Yes, on shorter term contracts though...if Franzen were on a 5 year deal, he'd be topping $8M a season for his (lack of) production. The only reason he is at $3.9M is because of the 11 years. If all those other guys were also on 11 year contract, they'd be in the $3M's as well. There is nothing valuable about Franzen's contract, because we are stuck with him for the next 7 years....
Lets look at James Neal, currently making $5M per season. Similar numbers, he's up and down has actually scored 40 before, but he averages in the mid 20's. He signed a 6yr $30M contract. Franzen singed an 11 year $43M contract...who has the better value, Franzen cost us $13M more...
Lets see what Franzen would be making if he had signed a 6yr deal....oh geez, $7.1M per season. Now what about Neal's $30M on an 11 year contract? $2.7M per. Again, there is no value to Franzen contract. Period. I'd rather have Neal at $30M tens times over Franzen at $43M...
So who is more valuable? Franzen's 28 goals at $7.1M on a 6 year deal or Neal's $5M on a 6 year deal? Franzen's $3.9M on an 11 year deal or Neal's $2.7M on an 11 year deal? Franzen's $43M or Neal's $30M? All three ways, Franzen is a waste of money...
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Franzen's cap hit for the amount of goals he scores..fans will always want more..the issue for the Mule is that after he went nuts in the playoffs 2 years in a row our expectations of him went through the roof. He's a 25-30 goal scorer and gets paid as such..he's never been a 40 goal scorer and never will be. The formula you used comparing him to other guys is so strange....although contracts are paid out over a certain amount years the true essence of a good contract is to get the most out of a guy on a per year basis which is why all these long contracts that were created with the loophole take huge dives in the last few years. Sign a guy for 10, hope he retires after 6 and if he doesn't hope he isn't in a wheel chair so you can get some value out of him.
Youre missing the point too. If goals are the only thing you do for the team, then 28 goals a year with 20 mins of ice time with world class centers is not all that great. If you hit, fight, scrap, and are a +25, then 28 goals is fantastic. Franzen needs to play like Shanahan. Not like Franzen.
Why would he ever play like Shanny? He was never compared to Shanny, he has never fought, never was a big hitter..I agree he should use his size more but you're making it sound like the guy should start doing things he was never supposed to or asked to do..makes 0 sense. I want a Shanny type player too but it's not going to be Franzen and good luck finding one.
but you said high end realistic cap numbers....there is nothing realistic about Nyquist getting $3M....high end realistic for Nyquist is $2M. None of those numbers are realistic high end or not... High end none of them top $2M, Brunner MIGHT get $3M.... not very realistic, but you didn't have to take your ball and go home...geez, man up.
Can you imagine if every time a member on this forum left because someone didnt like their point of view...There would only be like 2 people left here.

I want to see more physical 3rd and 4th lines and more skilled 1st and 2nd lines. Plus Kenny needs to realize that we have a lot of young players who are NHL ready. They need some icetime in Detroit to improve. In five years, when Z, Pav and probably Kronner are gone, we need some new stars.
Maybe Kenny can find a good right handed defender to fill the capspace a little bit.
Wow..where did Ericsson, Smith and Quincey go? They can't jsut disappear lol. With that D we would lose 70 games. Bert on the 1st line ? Andersson..where is he? I'm all for posting lineups and stuff but lets at least follow the guide lines of what an actual NHL roster would consist of.
I still just point my finger at Holland for not doing more to build this team up. I think these players, frustrating at times or not, did amazing considering the pieces in play. But I've been saying for ages now that it's stupid to not go for it when you still have Pavs and Z, and it was even stupider not to go for it when you had Lidstrom still too. You're going to be a good, competitive team every night still with Dats and Z in the lineup, and they've proven that this year if they've proven anything. I'm not saying we're one guy away from a Cup, but if we had a little more offense and a tighter D, I think we win this series. I'm not talking the need for stars either, though it'd certainly be nice. But to continually lose players and do nothing to make up for some of the loss just stings all the more right now. Like I've said literally for years now, if you're not going to blow up the team and really start rebuilding, do what you can to go for it. Sure, there are no guarantees, but it's brutally obvious that this team needs top-6 help at this point.
I hate to say it, really, I do, but I'm just saying, how do you think this series goes if Holland bites the bullet and gives up the 1st rounder for Jagr? In light of what they accomplished with this lineup, you have to wonder. I thought it was the right call at the time, and I think I still do, but you have to wonder right now. People always say that making moves is a gamble, but people rarely consider that not making moves is just as much of a gamble.
He didn't over spend a dime at the deadline and we were within one goal of making it to the conference finals against a team that I think we would've beat. Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.
This team is a dire need of TWO top 6 scorers....and someone to give Kronwall a blanket party to wake his ass up! Hello! You are the #1 guy here, PLAY LIKE IT!
on a side note, so glad I don't have to stop complaining about "The Choice"
I agree with all of those, Flip can stay if he wants to be the 3rd line center..we need to find a 2nd line center...I like Sammy and Bert but clearly Bert's back is a mess and at his age isn't going to get much better and Sammy just had a crap run of luck this year with injuries. Cleary is a warrior but just can't keep up for long periods of time..worked his ass of though. Franzen could get traded, its a pretty reasonable contract ..he's never going to play until the end of it so someone is going to only have to take that hit for 2-3 years. Need a top 6 guy and a top 6/9 guy. Cant wait to watch Gus play a full season next year.
Roller coaster of a season..tough way to go down..learned alot about our young guys..feel like we may just be a couple pieces away . Jimmy is top notch and love watching that guy. Signing off for a while..too hard to listen to the GMRWings types around here who complain about everything.. Have a good summer to the real fans out there.
We look really gassed..look like a team who worked so hard to win those 3 games and we have little left in the tank..good push at the end of the period..it's going to take a really gutsy 3rd to tie this thing up and win it. Jimmy has kept us in it..lets get 1.
