#2567820 Ovechkin joins elite company

Posted by DatsyukianDekes on 02 February 2015 - 03:19 PM

Well I have only really been a Wings fan and if Tatar or Nyquist or pretty much any other winger not named Franzen played like Ovechkin did/does they wouldn't be around.  Two way players is in my opinion the only way hockey should be played and all the rest of those guys are one trick ponies who sit in the slot or on the dot most the game waiting for a good pass or cherry pick waiting for a pass to score easy.  Just not my thing.

Do you even watch Ovechkin? He is one of the most exciting players game in and out. I watched the Washington vs Montreal game the other day, and he was everywhere and hit the post 3 times, dekeing past 4 defenders and flying up the ice trying different things to get through. The media might show you a couple clips of him standing around, that doesn't summarize him. He is also a great passer but doesn't have any finishers (Backstrom is like Datsyuk, wide open net and he will pass to someone else).

Couple of quotes from Montreal players after the game:

"I've lined up beside him a few times," Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher said. "I actually tried to hit him a couple of times. That didn't go well."

Next up, Canadiens center Lars Eller

"Yeah, I've tried," he said. "He's hard as a rock. It's like hitting a wall."

How about you, Max Pacioretty?

"I tried to hit him once and you just can't," he said. "He's a monster, with elite skill in all facets of the game."

Red Wings would open their arms right up if Ovi wanted to play for them, let's not pretend they wouldn't because all he does "he stands at the dot".

Getting Big E off the top pairing will only help with this game. Tavares is probably licking his chops with him out there against him.

So far averaging a goal every 30 seconds in the 2nd period.  Someone tell me why goalies Fleury agrees to play in these games!

Pretty cool way to celebrate the 100th anniversary, would be even more special if there were fewer outdoor games, and if the all star game wasn't a joke.

But still.
Pretty cool.

100th anniversary for the NHL and 50th anniversary of the Leafs cup drought. Perfect!

Good god christ...top UFAs in their ******* prime better ?

The last big piece has been Marian Hossa because he was willing to make it work since then if your standard are Alfredsson (way past his prime) and Weiss good for you..I thought Wings standards are/were higher. It's nothing against either one of them but compared to Marian Hossa they are a downgrade.

Loading up on prospects is nice and all but same must be used as assets given how bad the UFA market has become

Yea that Alfredsson guy was really awful. He only had 50 points in 68 games last year, and was our leading scorer.

frank, "Holland's job is to defend the trade as much as possible"? No, Holland's job is to make this team as competitive as he possibly can, every single year... That involves making trades to improve the team in the now, without mortgaging the future, keeping in mind the team 5 years from now. I'll admit, I was a little shocked by what we had to give up to get Legwand here for a few months, and I was a little disappointed at the time. However, if anyone thinks, that trade mortgaged the future, or even set us back, are not looking at things clearly. Jarnkrok is a pretty decent young player, and I think he still has the potential to be a 40-50 point guy in this league. But that's the type of production that can be replaced any year by a FREE agent... which in my opinion has already been done this past summer, with the signing of Tomas Nosek.

People really need to get over this minuscule botch on Holland's resume, it was one minor bad, not awful trade... Also, just because it doesn't matter to you, believe it or not, the streak is important to a lot of fans, and the entire organization, Holland did a great job in keeping that intact.

Bingo. People seem to forget the most important thing to an organization is making the playoffs and getting a ton of extra revenue, not necessarily to please the fans by not trading Jarnkrok to miss the playoffs. It isn't all about us fans sometimes, in fact I have no issue with the move then, and still don't. Anderson was our #1 center due to all the injuries, we would have bombed the rest of the season if not for this move.

People need to get over it and realize we are spoiled, imagine having the Leafs for a team or Buffalo, would you even watch half the games? We should be thankful Holland is running this team and making such moves instead of falling in the standings (which I'm certain a portion of the fanbase would stop following the Wings).

leave it to LGW to include the classic whooping boy on a goal that he had nothing to do with

I agree. No way Mrazek is to be blamed on that play. Would have been a great stop if he had made the save but man that's a terrible giveaway and such a fast play your not expecting.

Babcock musta yelled A LOT between periods lol

Doubt it. Good ole Danny boy came down from the press box and voiced his opinion, his leadership is strong.

The coach of the Pens for that streak? Everybody's favorite announcer, Ed Olczyk.

Looks like they didn't use enough "Subtle Inference" otherwise they might have won more games.
