#2232460 Fistric destroys Niederreiter

Clean hit. Nothing there that is any different than the collection of ones we see from Kronwall. He doesn't leave his feet (jump) to lay the hit, but powers up into it when contact is made.

Thanks for the great feedback last month everyone! I do like the inclusion of the Grand Rapids Griffins schedule, but I'm trying to find an effective way of applying it to the current rendition without it getting too busy -- especially at smaller resolutions. Speaking of (slightly) smaller resolutions: You can now use the LGW Calendar Schedule Wallpaper on your iPhone4/S and your iPad/2! The iPhone4 version is specifically formatted for your lock screen.

I'd love your feedback on these! (Specifically the iPad version -- I don't personally own one, so I wasn't able to test the layout against any pre-existing lock screen issues like I could with the iPhone4. Also, I'm definitely open to adding versions for Android devices -- but I'd base it on the highest, most-popular screen resolution and I'd need a template guide to avoid the same on-screen o/s features.)

Enjoy!

I'm changing it up a bit this season and NOT going with a monthly "featured" player (at least for this month, depending on feedback). Oftentimes the addition of a player messes with the layout when adjusting for other aspect ratios, or I have a rough time finding a nice, high-resolution picture to use. I hope you like this year's edition!

#2199234 Chris Osgood announces retirement

Posted by Matt on 19 July 2011 - 06:45 AM

I'm honestly surprised that he's retiring via a conference call -- shocked, really -- even if he is taking up a position within the organization. Perhaps this was Osgood's personal choice as I'm sure a press conference in the Olympia Room and a retirement forthcoming at least a year before the player wants to reach that point is going to be extremely emotional.

Thanks for the memories, Ozzie. It was a helluva ride.

He has to be coming back. A player with the history he has with this club, three Stanley Cups, does NOT retire via a conference call with the media. They'd do an actual press conference in the Olympia Room in the same manner as Brian Rafalski, who has a much less storied history with the franchise.

You re-sign for 1-year at a bargain-basement salary with incentives via a media conference call.

#2192233 Changes in the offseason

Not sure why, but for some reason I think the Wings may be serious players for Richards come Friday. Cement the 2nd line center and PP point, Hank plays with Pavel, clutch player... Key would be accepting the Wings' new "self cap", which I would assume would be Datsyuk's $6.7m/yr, which I don't consider a big sacrifice when you combine it with what his agent said Brad is looking for: a cup contender and a hockey market.

If the Wings can pull of a miracle at the $6.7m they still have plenty of cap space to throw around to land a decent defenseman, goaltender, etc. (Honestly, I would prefer they go for an impact player and a lesser defenseman than overspend in a seller's market on Wisniewski/Ehrhoff when the Wings will be right back in this position next summer.)

If Holland is somehow able to pilfer off Hudler that'd make it even easier.

Oh, the joys of dream scenarios...

Posted by Matt on 24 June 2011 - 11:13 PM

I will say that I'd be shocked if the Wings keep all of those 2nd rounders and use them to draft players tomorrow. You've got Nick for one more year, it's additional ammo you can use to bolster the roster. Use it!

#2189381 Habs shopping Wisniewksi's rights + for a 2nd rounder

Even if they did lose out on him, not worth a 2nd. We are the Wings. We can sign a UFA. Honestly if we missed out on him and had to go down and sign someone like Andy Greene or Montador. We could take that second pick and trade for someone better.

Oh, please. The "WE ARE THE WINGZ" talk only reaches so far. And if we did miss out on him and he was the Wings' true target... Who are we going to get for that second rounder that's better and available? At that age, skill level, etc.. Let me know and ease my mind a bit.

BRYZ WAS TRADED FOR A 3RD!!! That was a while ago, and included the number one goaltender, where there is only two quality UFA's. Liles got traded for a second for crying out loud. Not the rights.

Comparing a defenseman to a high-priced goaltender is apples and oranges. Phoenix had a VERY limited market to sell him to because of all the talk from Bryzgalov's camp about breaking the bank this summer and the fact that he's gotten shelled in the playoffs for two years now. Phoenix was lucky to even get anything, let alone a third, before he hit the market. Heck, Vokoun was still out there, so that even further diluted the market for elite netminders.

The market for young, skilled defenseman about to hit free agency is markedly higher.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

If this were to happen, and I give it a 1% chance. I would demand Holland retires immediately.

Ugh, I wouldn't make that deal even if there was a contract in place.

Bottom line, he is from here. If the kid wants to play for the Wings he will have his chance to play for us. If he wants money more than that, would theyf****** be able to convince him to sign before the UFA anyways? When you are talking about a UFA, unless that guy is going to be the most coveted player at the position why would you give up a second rounder?

The only way I see a trade like this happening is if Montreal grants Detroit permission to speak with Wisniewski's agent prior to July 1st (think Marian Hossa in 2009, though Detroit didn't trade him prior). If they have a deal in place and Detroit doesn't want to run the risk of another club offering bigger money and term clouding things you make that deal. That's it.

The moves made today now makes Chicago a potential suitor (another tour there? meh), and the Montreal beat writer that first mentioned the Habs were shopping his rights replied to me via Twitter that he's heard on the draft floor that the Wild were interested in trading for Wisniewski's rights as well.

There are plenty of suitors for Wisniewski -- and all the warm fuzzy "pls home HOME!!!1!" talk means less and less the more years and million(s) you attach to a contract. Make no mistake, if Wisniewski hits the open market I would be shocked if the Wings would have the highest offer on the table for him.
