Holy Jesus am I ever sick of clicking on a new thread, all excited to read something new and then seeing the SAME things posted by the SAME people. I still love LGW but some of the new posters (yes my post count is low but I'm not brand new) are driving me insane.
Also, number9 took the words right out of my mouth. "Can't win it all every year..."
Then don't read and post on it. Pretty simple.
Didn't you already over sing this tune on another thread...like...a couple days ago? No matter, I'll happily present you the real truth again.
First off, Cleary and Bertuzzi CAN play in the top 6, but they will likely see time in both the bottom and top 6 to make room for our YOUNG players (yes despite your oversights we do have them). We also may add another top 6 forward like Parise through FA this year which would also force those two into the bottom 6.
Now let's look at scoring percentage...since injuries will inherently impact and flaw all the stats you chose.
Cleary (In and out of the Top 6) 2007/2008 = 66% 2008/2009 = 54% 2009/2010 = 53% 2010/2011 = 67% 2011/2012 = 44% - down year (nagging injury)
Bertuzzi (In and out of the Top 6) 2007/2008 = 58% 2008/2009 = 66% 2009/2010 = 53% 2010/2011 = 55% 2011/2012 = 53%
Those numbers are the definition of strong top 6 players and VERY consistent play.... 87% (Datsyuk) 84% (Zetterberg) are also arguably not AT ALL down years for a top 6 forward. Yet, because Datsyuk and Zetterberg are among the top 10 forwards in the league (offensively AND defensively, and yes even at this age) we'll call those down years for them You also conveniently left Filppula, Nyquist, and Hudler out of your evaluation....Those are 3 young players who WILL be on this team next year. (Hudler the only one who may get cut, but who would be likely replaced by an upgrade anyway)
Hudler (In and out of the top 6) 2007/2008 = 51% 2008/2009 = 69% 2009/2010 = did not play 2010/2011 = 50% 2011/2012 = 61%
Hate to burst your bubble but we have one of the highest scoring and most capable Top 6's in the league....And players like Nyquist/Filpulla/Hudler are getting better and taking on larger roles in the Top 6, While Datsyuk and Zetterberg continually show us Lidstrom-like ageless play....And even if we add no one to the top 6 this offseason...that still leaves us with 8 players who are capable of playing in the top 6...
While our team does have its problems and things that should be modified, the fact is the problem is not Datsyuk or Zetterberg......Your whole argument seems to rest on the fact that you think we need All-stars like Yzerman/Federov and Datsyuk/Zetterberg in order to win cups.....Guess what? It's not about the name on the back, it's about the logo on the front. This is a TEAM game, and no player or pair of players can carry any team to a cup....We need a well rounded team with all the right role-players and leaders....and right now we need size and grit in the bottom 6, a back up goalie, and maybe a sniper....not a new Datsyuk or Zetterberg
Where is crymson when you need him to knock some sense into people
I provid proof with real actual numbers and you talk about some % that is tied to what exactly? Some fantasy league % doesn't win games. Goals do. Either by scoring them or preventing them. Thought you would know that.
That's where our bottom 6 needs to be. Now, I like Holmer as much as the next guy, but....
Can someone please explain to me why Paul Gaustad is so highly though of around here? He doesn't score (7 goals, 14 assists), he doesn't fight (4 fights, 2 wins, 2 loses), he's not that big (6'5, 212 lbs), he's not fast, and he makes 2.5 million dollars. Presumably everyone wants him because he's a defensive forward who's good in the faceoff circle. We definitely don't have anybody like that...er...Justin Abdelkader: (8 goals, 14 assists), (6 fights, 2 wins, 4 loses), (6'1, 215 lbs.), is faster, makes 1.7 million less, and is a defensive forward who's respectable in the faceoff circle.
Babcock's post-game interview called attention to the lack of offensive depth. Being outspoken about it, I bet that Holland addresses it. We need to keep Franzen, he's still good for 25 goals a season. But due to his streakiness we can no longer RELY on him to get us out of a hole. Ergo, sign another big name and relegate Franzen to awesome secondary scoring.
Also it's clear we need someone who goes to the net, carrying the puck, rather than dropping it back to a trailer who loses it to the other team.
If this is your last game in a Wings jersey, thank you for making literally 2/3rds of my life enjoyable from October to May almost every single year. An epitome of physical and mental clarity and consistency. If you do go, you will be greatly missed on the ice and in the locker room.
This was a really tough loss. I thought the Wings played very well, there were a few moments in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Wings have got to start scoring on there chances, that is the difference in this series. Still don't know on the 2nd goal why there were 3 guys chasing 1 guy it's happening way too often. And how did the ref miss a clear penalty shot for us, he was looking right at it in the crease, there is no excuses on that play what so ever. I will never count the Wings out and will be a Wings fan till I die. GO WINGS
Yea great points by Cherry. If the Wings don't make it to the finals, I'd like to see Pittsburgh and Vancouver play in the finals. Canada will see that their precious Crosby isn't a saint. Canadians will understand what Americans, and fans of American teams, are saying about him.
Haha WTF? You think because he doesnt play Canadian teams that often we don't hear about him or see him play? Trust me, the Pens don't need to be playing the Canucks for Sid to get exposure here in Canada. I hear what Americans, and fans of American teams are saying about him all the time and you all sound like babies bitching and complaining about a guy who dominates the league. Everybody on both sides of this argument needs to get over this. Yes, he ******* and complains to the refs - but the majority of hockey players do. We are spoiled in Detroit because we have a mature, experienced team, so we get really poopy when we see anyone whining. Crosby's antics are just amplified because everybody, even you haters LOVE to hear about him.
The fact that you guys are all agreeing with some of the biggest bone heads in hockey should tell you something. All Milbury has ever done is ruin the New York Islanders, hit some fan with his shoe, and push around some kid at a minor hockey game. Cherry? The guy is absolutely insane. And Torts? Talk about a guy who needs to STFU and just coach. Take some hints from Babcock on how to be a professional. Talk about a whiner.
And for the record, if the Pens and Nucks play in the final, everyone outside BC will be cheering for Pittsburgh. Vancouver is one of the most hated teams in Canada.
