    Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster

Okay, now that Rafalski has retired, I have updated my roster, and what I would like to see on the roster in 2011-12. But let me say that whatever Mr. Holland decides to do, I won't question it. He has a track record of winning, and he knows what he's doing. That said, here is my updated roster: Forwards: Pavel Datsyuk ($6,700,000) Henrik Zetterberg ($6,083,333) Johan Franzen ($3,954,545) Valtteri Filppula ($3,000,000) Dan Cleary ($2,800,000) Brooks Laich ($2,750,000) Todd Bertuzzi ($1,937,500) Tomas Holmstrom ($1,875,000) Darren Helm ($912,500) Patrick Eaves ($875,000) Justin Abdelkader ($787,500) Kris Draper ($750,000) Drew Miller ($650,000) Cory Emmerton ($533,000) 14 Forwards, $33,608,378 Defensemen: Drew Doughty ($6,600,000) Nicklas Lidstrom ($6,000,000) Brad Stuart ($3,750,000) Niklas Kronwall ($3,000,000) Zach Bogosian ($2,500,000) Jakub Kindl ($883,333) Brendan Smith (875,000) 7 Forwards, $23,608,333 Goalies: Jimmy Howard ($2,250,000) Chris Osgood ($850,000) 2 Goalies, $3,100,000 Salary Cap: $62,200,000 23 Players Signed: $60,316,711 Cap Space: $1,883,289 *Sign LW Brooks Laich to two year, $5.5MM contract ($2.75MM cap hit). *Sign D Drew Doughty to four year, $26.4MM offer sheet ($6.6MM cap hit). *Trade C Jiri Hudler, LW Jan Mursak, and 2013 3rd Rd Pick to Winnipeg for D Zach Bogosian & 6th Round Pick. *Sign D Zach Bogosian to two year, $5MM contract ($2.5MM cap hit).

    Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster

http://prohockeytalk...2011-12-season/ According to the report above, the 2011-12 NHL Salary Cap could increase to $62.2 Million, up $2.8 Million from 2010-11. In another report, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stated, "The NHL Salary Cap in 2011-12 will be set somewhere between $60.5 Million and $63.5 Million. The actual salary cap will be set at the NHL Draft in late June. For the sake of this article, let's set the 2011-12 Cap at $62.2 Million. Now everyone loves to play GM of their team. But some people just see a free agent, and say go get this player. Other people look at the numbers, and try to make silver out of a gridlock. Here's what I would do if I was Mr. Holland: The Red Wings have 15 players(ten forwards, four defensemen, one goalie) signed next season for $46,808,711. That leaves $15,391,289 under the cap to sign eight players to fill out the 23-man roster. The Wings top priority in free agency will be Nicklas Lidstrom. I fully expect the Wings captain to come back, seeing as he is a finalist for the Norris Trophy once again, and is just too talented to leave the game now. That, and he doesn't want to go out with consecutive Conference Semifinal losses to San Jose. Nick took a $1.25 Million pay cut last season to allow the Wings to sign another player(Mike Modano). I think he'd take a bit of a pay cut once again for the better of the team. Look for him to accept a one-year, $5.5 Million deal. With Nick signed, that leaves the Wings $9,891,289 to sign seven players. Expect Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller to re-up next season by July 1. Eaves will take a deal like last season's one-year, $750,000. Miller will take the same contract next season as last season's one-year, $650,000. They are two players that will provide 20-25 points each and are really effective in their roles on the PK. With those two players signed, the Wings are left with $8,491,289 and five players to sign. Now is where the interesting factor comes into play, players in Grand Rapids. I believe there are two players, possibly three, ready to make the jump to the Winged Wheel. First, Cory Emmerton, a 23-year-old center, has scored 24 goals and 75 points the past two seasons, can come in and projects very well on a line with Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves. His cap hit is a mere $533,000. Second, Brendan Smith, a 6'2" 22-year-old defenseman, who scored 12 goals and 32 points and finished plus-7 in 63 games last season, will be ready to don the Winged Wheel in 2011-12. Smith has a cap hit of $875,000. After those players are added to the 2011-12 roster, it leaves the Wings with $7,083,289 and three players to sign. On July 1, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will become a restricted free agent. The Kings currently have 16 players signed next season for $47,893,810, leaving them $14,306,190 to sign seven players. If I'm Mr. Holland, I'd sign Drew Doughty to a 10-year, $47.5 Million offer sheet knowing Lidstrom is nearing the end. If the Kings match, it would leave them with $9,556,190 to sign six players, including other impending free agents Michal Handzus, Alexei Ponikarovsky, and Wayne Simmonds, who last season, totaled over $8 Million in cap hit. If the Kings don't match, the Wings would acquire Drew Doughty, one of the game's best young defensemen. If the Wings signed Drew Doughty, they would have $2,333,289 to sign two players. Chris Osgood has stated he wants to play again. Now I don't know his health standpoint, but if he can be a capable backup to Jimmy Howard, then expect him to re-up with the Wings on a one-year, $750,000 contract. If Ozzy returns, that leaves the Wings with $1,583,289 to sign one player. The last player to sign with the Wings will be Kris Draper, for one reason, to win faceoffs in the playoffs. Sign him to a one-year, $750,000 deal, which completes the Red Wings 23-man roster and leaves them $833,289 under the cap. Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster Forwards(14): Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jiri Hudler, Dan Cleary, Todd Bertuzzi, Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton Defensemen(7): Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Drew Doughty, Brad Stuart, Niklas Kronwall, Brendan Smith, Jakub Kindl Goalies(2): Jimmy Howard, Chris Osgood **Jonathan Ericsson tears me apart. I see the guy's potential, but he just hasn't translated it to the ice. It's a business move not to resign him and to be able to acquire Drew Doughty.

Trade idea between Wings & Hawks

So what are you telling me? That this isn't a realistic trade or Chicago wouldn't do it because it's an in-division proposed trade? I fully believe this is a realistic trade and as far as in-division, remember March 23, 1999? The day Chicago traded Chelios to Detroit. I understand Chicago weren't contenders at that point, but they have their hands tied with their cap issues. Now is the time to take advantage of that. If the in-division part is the reason for your argument, then I fully understand. But Cleary has a NTC too. He'd have to waive it, this of course is assuming he would. But think about it. Chicago Receives: Dan Cleary, Derek Meech, Jan Mursak, 1st Round Pick (2011), 2nd Round Pick (2011) Detroit Receives: Patrick Sharp, 1st or 2nd Round Pick (2011) Chicago would pick up three players including a top-six or top-nine forward in Cleary that are equal to Sharp's salary, plus a pick. Detroit would land a top-six forward plus a pick. It is a trade that benefits both sides. Chicago then would have 19 Players signed for $60,457,701. They are expected to send Huet to the AHL, which relieves them of his $5.625 Million Cap Hit. At that point, the Hawks would have 18 Players signed for $54,832,701 and $4,567,299 cap space to work with. Detroit then would have 19 players signed for $56,742,045 with $2,657,955 cap space left to sign Helm and Abdelkader. Look at these lines for Detroit if the deal did happen. Datsyuk - Sharp - Franzen Zetterberg - Holmstrom - Filppula Hudler - Helm - Bertuzzi Eaves - Abdelkader - Miller/Draper On D, I think we have to throw Kindl in there. Like Ericsson last year, there will be some growing pains no doubt about it, but for Detroit in the long run, it will be good for them. And with that offense, you can afford to throw Kindl in there. Then at the trade deadline, you can acquire a D'man if Kindl isn't performing. They also have options that will be in Grand Rapids, such as Brendan Smith and Doug Janik. Of course, the Wings are set in goal with Jimmy and Ozzy. But both are free agents after the season. However, getting Sharp and being able to resign Jimmy is possible because Draper's $1.583M Salary is off the books. And if Ozzy did come back, he would accept a lesser deal. If he didn't come back, the Wings would most likely promote Thomas McCollum to the backup job, who is signed through 2012-13 at a cap hit of $816,667. Jimmy's Cap Hit: $716,666 Ozzy's Cap Hit: $1,416,666 Draper's Cap Hit: $1,583,333 ----------------------------- Total Cap Freed: $3,716,665 That would be plenty to resign Jimmy(say $2.25M Hit per), and Ozzy(say $1M) if he comes back. After this upcoming season, Tomas Tatar($870K) will be ready to join the Wings, taking Draper's spot. Jonathan Ericsson is also a free agent, and Nick may retire. If he does, then we'd look to the market. The best UFA D'man on the market next season is Chara, although there are RFA's such as Drew Doughty, Brent Seabrook, and Shea Weber, who the Wings could sign to an offer sheet and may get lucky. But that's a season from now. I'm looking to now. I think we'll end up signing Modano, but that trade I believe is realistic when you look deeper into it.

    New MLB Schedule Format

It took some time, but I finally figured out the logistics of a new MLB Schedule Format, with each team playing every other team both at Home and on the Road. Am I the only one who wants to see the Tigers play the National League more often and see every National League team come to Detroit every season, instead of just three teams each season? I still have the 162-game schedule with 81 Home Games and 81 Road Games for every team. If I didn't, the format wouldn't work. Anyway, I have worked out the kinks and want to see what every fan thinks about my proposed new format. What would you think about such things as a home-and-home series with Washington or Pittsburgh or the Cubs or Milwaukee or Cincinnati? What do you think about playing Minnesota, Chicago, Kansas City, and Cleveland 13 times each season instead of 18 or 19? What would you think about playing the National-League style for 30 games instead of the current nine? What would you think about moving Houston to the American League? Do you think this would help baseball, hurt baseball, or be indifferent? Do you wish you could see pitchers such as Stephen Strasburg, Ubaldo Jimenez, or Tim Lincecum each season? I know I do. But I'm asking you, what do you think? NEW MLB SCHEDULE FORMAT MOVE HOUSTON FROM THE N.L. CENTRAL DIVISION TO THE A.L. WEST DIVISION. THEN ALL SIX LEAGUE DIVISIONS CONSIST OF FIVE TEAMS EACH. SCHEDULE LOGISTICS EACH TEAM PLAYS THEIR FOUR DIVISION OPPONENTS 13 TIMES EACH -- 52 GAMES. 26 HOME - 26 AWAY EACH TEAM PLAYS THE 15 OPPOSITE LEAGUE OPPONENTS 4 TIMES EACH -- 60 GAMES. 30 HOME - 30 AWAY EACH TEAM PLAYS THEIR TEN LEAGUE OPPONENTS 5 TIMES EACH -- 50 GAMES. 25 HOME - 25 AWAY TIGERS SCHEDULE LOGISTICS: 1. Realistic Wings-Hawks Trade Idea

Okay, how about this trade: D Derek Meech, RW Dan Cleary, RW Jan Mursak, and our first and second round picks in 2011 for Patrick Sharp and a 2011 1st or 2nd Round Pick? Dan Cleary: $2,800,000 Jan Mursak: $646,111 Derek Meech: $500,000 ----------------- $3,946,111 Detroit would then have 20 players under contract for $56,742,045. The salary cap in 2010-11 is $59.4 Million. They would have $2,657,955 left to sign Helm and Abdelkader. With that, here's the proposed roster: Line 1: Datsyuk -- Franzen -- Sharp Line 2: Zetterberg -- Holmstrom -- Filppula Line 3: Hudler -- Bertuzzi -- Abdelkader Line 4: Helm -- Eaves -- Draper 13th Forward: Miller Pairing 1: Lidstrom -- Rafalski Pairing 2: Krowall -- Stuart Pairing 3: Ericsson -- McKee 7th Defenseman: Kindl Goalie 1: Jimmy Howard Goalie 2: Chris Osgood The problem is the Wings would be left with just $32,955 cap space if they also signed Jay McKee. Their roster would be stacked and filled out, but with that slim amount of cap space, it almost warrants another trade. And would Ken Holland be willing to take that gamble to land Sharp and sign McKee. Now if they don’t sign McKee, then the Wings will go into camp with Kindl as their 6th Dman and $857,955 of cap space left. Ken Holland always likes to keep a cushion of $500,000-$750,000 under the cap. The Wings will go into camp with their top five defensemen set with Lidstrom, Rafalski, Krowall, Stuart, and Ericsson. They are expected to carry seven defensemen with the final two spots going to Meech, Brendan Smith, Doug Janik, or Jakub Kindl. Salaries of those four Defensemen: Meech: $500,000 Smith: $875,000 Kindl: $883,333 Janik: $512,500 We shall wait and see Kenny work his magic, but damn would it be nice to land Patrick Sharp.

Trade idea between Wings & Hawks

Who's to say Cleary wouldn't waive his NTC and return to the team who drafted him and where he began his career? This trade makes sense for both teams. I don't understand why most people replying say "it will never happen" and basically saying that I'm crazy for even proposing the trade. Chicago would be trading for a 40-45 point player, a depth defenseman, and Mattias Ritola, who has more upside than Marty Reasoner, a player as part of the package Chicago received Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, and Ben Eager for. Chicago would be trading one player for three that would take up virtually equal amounts of salary. Ritola looks to be a 25-30 point player, while Meech's career potential is a depth defenseman, and Cleary, as said before, is a 40-45 points per season player. How is this not an equal trade?

Trade idea between Wings & Hawks

The Wings currently have 20 players signed and have approximately $3 Million cap space left since Holland always likes to keep a $500,000-$750,000 cushion under the Cap in case of injuries. The Blackhawks are shopping Patrick Sharp. He has two years left on his contract for $7.8 Million, a $3.9M cap hit per season. In 2009-10, he had career highs in points(66) and was plus-24. He has scored at least 20 goals in each of the past four seasons. The Wings have a surplus of forwards and could make a deal to land Sharp. Some forwards who are expendable include Dan Cleary($2.8M cap hit) and Mattias Ritola($566,667 cap hit), both who are signed through 2012-13. Also, Wings restricted free agent defenseman Derek Meech is expected to be signed and traded. His salary was $500,000 last season. Those three players' salaries total $3,866,667. Here is the roster and cap hits with the proposed trade: Line 1: Datsyuk ($6,700,000) -- Franzen ($3,954,545) -- Sharp ($3,900,000) Line 2: Zetterberg ($6,083,333) -- Holmstrom ($1,875,000) -- Filppula ($3,000,000) Line 3: Helm ($900,000) -- Hudler ($2,875,000) -- Bertuzzi ($1,937,500) Line 4: Abdelkader ($900,000) -- Draper ($1,583,333) -- Eaves ($750,000) 13th Forward: Miller ($650,000) Defense Pairing 1: Lidstrom ($6,200,000) -- Rafalski ($6,000,000) Defense Pairing 2: Kronwall ($3,000,000) -- Stuart ($3,750,000) Defense Pairing 3: Ericsson ($900,000) -- McKee ($825,000) 7th Defenseman: Kindl ($883,000) Goalie 1: Jimmy Howard ($716,666) Goalie 2: Chris Osgood ($1,416,666) 2010-11 Salary Cap: $59,400,000 Total Cap Spent: $58,800,043 Cap Space Left: $599,957 Chicago is in dire straits with their cap issues. They would be acquiring three players for essentially the same salary as Sharp. Chicago, with the trade, would have 17 players signed for $59,253,257. Currently, the Hawks have 15 players signed for $59,286,590. The 2010-11 Salary Cap is set at $59.4 Million. Jay McKee possibly could be an excellent replacement for unrestricted free agent Andreas Lilja, and will come cheaper than Lilja. A great shot-blocker and excels in a PK role, McKee tallied a goal and 10 points in 62 games with Pittsburgh last season. He also has size (6’4” 203) and isn’t shy about dishing out hits. He possibly is the defensive defenseman the Wings lacked last season without Lilja.

Detroit Red Wings 2010-11 Opening Song

Just wanted to see what other fans want to be the opening song for the Wings video next season. I've compiled a list AC/DC - Hells Bells AC/DC - Rock N Roll Train AC/DC - Thunderstruck Airbourne - Raise The Flag Airbourne - Stand Up For Rock N Roll Chevelle - The Red Fit For Rivals - Crash Hinder - Loaded And Alone Linkin Park - New Divide Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart Nickelback - Burn It To The Ground Rammstein - Du Hasst Rev Theory - Light It Up Rev Theory - Hell Yeah Saving Abel - New Tattoo The Scorpions - Hour 1 The Scorpions - 321 The Scorpions - Raised On Rock The Scorpions - No Limit Thousand Foot Krutch - Fire It Up Van Halen - Right Now Zack Tempest - Loaded I love this video. It should be played during their playoff intro next season, of course, that's if they make the playoffs. And with as many injuries as the Wings had last season, it's hard to believe they will have that type of luck again. Those are my 22 picks. If they're going with the No Limits slogan again, then I think the song should be No Limit by The Scorpions. I've always loved Kickstart My Heart by the Crue. It's such a kick *** song and gets everyone pumped. I'd also really like to see Crash by Fit For Rivals, Fire It Up by Thousand Foot Crutch(Fire It Up should be their slogan), Light It Up by Rev Theory, and Burn It To The Ground by Nickelback. Of course, I think the song should be Right Now by Van Halen if next season is the last at Joe Louis Arena. I think they'll play at the Joe at least through 2012 though, but who knows? One thing is for certain, the Wings will have a new home within five years!!! The Joe was awesome, but it's outdated and time to move on. Anyway, what do the rest of you think?

Who should we Keep? Release? Sign?

2009-2010 Salaries Afinogenov: $800K---I increased it to $1.1M based on his production and hopeful willingness to accept less to come to an annual contender. At this point in his career, he has enough money. Basically, it just comes down to what means more to Max: Contending for the Cup next season with a team, hopefully the Wings, or being paid a million more and playing on a Top 2 line with a team such as the Thrashers. Asham: $700K---I think he'll accept the same salary with just as good a chance to contend for the Cup with the Wings next season as he does with the Flyers this season. Of course, he can always stay with Philly, especially if they win it all this year. Brookbank: $525K---I only increased it by $25K($550K), but for a sixth or possibly 7th D'man, I believe Sheldon will come to the Wings, again with a perennial Cup contending team. It will also take off a lot of pressure Kindl would feel otherwise. And I believe Brookbank is an upgrade to Lilja for one reason, physicality. Lils was physical until the concussion from Shea Weber. He's not the same guy he was for the Wings pre-concussion.

Maxim signed a 1 year deal worth $800K with the Thrashers last season. That's why. Let me put it to you this way. You're Maxim, you play on the Wings third line with Helm and Cleary to start, not necessarily where you'll end. That depends on Max. You're going from the Thrashers, a one-time playoff team in its history to the Wings, a team that has made the playoffs 19 consecutive seasons. You bring your offense to this team and you have a great shot at contending for the Cup--something you have never won. Now let me ask you Maxim, would you rather come here and play on our third line with a great chance to contend for the Cup or go to a team like Colorado or stay with Atlanta and make a Million more a season. What means more to you, getting your name engraved on the Cup or making more money? Greed or Champion, what means more to you? Maxim signed a 1 year deal worth $800K with the Thrashers last season. Who should we Keep? Release? Sign?

Here is the final roster I'm going to post on here...at least until July 1. I think some of my decisions would intrigue many people, and while I believe we're a Cup Contender right now, I believe the moves I would make if I was Mr. Holland will make this team just that much better. This roster is based on the Salary Cap being set at $57,700,000. This is according to a report posted on cbc.ca. Gary Bettman has recently stated "the cap is expected to increase by $100-thousand or stay flat." On Tuesday, May 18, Ken Holland reported on WJR 760 he is budgeting the roster with a cap of $57-$57.5 Million. WJR also reported that the cap may increase from anywhere between $59-$61 Million. The actual Salary Cap for 2010-11 will not be released until after the conclusion of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, probably be released around mid-June. 5/D--------NICKLAS LIDSTROM---------AGE 40-----2YR, $10M CONTRACT---------$5,000,000 CAP HIT 8/LW------JUSTIN ABDELKADER--------AGE 23-----3YR, $3M CONTRACT----------$1,000,000 CAP HIT 11/RW----DAN CLEARY------------------AGE 31-----3YR, $9M CONTRACT----------$2,800,000 CAP HIT 13/C------PAVEL DATSYUK--------------AGE 32-----4YR, $26.8M CONTRACT------$6,700,000 CAP HIT 17/RW----PATRICK EAVES--------------AGE 26-----2YR, $1.1M CONTRACT----------$550,000 CAP HIT 20/LW----DREW MILLER----------------AGE 26-----2YR, $1.1M CONTRACT----------$550,000 CAP HIT 21/D------SHELDON BROOKBANK-----AGE 30-----2YR, $1.1M CONTRACT----------$550,000 CAP HIT 23/D------BRAD STUART-----------------AGE 30----2YR, $7.5M CONTRACT--------$3,750,000 CAP HIT 26/RW----JIRI HUDLER------------------AGE 26----2YR, $5.75M CONTRACT-------$2,875,000 CAP HIT 28/D------BRIAN RAFALSKI-------------AGE 37-----2YR, $12M CONTRACT---------$6,000,000 CAP HIT 30/G------CHRIS OSGOOD-------------AGE 37-----1YR, $1.1M CONTRACT--------$1,416,666 CAP HIT 32/RW----ARRON ASHAM---------------AGE 32-----2YR, $1.4M CONTRACT----------$700,000 CAP HIT 33/C------KRIS DRAPER-----------------AGE 39-----1YR, $1.25M CONTRACT------$1,583,333 CAP HIT 35/G------JIMMY HOWARD--------------AGE 26-----1YR, $800K CONTRACT---------$716,666 CAP HIT 40/C------HENRIK ZETTERBERG-------AGE 29-----11YR, $65.6M CONTRACT-----$6,083,333 CAP HIT 42/C------MATTIAS RITOLA-------------AGE 23-----3YR, $1.55M CONTRACT--------$516,667 CAP HIT 43/C------DARREN HELM----------------AGE 23-----5YR, $7.5M CONTRACT-------$1,500,000 CAP HIT 46/D------JAKUB KINDL-----------------AGE 23-----3YR, $2.65M CONTRACT--------$883,000 CAP HIT 51/C------VALTTERI FILPPULA---------AGE 26-----3YR, $10.5M CONTRACT------$3,000,000 CAP HIT 52/D------JONATHAN ERICSSON------AGE 26-----1YR, $1.25M CONTRACT--------$900,000 CAP HIT 55/D------NIKLAS KRONWALL---------AGE 29-----2YR, $7.25M CONTRACT------$3,000,000 CAP HIT 61/RW---MAXIM AFINOGENOV--------AGE 31-----1YR, $1.1M CONTRACT-------$1,100,000 CAP HIT 93/RW---JOHAN FRANZEN-------------AGE 30----10YR, $38M CONTRACT--------$3,954,545 CAP HIT 96/LW---TOMAS HOLMSTROM---------AGE 37----1YR, $1.5M CONTRACT--------$1,500,000 CAP HIT 2010-11 SALARY CAP-------$57,700,000 24 PLAYERS SIGNED FOR--$56,629,210 REMAINING CAP SPACE-----$1,070,790 PROJECTED LINES-- LINE 1: DATSYUK-FILPPULA-HUDLER LINE 2: ZETTERBERG-FRANZEN-HOLMSTROM LINE 3: HELM-AFINOGENOV-CLEARY LINE 4: MILLER-ABDELKADER-ASHAM EXTRA FORWARDS: DRAPER-EAVES-RITOLA DEFENSIVE PAIRING 1: LIDSTROM-RAFALSKI DEFENSIVE PAIRING 2: KRONWALL-STUART DEFENSIVE PAIRING 3: ERICSSON-BROOKBANK EXTRA DEFENSEMAN: KINDL GOALIES JIMMY HOWARD CHRIS OSGOOD With a roster of 24, there has to be a cut somewhere. NHL Rules state a roster can have a maximum of 23 players. With that being the case, I believe the Wings will gamble losing Mattias Ritola by sending him to Grand Rapids for one more season, or at least attempting to do so. The three-year deal he just signed includes a two-way contract during the first year of his contract, however, for him to be sent down to Grand Rapids, he must go through waivers. Reasons for my moves: 1) Hudler is coming back next season. He averaged a point a game in the KHL last season. That will give Detroit at least 20 goals and hopefully 65-70 points that it lost last Summer. I think he will produce to expectations on a line with Datsyuk and Filppula. Datsyuk and Filppula worked very well in the playoffs and Hudler scored a career-high 57 points in 2008-09 on a line with Filppula. 2) Resign Holmstrom. This is such an easy move. Homer scored at least 20 goals in each of the past five seasons. Account for his screens of opposing goalies and Holmstrom has at least another ten goals per season. He's the best in the league at what he does. Re-up him, and I'm banking on him taking a small paycut for the better of the team and for a better chance at winning his fifth Cup. 3) Sign UFA Maxim Afinogenov. If this guy hits the open market come July 1, I'd love to see the Wings go after him. His last two seasons with Buffalo, he scored only 48 points in 104 games. But this past season, he went on a tear for 24 goals and 61 points, for a mere $800,000. There's no doubt he'll want an increase, but if he was willing to accept a $300,000 increase, would he come to a team with a chance at the Cup? It's worth a shot. His lightning speed on a line with Helm and Cleary in it of itself will result in unexpected offense. He turns 31 in September. 4) Sign UFA Arron Asham. Aaron Downey and Brad May rarely found themselves in the Winged Wheel. The Wings need a gritty forward who is strong on the puck while also not being afraid to play a physical game i.e. a Darren McCarty or Dallas Drake type. Arron Asham is that guy. He'll provide the team with 20-25 points, but he also stands up for teammates, drops the gloves often, and he crashes the net, which will account for at least an extra 5-10 goals during the season. 5) Sign UFA Sheldon Brookbank. Andreas, Andreas, Andreas. Thank you for helping the Wings to the Cup in 2008. They wouldn't have won without you. But since the concussion in 2009, Lilja is a liability. It's nothing against him, but he doesn't play the gritty physical game that he did in 2008. I believe this is solely due to the concussion he suffered. In any event, Brookbank can be had for close to $1 Million less than Lilja, and will provide what Lilja did in 2008. A third-pairing defenseman, Brookbank, who turns 30 in October, always thinks team first. He is willing to stand up for his teammates and plays solid defensively. In 66 games with the Ducks last season, Sheldon had nine points and finished a plus-10. He also can provide Jonathan Ericsson with leadership skills and can possibly teach Ericsson how to use his size effectively. 6) I set my extra forwards as Draper-Eaves-Ritola. This is depth, which is the number two most important thing to have to contend, the first being goaltending. These three can swap in with the lower six for a game to give a player some rest. The extra forwards will split time with Line 4 to keep each other healthy and well-rested. Depth is pivotal for teams to win the Stanley Cup. Here is my final roster before Free Agency opens. What do you guys think?
  13. Todd Bertuzzi, who turned 35 this past February, will become an unrestricted free agent July 1 unless signed before so. But before we just say "Keep him, Get rid of him, Keep him if the salary is right, I don't want him period," let's take a look at the numbers. Todd Bertuzzi's first 50-point season came in 1999-2000. In 80 games with Vancouver, Todd posted 25 goals and 25 assists. For the next five seasons after(excluding the lockout of 2004-05), Bertuzzi posted point totals of 55, 85, 97, 60, and 71. In those six seasons, he scored 174 goals and had 244 assists for 418 points in 464 games, missing only 28 games. Since being traded, to Florida and later Detroit during the 2006-07 season, Bertuzzi has scored 50 goals along with 89 assists for 139 points in 231, missing 97 games. Todd made $1.5 Million in 2009-10, and may seek an increase to stay with the club. In short, if the Wings resign Bertuzzi, he will score between 14-20 goals and 25-30 assists in 2010-11, assuming he stays healthy. Now, let's look at some players who can take Bertuzzi's place if the Wings decide not to resign him. The top of the list would have to begin with Vinny Prospal. Also turned 35 this past February, Prospal scored 20 goals along with 38 assists for 58 points in 75 games with the New York Rangers in 2009-10. But to get a better sample of a player who cost a mere $1.15 Million, $350,000 less than each of the contracts signed last summer by Todd Bertuzzi and Jason Williams who amassed a total of just 59 points, let's look at Prospal's stats deeper. Prospal posted point totals of 45 or higher for the last eight consecutive seasons, the low being 45 points in 2008-09 and a high of 80 points in 2005-06. If he's willing to take just a $50,000 increase this summer to play with a Cup contender, Prospal would be a steal, and at least $300,000 less than Bertuzzi or Williams would accept. Other players the Wings could acquire depending on contracts with Restricted Free Agents and Unrestricted Free Agents include: Tomas Plekanec: MTL C 25G 45A 70PTS Plus-5 $2.75M(Expected contract $3.5M cap hit per season) 27 years old SCORER/PLAYMAKER --Possesses excellent speed, hockey sense, and playmaking instincts; Good two-way player, and excels at the face-off circle, in the defensive zone, and killing penalties. Dan Hamhuis: NSH D 5G 19A 24PTS Plus-4 $2.50M(Expected contract $3.5M cap hit per season) 27 years old DEFENSIVE-D'MAN --Plays a good defensive game; Ability to log big minutes and can also be used in a shutdown role; Moves the puck well out of the defensive zone; Great hockey sense; Not very physical. Matthew Lombardi: PHX C 19G 34A 53PTS Plus-8 $2.35M(Expected contract $2.5M cap hit per season) 28 years old PLAYMAKER/SCORER --Has excellent PK skills; makes his linemates better with deft setup ability and possesses great speed; Accomplished face-off man; Is a good two-way player. Arron Asham: PHI RW 10G 14A 24PTS Minus-2 $700K(Expected contract $700K cap hit per season) 32 years old PHYSICAL ROLE PLAYER --Solid work ethic and is strong along the boards; Willing to crash the net to create scoring chances; Willing to drop the gloves with anyone. Carlo Colaiacovo: STL D 7G 25A 32PTS Plus-8 $1.4M(Expected contract $1.4M cap hit per season) 27 years old DEFENSIVE-D'MAN --Excellent all-around skater; Defensive, disciplined, and determined; Ability to join offensive rush; Very effective on Power Play and is used in all game situations; Hard, accurate shot from the point and an intelligent player with an excellent feel of the game. Every Wings fan would love to have guys like these on the team. Maybe one or two of them will be. But as it stands, here is my roster for next season. Players in Blue Text are actually signed. Players in Red Text are anticipated contracts. I really think Lidstrom will want $6M if he comes back. But I'll leave it as is until I hear Lidstrom's decision within the next couple weeks. And the Cap may only increase by $100,000, but as is, it increased $900,000. This is a rough draft, and I won't pen in anything until I hear the final cap. And of course, none of my decisions count. That's why I'm here and Ken Holland is the GM. So many tough decisions, wow. KUDOS KENNY, YOU ARE AMAZING!!! My rule changes for 2010-2011

As an NHL fan who will turn 20 just before the start of the 2010-11 season, I have watched the NHL passionately since I can remember. I vividly remember the rivalry with Colorado from '96 through '02. I remember McCarty's clinching goal in the 1997 Final against the Flyers. I remember Yzerman's Double OT clinching goal against John Casey and the Blues in 1996. I remember Larionov's Triple OT goal in 2002 against Carolina. I remember the joy of winning the first cup in 42 years turn to tragedy one week later in 1997. I was only seven years old then, and I remember the determination of winning for Vladi and Sergei Mnatsakonov in 1998. I'll never forget Stevie Y placing the Cup in Vladi's lap at center ice in Washington. Not a dry eye in Hockeytown at that moment, and one that no one will ever forget. I remember Shanahan's Irish Jig every time he scored. I remember Yzerman taking a puck to the eye in 2004 against Calgary. I remember the joy of winning in 2002, and then be shocked when we were swept the following year in the first round by the Ducks. I remember watching Steve Yzerman's final game in 2006 at Rexall Place in Edmonton. I remember watching his press conference and tears rolling down my face when he announced his retirement. I remember Lidstrom's goal against Dan Cloutier in 2002 from the Center Red Line. I remember the Russian Five. I remember the Swede Eight. These are only some of the moments I remember from the thousands of games I've watched. Since the lockout in 2004-05, I must admit this NHL has completely digressed from the hockey that I grew up watching. Now I'm going on 20 and still growing up and maturing, but there need to be some changes, for the good of the game. Here is what I am requesting, not only as a die-hard Red Wings fan but as a hockey fan in general. 1. Intent to Blow the Whistle - There are four referees, four whistles, eight eyes, four mouths, eight legs, but one sound that is clear, a blown whistle. This rule is so flawed. Plain and simple: The play shall be live until the whistle actually sounds. With the rule "Intent to Blow the Whistle," it gives referees power to wave-off any goal they desire. It also creates controversy of any goal that happens to be waived off and whether the "Intent to Blow the Whistle" was there or not. This problem is so simple to fix: PLAY IS LIVE UNTIL A REFEREE'S WHISTLE ACTUALLY SOUNDS. 2. Video Review - Plays that are blown dead due to "Intent to blow the whistle" or "Goalie Interference" are non-reviewable yet goals off of high sticks or kicked in are reviewable. With this logic, players should be able to high stick pucks in the net and make a case "Intent to hit it down to skates" or "Intent to kick it to my stick, not in the net." Goalie Interference shall be reviewable, whether called a penalty, play just blown dead, or play results in a goal, and shall be determined by a player making contact with the goalie inside the crease, however, goalie interference shall not be called outside the crease. Also, I never understood why they go to Toronto when a goal is under review. Goal judges shall have their own booth with all camera angles within every arena and make the decision there. Better yet, do like the NBA where the officials look at the angles and make a decision rinkside. Plain and simple: Every goal, questionable for any reason or otherwise, shall be reviewable, upon coach or player request, and an explanation be made either way. 3. Trapezoid - I understand why this rule was implemented, but it has only left defenseman vulnerable to serious injury. Because of this, the NHL has two choices. One, they can take out the trapezoid and allow the goalie to play the puck at will. Two, they take out the trapezoid and have no-touch icing. Personally, I like the goalie to have the choice to play it at will. Last I checked, the goalie is a player too. He should be able to play the puck where he chooses, as long as it's on his side of Center Ice. Plain and simple: Take the Trapezoid out and the goalie shall be allowed to play the puck at will. These are three changes that would make the NHL much better. Now I can say let's get rid of all the ticky tacky penalties, and I do, I want the NHL to be officiated the way these past Olympics were, and the way pre-lockout hockey was officiated. I would like to see somewhere in the middle of the road between what is called today, and what was called in the Olympics and pre-lockout. Hopefully, the NHL will make these changes and we can see a much better game on the ice beginning next season. I also think the NHL should be negotiating a contract with ESPN, FOX, and/or ABC. The NHL, in the 90's and into the 2000's, had contracts with FOX, ABC, and ESPN. They now have NBC and VERSUS. Now I'm not saying sign with all these stations because they can't, but they can with at least one.

Percentage of starts next year for Howard and Osgood

I know Babcock and Ozzie had a little tiff during this season. But hopefully both sides will let bygones be bygones heading into training camp and throughout next season. But let's take a stroll down memory lane; Since Babcock became the Red Wings coach: 2005-06: Legace--49 Starts Osgood--29 Starts Howard--4 Starts Final Record: (58-16-8---124 Pts) Playoff Result: L-WCQ to EDM 4-2 2006-07: Hasek--56 Starts Osgood--19 Starts ???--7 Starts Final Record: (50-19-13---113 Pts) Playoff Result: L-WCF to ANA 4-2 2007-08: Hasek--40 Starts Osgood--40 Starts Howard--2 Starts Final Record: (54-21-7---115 Pts) Playoff Result: Won Stanley Cup 2008-09: Osgood--44 Starts Conklin--37 Starts Howard--1 Start Final Record: (51-21-10---112 Pts) Playoff Result: L-SCF to PIT 4-3 2009-10: Howard--61 Starts Osgood--21 Starts Final Record: (44-24-14---102 Pts) Playoff Result: L-WCS to SJS 4-1 Notice the difference between 2007-08, when the Wings won the Cup and the other four seasons. Both Ozzie and Dom played 40 games each, leaving both rested for the playoffs. Now we all know the story of how Dom was pulled in game three in the quarterfinal against Nashville and Ozzie led the Wings back to glory. But this isn't 2007-08 anymore. It's 2010-11, and the season begins October 6th. But why wouldn't any coach use the same method that won the Cup a few years earlier? That's not saying Mike Babcock is a bad coach, in fact, in my opinion, he's the best coach in the game today. But heading into 2010-11, I think Coach Babcock should go with the philosophy of platooning his goaltenders the same way he did back in 2007-08. I think Jimmy was just tired against San Jose. He played so much hockey, more than his body was used to, more than his body could take. Now is it better for the future, time will tell. But Ozzie and Jimmy should be within five starts of each other at regular season's end next April, and the Wings may be hoisting Lord Stanley again next June.
