IMHO, Franzen "floats" a lot less than people here say who "watch the games". He is not paid for speed. He is paid to be a power forward.
There's a lot of people that watch games that feel Franzen floats. I bet a large majority of Red Wings fans would classify Franzen as lazy. This isn't some random concept perpetuated by a few fans.
As for being a power forward, Franzen isn't really doing that either. Hudler went to the net more in the playoff series than Franzen did. For a dude with as much size as Franzen has, he rarely utilizes it. He isn't physical, nor willing to play in the tough areas of the ice most of the time. I will give him credit that he has a great wrist shot and can score goals effectively in that manner. Though in no way would I call Franzen a true power forward.
Holy Jesus am I ever sick of clicking on a new thread, all excited to read something new and then seeing the SAME things posted by the SAME people. I still love LGW but some of the new posters (yes my post count is low but I'm not brand new) are driving me insane.
Honestly this is probably the primary cause of all the negs to the posters above. It's taking something that's been posted about and discussed and debated multiple times in other threads and it's just grinding it further then it needs to go. I've been a member for a long time but i'm relatively new to posting here, and i've found that the majority of the people here are knowledgeable and fair as long as you aren't constantly falling outside of the guidelines of the forum rules.
Fact is, we made the playoffs, broke the home ice record for most consecutive regular season wins, and overall had a successful season even through major injury problems. Filppula is emerging as a valuable young player for this team, and Smith really looks like he can develop into a franchise player. Sure we got knocked out of the first round, but look at all the other excellent teams that fell out in the first round also. It's gonna happen, and i'm not very concerned about the future of this team because we really haven't fallen all that far. Once we go a season or two missing the playoffs i'll begin to look for answers.
Made this handy little spread sheet. it covers the 5 of our top 6 forwards that are signed for next season. has the names, ages, and 3 stats for each year from 2008 through 2012. Those stats are: GP=games played, PTS=points, and shts=shoots on goal. Black numbers are no change or improved, red numbers are declines. Name----Age--------------------20082009201020112012 --------------------------------GPPTSshtsGPPTSshtsGPPTSshtsGPPTSshtsGPPTSshts
Now for some follow up. Of the 15 numbers for each player, dat has 9 reds. meaning he is declinging just about every year, in just about every catagory. it would be worse but his numbers this year are improved over 2011 when he was hurt. But his 2012 numbers are worse than his 2010 numbers. Second in red numbers is Z. he has 7 out of 15 in red. Cleary has 6 out 15 in red. Burt also has 6 out of 15 in red. franzen has declined the fewest times. Only 5 red numbers. The number that stands out to me the most, is dat's decline in shots. In 2008 he took 264 shots. Then followed by 248, 203, 137, and finally 164 this past year. Granted he played 12 fewer games, but he had 103 fewer shots! That is a 38% drop!
None of us want to se a bad RW team. We all want to win Cups every year. But we also have to face facts. The fact is we need to find our next pair of great forwards that can lead us for the next 10 years. We started this run with Yzerman and federov, then continued it with dat and Z. No where in our organization do we have 2 guys that are potential 80 point per year guys. This is Holland's big challenge. Do we trade? Sign FA's? move up in the draft somewhere? My personnel opinion is they need to be C's. A wing by himself can't do it. A good sniper-like parise is, can't score if no one can get him the puck. One last thing. Please understand the difference between good and great. dat and Z are still good players. They are not great players anymore. They will continue to work hard, provide leadership, and score 60 to 75 points for a few more years. But they are not guys that can carry a team anymore. help carry yes, but we have to find the next pair to do the heavy lifting.
If it doesn't include shipping Franzen out of town then his plan sucks.
Yes Franzen needs to go! Completely useless
I don't think we'll see anything major. This is still a great team with a chance at another cup, but with Hudler, Stuart, and Holmstrom gone, I can see Smith up full time and Parise signed. If we sign Parise, I can see Nyquist playing full time and somehow getting rid of Franzen to make room for him. I think all we need is a consistent 35-40 goal scorer.
If Lidstrom retires, we'll have more cap room. I'm good either way if he's back or calls it a career.
Z and Filp are going no where, I'm surprised people want to see them traded .
Sometimes first round exits, in the long run, are a good thing.
I want Parise and Semin. One for Pav and one for Z haha. Get ride of that disgusting thing we call the Mule. What a waste
In all honesty though, don't be biased, read the comments. There is nothing wrong with a little friendly ribbing, and poking fun and getting into this rivalry for the Playoffs. However that's not the case since I've joined here. It's been nothing but blatant disrespect and foul words and harsh assumptions around every corner. You simply cannot have a valid/sensible debate on this forum with a Red Wing fan. It's really no fun for either side. I know I'm not having a blast having to defend myself, my city and my team every time I even say the simplest thing.
"Red Wings in 6"
Me: "I hope Nashville in 6"
"HICK, REDNECK, RETARD, COUSIN F***ER, ETC."
It's shameful and an embarrassment towards real Red Wing fans that I've met in person at home & away games that will actually talk to you like a human and talk hockey, not crude geographical stereotypes or such of the sort.
There are people like this on every team's forum, i really never got the logic of going on another team's forum but welcome.
I have NEVER said the Red Wings were trash or not talented.
I have NEVER dismissed the fact they have a history of excellence eras.
11 Cups is a nice stat for a team, and apparently for a fan to toss around like a used hooker.
Nashville has no Western Conference Titles, Division Titles or Stanley Cups but I hardly hold those stats against them when referencing their current and past talents. Let's be real here the Red Wings have been around what... 86 years vs the Predators 14. It's not exactly fair to compare in that essence. Stop playing hockey for 72 more years then let's compare our team's accolades. Until then stop riding the high horse of a franchise that did most of that before 95% of you were even thought about.
i don't get the whole twitter or tweet thing, but it seems to be a good way to get up to date news.
The very reason I joined, and have never looked back. My life would be so hollow without an email saying I have a new follower. Much like it would be if people stopped +1-ing my posts on here... Ahhh who am I kidding?! NOONE plus ones my posts on here
Once again, a user neggs and is too yellow to debate!
Anyhow, Calling Out now will be useless....change is needed if the players don't show up come playoffs. There are "certain" players who take most nights off. They score in bunches and are very VERY inconsistent. If this team gets eliminated in the first round. Anyone not named Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Smith, Howard, Helm, Abdelkader and Kronwall should be "available." Trade the entire team? No, but no serious offer will be unheard. Unfortunately the guys I listed will probably be the only ones asked about....
