it's way too early to tell if Brunner is worth big money. He's only played 19 games. We don't even know if he has the gas to play a full 82 game season plus playoffs. (the Swiss play only around 50, less physical games)

 

It's Kenny's best interested to get him signed now, before he proves that he can score at this pace for 80 games for more than a season or two.

 

If he continues to prove himself, YIKES, is he in for a big payday.

What happens is Dats gets the benefit of the doubt because he actually plays pucks with his skate like that on purpose.  Like in this case, he receives the pass at his feet either before or at the blue line, and the refs who are so accustomed to him using his feet gave him "possession" even though he technically skates ahead of the puck across the line.  He maintained possession and no one was checking him for the refs to say he didn't have it.  If that had been Tootoo it would've probably been called offsides.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that if the puck is within 8' of Pavel, then he has control of it. Doesn't matter who has the puck.

Insert the standard "small fast forward problem" here. I like Helm, but guys can't help if they are always in the training room. Due to his size and style of play, he might be a guy that misses 30% of the games every year. Misses or is playing hurt....

I think this year, he got caught out of shape and thinking there wouldn't be a season and hurt his back trying to hard to get back in the swing of things.  It didn't have anything to do with him being an undersize grinder.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the owners first contract proposal include a clause to limit player contracts to 5 years and less?

How many of you give 100% effort at your job 100% of the time?  How many of you have played a sport, tried your damndest and things just didn't go as well as you wanted?  It's a sport.  It's an exhausting sport.  Not all your shots will go in.  Not everything always works.  And sometimes you get lucky.

I understand it's frustrating when you feel like someone is not trying, but for what he provides and what he is paid, Mule is an absolute steal.  He's not going anywhere, no matter how many times people suggest it on these boards.

No he wouldn't.  He's getting paid the same no matter what now, that's how contracts work.  That is unless, of course, he has bonuses in his contract, but I'm too lazy to check.

I agree with this.

Franzen is a $4 million dollar guy that leads our team in scoring.  If he was a guy who scored 50 goals, he would be making a couple million more.  He is getting compensated accordingly and appropriately.

If he started skating, back checking, and generally stopped playing like a ***** he would get paid more. I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. I don't think anyone would.

Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful and insightful message.  In all my years of being the Wings' GM I've never once not made the focal point of my team its defense.  I've always over-invested in goaltending and offense first, because so many other teams have won the amount of Cups the Wings have solely based on that recipe.

Now this off-season one of the greatest defenseman of all time has retired and we inevitably lost another of our top 4.  On top of that, I've got $20+ million to spend, and you figured this was the moment in time I would pick to stop putting every single effort into our defense first???  Due to your message, I'm now awake.  I won't try to sign every single offensive UFA first.  Thank you for stopping me from making the biggest mistake of my career.  I couldn't have done it without you.

I agree with you today. Helmer's our bottom 6 MVP. He will get 2 million plus. And he won't be holding anyone hostage get it.  You guys putting him down for less than 1.5 into your cap geek  calculations are in for a let down.

slightly off topic, but does anyone regret having Kris Draper retire?  after our top two guys (or 3 counting Val), he was better the last two years  than anyone that we have now.  

It's the playoffs, we all know how this works. Suddenly all common sense goes out the window. Things that weren't penalties in the regular season suddenly are. Things that are suspensions in the regular season suddenly aren't. Wouldn't be the first time and nothing shocks me anymore.
