Well, in his defense, it's not his roster. Ken Holland is buying the groceries. There's not much there to work with, especially on the back end.
Defense has been lacking for years and that's where the majority of our problems are at this point. I've said it a million times it seems like, but I can understand Holland struggling to bring in an elite defenseman. That's tough. I don't fault him really for not landing one because they don't grow on trees and they're tougher than ever to sign. But that he hasn't been able to make more improvements on some level after too many years now via trade or free agency is just sad.
I think it's incredible what Babcock's been able to accomplish with these teams these last few years. If anything, I don't think he gets enough credit for what he's accomplished given how lacking we are on defense in particular.
Like I said the sooner we become less swedish the better, god these guys never take the puck to the net rarely hit and don't like to shoot the puck, it's crazy How Z is only good when the team is good i'm sorry but this ridiculous I have lowered my expectations for this team i'm ready for the rebuild.
I've been a 'Wings fan for 33years. The Red Wings have played with class, dignity and style for so many years, and it makes me proud to be a wings fan! Watching this year's playoffs has been disgusting, from Duncan Keith's "wakey, wakey" taunting of the obviously concussed David Backes, after two, vicious, non called slashes, one of them on Backes(probably having him hear"footsteps", setting up Seabrook), and Matt Cooke, not much needs to be said there, how about Marchand and his "which leg did I hurt?" moment. There is no point to a regular season if it is no holds barred in the post season. I'd rather watch my team get bounced in the first round, than watch them play with no class and make it to the finals. Detroit has won championships by staying classy, and I'm OK waiting until they can win with class, not the garbage that Boston and Chicago feel fits their fans! I grew up in Ken Holland's hometown, my Dad was close with his Dad, all class acts, there is pride in winning with integrity, pride is nonexistent without integrity!
I can't believe some people are crying to fire Babcock... the best coach in hockey. Unreal. Seriously people, take off the homer glasses here, think clearly and realistically. This team that we have, has no chance against Boston. Not because of coaching, because of talent. Boston is stronger, bigger, more talented in every area. From net, to defensemen, to their forwards. Add in the fact that Datsyuk clearly is struggling with his injury still, and Zetterberg as well, then combine the fact that the rest of the roster is full of guys who played in the AHL last year, and you should easily be able to see what the problem is here. It's not the coach. It's an inexperienced roster, filled with injuries up against the team that is probably going to win the cup.
Lets be serious here rather than trying to point the blame at Babcock, or even Holland for that matter... If it wasnt for all these kids currently playing on the Wings that were drafted... we wouldn't even be in the damn playoffs today. The fact that we even are is a miracle on its own the way this season went, without a guy like Babcock behind the bench steering those kids adn getting the best out of them down the stretch, you could shoot a cannon through this forum right now it would be so empty.
Thanks for your post. I really hope those calling for Babcock's head will read it.
I would go even a bit further saying that with the roster we have we play fairly good against one the best teams in the NHL.
How good is Boston at team defense? Just look at their goaltending stats this season.
Rask: 2.04GAA, .930SvPct, 36-15-6-7
Chad Johnson & Niklas Svedberg: 2.10GAA, .931 SvPct, 18-4-3-2
There's essentially zero dropoff from the possible Vezina winner to the no-name backups (who actually had a better won-loss record). Granted, it's harder when you're the top guy and you have a heavier workload, but I think it shows that while Rask is excellent, the Bruins also put him in a position to excel.
