#2179167 Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

I'm not sure if the Wings need to look for a Rafalski replacement.

I think the Wings hope that Kronwall feels a little more urgency to step up as the new #2 offensive dman, takes another significant step forward and then his production will help fill some of the gap missing from Rafalski's offense.

In that sense, what they might look for is a dman to produce 38-43 points that Kronwall did as he was the #3 dman, which makes guys like Ehrhoff and Bieksa look like some really ideal options right now.

The official word is that he hasn't fully decided yet. Or hasn't made it official. The word on the street, however, is that he's done.

How many people in here are holding out on the slim chance that he won't retire?

It may not be the most popular opinion on here but you can count me as one who hopes that his body somehow magically re-strengthens itself for one more solid season.

So that's one. Anyone else?

"I've decided to take my talents to Detroit" doesn't really have the same ring to it.

"I'm going to take my talents to the Motor City." Hmm, nah.

"I'm going to take my talents to Motown." Hmm, that's more for a musician than an athlete.

"I'm going to take my talents to Hockeytown." Better.

I wouldn't be surprised if they employed Logan Pyett as their 7th defenseman. I can already see the "We hope he can provide a similar role that Derek Meech did for a couple years."

What would an argument about diving between Nucks and Sharks fans look like?

I mean, that would be a mighty fine episode of hypocrisy.

And those who can't teach, teach gym.

I've never heard that one before but now that I think back to my gym teachers it actually makes sense, haha.

I agree. We have to look no further than Wayne Gretzky to see that a great player isn't automatically a great coach. I can't see Holland hiring a coach with no previous experience.

Is it a coincidence that so few successful NHL head coaches were successful players?

"Those can't do, teach."

I remember Kronwall once mentioned how hard it can be for Nick Lidstrom to explain in words to other dmen teammates how he reads the play on the ice.

I think it would be great if the Wings found a coach that already has good familiarity and history of a good working relationship with Babs and MacLean. I'm not sure if such a candidate exists but that way everybody can be on the same page faster. Therefore, I hope Babs and MacLean have a loooot of input on the replacement.
