#2606670 Free agents this off season

Posted by amato on 08 May 2015 - 06:45 AM

JVR is one player I've wanted to have for a while now. I just don't see Holland giving up the necessary players to get him though.

He's only 26 too and could easily be a part of their rebuild unless he requests a trade out of that gong show. But I haven't heard anything even hinting at him being unhappy there unfortunately.

For Franzen's case, he would still get paid, right, if he went on LTIR.

Yes, he would still get paid his salary.

“I feel a lot better. I was in a really dark place maybe not the first month because you think it’s going to get better. But then when it doesn’t get better, you start wondering.”

“Certainly the message the last month was he wanted to play,” said Red Wings’ GM Ken Holland. “He told us a couple weeks ago he felt great and was on the right path. If we advanced in the playoffs he was hoping he’d be available. Then he had a bit of a setback.

“People with concussions it’s hard to know, but the hope is over the summer he gets 100 percent healthy.”

As for his future in the game, both Franzen and Holland are unsure if the Wings’ forward will play again.

“I don’t think anybody knows,” Holland said. “When you’re dealing with people that have concussions and he’s (had) a bit of a history. That’s a decision that’ll be determined between Mule and Dr. (Jeffrey) Kutcher.”

Added Franzen: “I have no clue, but I’m just happy I’m feeling better. Hopefully, it’s going to progress a little bit every week and I will be fine.”

Poor guy, glad to hear he's doing better.

The article also mentions that he'll likely stay on LTIR if he decides to stop playing.

As mentioned before, I hope he hangs them up just for his long term health and his children's sake

#2606093 Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"

Posted by amato on 05 May 2015 - 10:45 AM

Mantha responds (quite professionally too) :

Mantha didn't dodge that after the Griffins eliminated the Marlies.

"Personally, I think I underachieved a little bit," he said. "Obviously, I would have liked, say 50, 60, 70 points. That was my goal at the start of the season. Obviously, I didn't achieve that, but it's not over.

"I could have a great impact in the playoffs. Who knows? Only one goal could make a difference between winning a series or not. A block shot, one-on-one battles. It's not over and I want to show them I can still play great hockey."

"I need to work on my strength, for sure," he said. "I need to work on a lot of aspects of my play, like getting quicker on my skates ... I got better as the year went along but I need to keep growing for the summer."

"Obviously, I would have liked to score my first shift, first game but that's always the way it goes," he said of his start to the playoffs. "I just need to keep pushing and play even harder."

edit: also from that article, holland's thoughts on Mantha's season....

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, when asked about Mantha, said his future will be determined by how he reacts to this season.

"I think he's going through adversity," Holland said. "And I think when you (face) adversity in life and learn to deal with it, you become a better person and a better player. I'm sure he expected to score a lot of goals down here.

"Lots of players down here (in the AHL) are going to be in the NHL in the next couple years. What he knows he has to do is go home and hit the gym hard in the summertime. You got to come to training camp in September determined that you're not getting a conversation that you're going back to Grand Rapids. And if you do, you build upon what you've done."

Yeah, trading him after one mediocre season after coming off a broken leg at age 19/20 doesn't sound like the red wings way.. seems like this is more to try to get Mantha working harder in the playoffs and motivating him to work hard this off season. Hopefully he realizes the potential he has.

I believe they prefer to be referred to as "Ouverrated Gutteaur Trash du Montreál"

This makes me sad that I can only like a post one time :P

The suburbs of Detroit are some of the most affluent in the country.  And downtown is WAY nicer than it was 10 years ago.  It's on the uptick for sure.
Plus, 3-5 million (or whatever Babs will get) goes a lot further in Michigan than it does in California.  Just food for thought.

Not too mention the new arena coming soon and all that.... Detroit is only going to get better. I'm excited for it.

#2605362 Who is the coach next season?

Posted by amato on 01 May 2015 - 12:59 PM

Babcock expects decision in about 10 days as far as his future with the red wings goes. Doesn't know anything yet.

Babcock reiterated he doesn't have skill set to be GM. Not interested in it. "Do I want to have input? Yes. Do I have input here? Lots."

Chuck Pleiness @wingsfrontman

Babcock: Says people are trying to read into everything I say. Kenny and I haven't even met. We meet. I'll have a better handle.

Kindl gone and Wayne Simmonds in the top 6?

Wings trade for Simmonds, and then I wake up.... it's a recurring dream of mine :P

What are the chances the Pens fire their coach and get Babcock?

I think they already announced that their coaching staff would be back next year.. babs being available could change things though, no doubt.

If Babcock doesn't coach the wings next year though, I hope he goes to the western conference.

Sign one of green/cody franson, trade for Phaneuf

So I doubt that happens but I think at least one of green, cody, or Phaneuf will be here next season.

I'll only be worried about Babcock leaving if Hitchcock leaves the blues. And really not even that worried then. Why would babs go to another rebuild (oilers, leafs, sabers) when he just lived through ours..

Babs will be back in hockeytown. Let's just hope we can sign an actually quality rh d man (no offense Zid).
