Number 2 is a big assumption by you and many others, people are trying to create the definitive narrative that Detroit passed over Chychrun in order to make this trade, there is no guarantee that Detroit ever wanted him and if they picked at 16 they very well could have picked someone else just like the 15 teams before them. If you are Detroit, and you are not planning on drafting Chychrun due to his injury history, what better move to make then to trade the pick to a team that does want him, add a second, and get rid of Datsyuk's contract.
Now, is that what happened? Who knows, only a hand fill of people could answer that question. But my point is you cant say that trade cost us Chychrun as we have no clue who they would have drafted at 16 had they picked.
I agree. If Detroit believed this guy was a franchise defenseman, they would never trade the pick away just to get rid of Datsyuk's contract. They had other offers on the table and other avenues they could have explored. My belief is they weren't high on Chychrun and used his hype to their advantage. Time will tell how good he is but I don't think he was as high on our draft board as other teams.
I think it's safe to say that if Chychrun didn't fall to us then this deal would have never happened. If we somehow possibly sign Stamkos, years from now we could be looking back at this night, where the league passing on Chychrun who may end up being a dud, saved the franchise.
If the only way to trade the contract is a prospect and 2nd rounder I hope we stand pat. I understand a player like Stamkos doesn't hit free agency often but let's be realistic about our chances to get him. First of all he could re-sign with Tampa. If he doesn't I think 12 mill is the price for him. No thanks on that. I'd rather keep Datsyuk's contract, struggle one year and end the stupid streak, get a high draft pick next year and go hard after free agents in 2017.
It's on McKenzie twitter account.
Flames will leave today with the goalie (Bishop) so imo Howard will stay in Detroit. We have so many useless contracts which are not tradeable...
And yet Holland is voted one of the top GM's in the league every year. He hasn't signed a player to a good contract in at least 6 years. It's evident when we have no trade pieces because all of our contracts are inflated.
I have a feeling Detroit will have a deal in place for Datsyuk's contract with a team dependent on getting a big fish free agent to sign with Detroit. So I don't see it being traded till July 1st or after. Holland knows if he trades away good pieces and then strikes out in free agency he will be looking for another job.
