrecking some bodies, and an occasional goal would be nice.
He's a solid center who would stand out on most teams, we as Wings fans always try to compare new or young guys to Hank or Dats and thats not fair to them. He has the potential to producemore than he has been and I think we will see it in years to come.
