This is just an awful idea. Pieces should be moved but what you are suggesting is not only wrong but irresponsible to the organization and the fans.

I want to just make some thing clear for some people suggesting various things about this 2-3 system. Well any system really. You can run ANY system with ANY 5 players. I have ran a 1-1-3 offensive zone in my career (used when you are substantially weaker than your opponent). This means that you have 1 hard forchecker, one secondary forechecker that reacts with strong side pressure and 3 across the blue line. You essentially then pinch wherever you need to, middle left right. You then have 2 D back the whole time. This is almost identical o a 2-3 system referred to. You just simply have players that need to be in a certain area regardless of their designated position. 

 

Also there are a few things about the transition from offense to defense. Say you had Datsyuk and Franzen as the two offensive players. You are almost 100% limiting them to covering the opposing teams D in the defensive zone. Now when you think about it that is a complete and utter waste of talent to station Datsyuk up there. Every team in the NHL has 2 D and 1 Center playing down low in their own defensive zone. That center can be the guy who takes faceoffs or the first guy on the backcheck who knows what he's doing. That center while he is considered a forward on paper, is a defenseman in the defensive zone until we break out. This is why guys like Datsyuk, Bergeron, and Backes are far more valuable in hockey than just their stats. This is the purpose of a center for the most part, granted there are some centers that are so offensively gifted that their defensive liabilities are overlooked.

 

So just so everyone has this straight:

 

Offensive zone systems are about filling a PLAYER into a need. That player can have any designation they want on paper, but as long as they perform the specific duties of a 2-1-2, 1-3-1, 1-1-3, or any other combination the coach deems appropriate they can run it.

 

Defensive zone has various ways to play defense against the other teams but that is more dependent on what the other team is doing. So for simplicity sake you have 3 PLAYERS responsible for the individuals playing down low. While 2 other PLAYERS are responsible for the Defenseman of the other team.

 

The actual make up of who plays what designated position is almost irrelevant. Granted you want to have the best players suited for each role in their specific role.

 

 

The real question is should we be more passive in the system or more aggressive or let things play out. Right now we clearly don't have the defenseman to leave them by them selves, I wouldn't mind seeing a more passive counter attack type of game while our injured get healthy. 

 

But it also doesn't matter your system when your team makes really bad turnovers that lead directly to goals.

Here's the Wings' motivation for winning the next 4 games.  Toss this classless team out of the playoffs.

I'm almost positive nothing would have happened had they scored, it was 4 v 4, an even strength situation.  Unless there is a specific rule for major vs minor penalty... then id like to know the exact ruling.  Google to the rescue!

The suspension was a message more than a direct punishment for the hit.  It was a borderline hit with him leaving his feet.  If this was the first time he had gotten into trouble or had been a clean player beforehand he would likely get away with a fine or less.  But he had two fines from one game last week in which he was let off easy, you only get so many chances with shanahan.  This is a culmination suspension.

How can you call that malicious in any way? Hemsky is not even looking up, he's staring at the puck on the boards the whole time!

Yea I thought it was going to be a really bad hit... but that looked not nearly as bad.  I would be surprised if he got a suspension as it wasn't that egregious.

I get the feeling a lot if people didn't play hockey and don't appreciate how dirty this play really is. Im ok with 5, just wanted him suspended.

What people fail to realize is the vote is only for those first 6 positions.  Beyond that the fan vote has 0 relevance.  Anyone saying he will get a few days rest doesn't get it.  Jimmy Howard will be in this years asg unless the wings claim an injury.  And one period of work isn't going to kill the kid.

Mark How inducted to the HOF? Really? Perhaps it should be renamed to NHL HOF as it has nothing with hockey worldwide. In Sweden, Finland, Chechoslovakia and Russia and we so many defs that were WAY better than Mark Howe. 100 more that are not there.

PS still I understand for whom the "product" is made.

I understand that in the past in Russia in particular players would get neglected because of never playing in the NHL but come on...  The NHL is the BEST level of hockey bar none.  There is 0 arguing that.  International accomplishments are part of the discussion, Olympic golds, International Tournaments, etc. but they are not the whole of it nor the majority.  A hockey players season is long and consists of many games.  The international stuff is a month at its longer end and ends up happening only every so often.  Olympics every 4 years for example.  It stands to reason that the best players in the world are in the NHL, have played in the NHL, and made themselves HOF worthy in the NHL.  The majority of a players career is done in the league that they play and represent.  So with that wouldn't you have to regard someone with say 1000 points in the NHL higher than someone with 1000 points in another league?  The HOF is for the BEST players in the game of hockey, its not the NHL's fault that the BEST players all come here.

Don't worry everyone, I wore red wings attire today and I'm going to get to watch the whole game.  Every game i've fully watched and worn gear on we won.  As soon as I stopped watching the losing started, Sorry it took me 5 games to get back

I wonder if people actually read the article or just decided to skim the 10 and *****.  I think its a fairly solid list and he goes to explain his picks pretty well.  Jvr isn't new but he is right about his potential.  Sadly only one I see him being substantially off on is Tatar

I know Helm isn't our best finisher, but if anyone has watched him over the past few years and payed attention, his overall skill is just getting better.  He is easily one of my favorite players to watch play.  I really hope we lock him up for a multi year contract after this year.  His offensive game is increasing, can't hit em all

I'm generally thinking that the fans who were cheering were fans who were around during the 90's at a minimum.  The fans who were boo'ing were new bandwagon fans with the mentality of "He play for da Wings, He Enemy, booo!!"  Which is truly sad because he has done so much for that team.  Chelios was traded.  He didn't test the free agent market, he didn't demand a trade.  Dollar Bill Wurtz (sp) traded him to detroit, much like he did to all his star players during that time.  Chelios was an All star almost every year he played in Chicago and also won a Norris I believe.  It really does show the true ignorance of the new Blackhawk fan.  

Its also very true that even though he works for the Wings and is considered a Wing today, he still LOVES Chicago.  I've spoken with his sister and she made it very clear that his heart is pretty much split between the cities and that he would have played there again in a heartbeat.  

So basically don't get down on all chicago fans because a lot of them know what is going on and what to do, last night was just seemingly overrun by the new crowd.  All the Blackhawks fans in the hockey circles im associated with understand Chelios and his value to that franchise.

So is it more about Howard or Price?  I have seen you around always wanting Price and wishing we traded for him... i don't get this sentiment.  I believe price is a damn good goaltender too but he plays in a completely different system.  I don't really want to go into the difference in systems and the different types of saves a goalie has to make in the systems because it will fall on deaf ears but there is a large difference.

I think you are getting at a good point in that you can't rely on a single player to move the puck through center ice.  Although I still think the way they have lines "expected" this year is better.

The reason i feel like this is better is simply because Franzen does so much better when he has someone to take the "big man" role off of him.  Bertuzzi knows his role and will essentially perform it better than hudler could.  Also Franzen is quite good at moving through the neutral zone as well.  As we all know the lines will change a fair amount and i wouldn't mind seeing hudler ont he second line, but I see bertuzzi as the better fit for Franzen and Filppula.
