Red Wings Rebuilding and Adapting to Maintain Dominance

The Detroit Red Wings have been in a rebuilding phase since Brian Rafalski hurt his knee and retired. But with Brad Stuart and Nick Lidstrom gone, this sends the Red Wing organization into a much deeper rebuilding process. We are the victim of our own success. The Wings were so dominate for so long that fans around the country figured who ever won the Detroit/Colorado series would become the Cup Champion. The Eastern Conference could only hope the two teams would beat each other up to have a chance. But not even the mighty Avalanche could keep up with the Red Wings. As a result the NHL introduced a policy of parity among teams. That’s why I laugh at all the knuckleheads on this forum who attack Kenny Holland and the Red Wing management. These are the same people who forced the NHL to change the rules toward parity.

The Wings not only dominated the ice with leadership and skill, but their marketing dominated even the NHL front office through its Hockeytown campaign. They redefined the game with the left wing lock and a specialized system which was unique to the league. The Wings dominated with an active owner willing to commit the resources for developing talent and building morale. The Wings dominated in attendance and fan base around the league. But the biggest domination has been in the draft and evaluating talent. It really would have been scary if 11th round pick Vladimir Konstantinov played a full career alongside Nick Lidstrom.

Kris Draper for a dollar from Winnipeg!
Kirk Maltby a trade with Edmonton in '95 for defenseman Dan McGillis! WHO IS DAN McGILLIS!!!!
Vladimir Konstantinov 1989: 11th round, (221st overall)
Sergei Fedorov 1989 - 4th round (74th overall)
Keith Primeau to Hartford for Brendan Shanahan!
Nick Lidstrom 1989 - 3rd round (53rd overall)
Slava Kozlov 1990 - 2nd round (45th overall)
Bob Probert 1983 - 3rd (46th overall)
Joe Kocur 1983 - 5th Round, (88th overall)
Johan Franzen 2004 - 3rd round (97th overall)
Darren Helm 2005 - 5th round (132nd overall)
Pavel Datsyuk1998 - 6th round (171st overall)
Valtteri Filppula 2002 - 3rd round (95th overall)
Tomas Holmstrom 1994 - 10th round (257th overall)
Henrik Zetterberg 1999 - 7th round (210th overall)
Jonathan Ericsson 2002 - 9th Round, (291st overall)
Chris Osgood 1991 - 3rd round (54th overall)
Jimmy Howard 2003 - 2nd Rnd, (64th overall)

This proves the Wings didn’t just throw money at players! They built a dominating franchise in all phases in the sport!

As Red Wing fans we need to accept this transition of rebuilding and not demand trades for overpriced forwards like Rick Nash ($7.8 annually). Don’t trade the youth… develop the youth! The NHL has changed the rules, now we need to adapt and dominate like we have in the past.

The following list of Red Wing youth all have a tremendous chance to contribute to the organization.

#2294692 23 game home win streak

Posted by luvpucks on 20 April 2012 - 09:50 PM

Dear LGW,

You guys are some whiney *******. Ban me for this I don't give a s*** I hardly post on here anyway but give me af****** break. Detroit set 2 records this year that no other team has been able to do for decades. Home wins and consecutive playoffs. There is a Stanley cup champion every year.

So the f*** what if they didn't win this year. New season starts in 5 and half months. Some "fans" some of you guys are. Thank you Wings for an entertaining year. Better luck next year.

A fan always proud of his team, win or lose.

Well, I guess I was wrong. I said Wings would win 2 games in this series and they won only one. I'm sorry I will try to be more accurate next time.

They went down with a whimper.

No level of experience or skill can top great goaltending, excellent defense and speed, speed, speed in today's NHL. Howard and Detroit's defense have a lot of work to do before next year starts.

#2292840 Hometown discount for Nick next year?

Posted by LeftWinger on 19 April 2012 - 03:50 PM

The Detroit Red Wings aren't ever going to let Nick walk.

I really hope Nick comes back and is able to regain his early-season form. He's earned the right to keep his salary if he wants to play another season. But, I think he definitely has to understand that a sizeable paycut would really help the team out--and give him the best chance for a Cup.

I am sure he meant retire in that sense, but I agree. If Lidstrom even sniffs more than $2M, then he needs to retire. This team needs a huge overhaul and getting rid of his salary is a great place to start. IMO, he needs to retire, but what will happen is, he will tell everyone he is waiting to see how his ankle heals, then he will handcuff Holland all summer (not that I expect Holland to do whats right for this team anyhow) and the top guys will all be gone...Then Lids will decide late August that he is retiring...Ok, ok, I joke about that one, but he needs to decide before July 1st, preferably by the draft so Holland can start formulating a plan...

"Let him walk" ??? Never!

Sure a pay cut would be nice, but my guess is somewhere a lot closer to 4-5m.

Too much...if they re-sign him for that much, this team is screwed next year. If they want Suter and Parise, they need to be able to offer $14M-$16M between the two of them. Getting only one of them is not enough. Like I said, with the way he is playing and the lack of healing, he needs to seriously think about retiring...

edit: You people that don't agree with this are stupid. He is obviously struggling because of injury, if he cannot fully recover he needs to hang em up. If you dont agree with that then you are dumber than I thought. Of course since you just neg and don't say why we'll never know what your thoughts are. They are probably just this anyhow "Wah Wah, don't say Nicky will retire..he is God!"

Yes for Franzen but good luck with finding someone taking that albatross of a contract. The other 2? Holy bats*** crazy idea, Batman.

It's time to go with the youth and get bigger and stronger. Bert,Homer and Lidstrom all need to retire. Hudler needs to go play in midget league.
Howard needs another goalie to push him for the starting job.

Feed not the troll.

Gotta point, maybe its LeonardSankar <_<

"We have more cups than you" jab that is universally known as the Bandwagon Red Wings insult.

Well the Florida Panthers could say the same thing.....

I don't think he would care about that. I think the point of it was, "don't use our s***." You can play your wiffleball all you want.

that ping pong table might of had a red wing germs on it,so i am glad that bertuzzi took it,would not want the preds players to catch something before they take game 4 tomorrow

#2288722 Retribution for clean hits...

Posted by cprice12 on 16 April 2012 - 08:11 AM

The rough stuff after a clean hit is fine...and often necessary.

You have to let the other team know know that if they do that stuff, they are going to have to answer for it.
Clean hit or not, you don't want the other team thinking they can dish out hard hits all game long without repercussion...so next time, maybe they think twice about dishing out a hard hit.

It's all about team toughness and sticking up for your teammates.

You mean the last two offseasons and trading deadlines didn't make you lose any faith in Holland?

If he is let go I will lose complete faith in Holland.

There are no real options available and Babcock, while partial to certain players at times, is a damn fine coach.
