#2556991 Where were team-mates on the Smith headshot

Posted by kipwinger on 15 December 2014 - 11:47 PM

Kip let it go buddy. I'm not going to sit here and come up with a dissertation on why I believe fights should be a part of hockey. It's hockey for pete sake. Entertainment. I like the fighting...I like the big hits...I like the skill...I like the scoring....I hate Crosby.

Oh, I get it.  You like sports, and you like fighting, and you like entertainment.  You like sports entertainment.  Gotcha.

1. The Wings DO get after people for dirty hits. Not every single time but E went after Nolan and in previous seasons Bertuzzi stuck up for Pav. It's not always about fighting, there are guys who make their presence known after questionable hits.

2. I know moderation has been a touchy subject lately but I've noticed the number of personal attacks has gone way up in the past few weeks and honestly, it doesn't bring much to the discussion at all.

Great post finally someone is sharing my views on toughness. A few years ago guys like Dmac, Downie or even Shanahan would have wiped the floor with enemies but now the team is a bunch of small fairies that's too easy to intimidate and that's against a Leafs team that didn't even ice Orr and McClaren. Disgusting for a team that once had the heavyweight belt. And people are still wondering why the season ticket list turned from a waiting list to running commercials... The mixture just isn't there. Former Wings were exciting to watch because they were built in skill, grit and an overall hardworking hockey club who could beat the other team in many ways and stood up for each other. The Lemieux incident nowadays would result in a crying for Quinta instead of taking justice in the own hand and let someone go Berserk soon sad

So your blaming poor ticket sales on the fact we don't fight anymore.... Would have nothing to do with the economy.

I would love for you to explain to Bob Probert's wife and 4 kids as well as countless other familys that lost someone way too soon because it will sell more tickets. Ignoring the long term effects of head trauma due to toughness is ignorance.

#2554807 Jonathan Bernier - Nelson Mandela Comments

Posted by rick zombo on 08 December 2014 - 11:29 AM

Stupid question in my mind. I mean, he knew the guy was famous and that's more than enough. Same thing here I know Mandela was famous but not why had to search it myself so a total nonstory.

It's like asking a hockeyplayer about a famous athlete from another sport. The guys should focus on hockey and that's all that counts, some reporters these days jesus..

Wait. Did you just excuse Bernier of his ignorance because you also didn't know who Mandela was?

And this "hockey players" should only focus on hockey thing is complete crap, by the way. I'd expect these people to have, at least, a general f****** clue about what's going on outside of the sport. I guarantee that Bernier knows who Miley Cyrus is, for example,  FFS.

#2540760 Monthly schedule wallpapers?

Posted by Matt on 15 October 2014 - 07:41 AM

http://www.mw32.com/ is the best (sorry Matt yours got to be too busy for me and you weren't really interested in suggestions.....which is fine)

plus the guy at monkeywrench does all Michigan area teams, like the Griffins.

To each his own, but I don't recall seeing suggestions other than different screen resolution requests. It's not difficult to throw a red tint on a wood texture and just slap logos/times/tv on and call it a wallpaper. I prefer add more detail, additional time, etc., into these as I have done for well over a decade. That's all.

As for everyone else: As long as they're the 16:10 and 16:9 aspect ratio re-sizing them is fine. What I may end up doing is the high-resolution version of each ratio, then allow your PCs/Macs to scale them down to fit.

Came to LGW to get my wallpaper on for October, and can't find anything. Is Matt or anyone else making monthly wallpapers? They are much better than anything I have the talent to make.

Go Wings!

Now the glass and boards at the JLA can sleep easy knowing that Sammy won't be around to hurt them anymore.

Opposition logos have never felt so safe.

#2311251 The Grass Is Always Greener - Johan Franzen

Posted by GoWings1905 on 29 June 2012 - 07:03 PM

IMHO, Franzen "floats" a lot less than people here say who "watch the games". He is not paid for speed. He is paid to be a power forward.

There's a lot of people that watch games that feel Franzen floats. I bet a large majority of Red Wings fans would classify Franzen as lazy. This isn't some random concept perpetuated by a few fans.

As for being a power forward, Franzen isn't really doing that either. Hudler went to the net more in the playoff series than Franzen did. For a dude with as much size as Franzen has, he rarely utilizes it. He isn't physical, nor willing to play in the tough areas of the ice most of the time. I will give him credit that he has a great wrist shot and can score goals effectively in that manner. Though in no way would I call Franzen a true power forward.

#2302134 The truth of our decline.

Posted by MabusIncarnate on 18 May 2012 - 09:20 PM

Holy Jesus am I ever sick of clicking on a new thread, all excited to read something new and then seeing the SAME things posted by the SAME people. I still love LGW but some of the new posters (yes my post count is low but I'm not brand new) are driving me insane.

Honestly this is probably the primary cause of all the negs to the posters above. It's taking something that's been posted about and discussed and debated multiple times in other threads and it's just grinding it further then it needs to go. I've been a member for a long time but i'm relatively new to posting here, and i've found that the majority of the people here are knowledgeable and fair as long as you aren't constantly falling outside of the guidelines of the forum rules.

Fact is, we made the playoffs, broke the home ice record for most consecutive regular season wins, and overall had a successful season even through major injury problems. Filppula is emerging as a valuable young player for this team, and Smith really looks like he can develop into a franchise player. Sure we got knocked out of the first round, but look at all the other excellent teams that fell out in the first round also. It's gonna happen, and i'm not very concerned about the future of this team because we really haven't fallen all that far. Once we go a season or two missing the playoffs i'll begin to look for answers.

#2302066 The truth of our decline.

Posted by Richdg on 18 May 2012 - 01:36 PM

Made this handy little spread sheet. it covers the 5 of our top 6 forwards that are signed for next season. has the names, ages, and 3 stats for each year from 2008 through 2012. Those stats are: GP=games played, PTS=points, and shts=shoots on goal. Black numbers are no change or improved, red numbers are declines.
Name----Age--------------------2008 2009 2010 2011 2012
--------------------------------GP PTS shts GP PTS shts GP PTS shts GP PTS shts GP PTS shts

Zetterberg--32-------------75 92 358 77 73 309 74 70 309 80 80 306 82 69 267

Datsyk----34---------------- 82 97 264 81 97 248 80 70 203 56 59 137 70 67 164

Franzen----33---------------72 38 199 71 59 246 27 21 91 76 55 248 77 56 211

Burtuzzi----37---------------68 40 121 66 44 127 82 44 216 81 45 138 71 38 118

Cleary---34------------------63 42 177 74 40 163 64 34 140 68 46 192 75 33 199

Now for some follow up. Of the 15 numbers for each player, dat has 9 reds. meaning he is declinging just about every year, in just about every catagory. it would be worse but his numbers this year are improved over 2011 when he was hurt. But his 2012 numbers are worse than his 2010 numbers. Second in red numbers is Z. he has 7 out of 15 in red. Cleary has 6 out 15 in red. Burt also has 6 out of 15 in red. franzen has declined the fewest times. Only 5 red numbers. The number that stands out to me the most, is dat's decline in shots. In 2008 he took 264 shots. Then followed by 248, 203, 137, and finally 164 this past year. Granted he played 12 fewer games, but he had 103 fewer shots! That is a 38% drop!

None of us want to se a bad RW team. We all want to win Cups every year. But we also have to face facts. The fact is we need to find our next pair of great forwards that can lead us for the next 10 years. We started this run with Yzerman and federov, then continued it with dat and Z. No where in our organization do we have 2 guys that are potential 80 point per year guys. This is Holland's big challenge. Do we trade? Sign FA's? move up in the draft somewhere?
My personnel opinion is they need to be C's. A wing by himself can't do it. A good sniper-like parise is, can't score if no one can get him the puck. One last thing. Please understand the difference between good and great. dat and Z are still good players. They are not great players anymore. They will continue to work hard, provide leadership, and score 60 to 75 points for a few more years. But they are not guys that can carry a team anymore. help carry yes, but we have to find the next pair to do the heavy lifting.

Chart was fixed, loaded poorly.....
