Well than I'm rather wrong than delusional. Pens, Bolts, Habs, Blue Jackets, Rangers are clearly better. Flyers may be a toss up but their physicality gives them the edge.
Blue jackets I would say are pretty comparable. I've always thought the Habs were overrated and they rode a hot streak to the conference finals. The bolts always seem to follow up a good year with a sub-par year.
I think most of those teams are close enough to us skill-wise that either team could get the upper hand. I wouldn't call any team "clearly better than us" except boston
This obviously wasn't what anyone wanted coming into the offseason, but I think some people are overreacting. Every offseason, some teams get better and others get worse. Can you really say we got any worse? I would say we stayed almost exactly the same. The only guy we really lost was legwand and he only played for a couple months. There isn't really a spot for him anyway.
Overall, I would say the east got weaker. Boston got considerably worse, and I would argue that Pittsburgh and New York got worse as well. The only team in the east that I think got a lot better is Washington and does anyone think Washington can be any kind of threat anymore with no goalies and Ovi no longer caring about anything but goals?
Of course this could just be wishful thinking, but doesn't it seem like we're lined up to make a trade for a top 4 defenseman? We've been connected to several top guys (Myers, Yandle, Green(?), Edler(?)) through various rumors from credible sources. I won't call this offseason a failure until Holland at least has a chance to pull off a trade.
I think Detroit will be a borderline playoff team at worst. At best, they will enjoy a less injury-plagued season with Nyquist and the kids continuing to break out and with Mantha getting some playing time. I could see us potentially contending for the 1-2 spot in the Atlantic Division if we can avoid injuries (and aren't we due for some luck from the hockey gods on the injury front?)
I don't see how this is good for the wings. We have to wait until training camp conditioning to see if he can play? Meanwhile there's $9 million left to spend (after RFAs are signed) and we are in sore need of a couple key positions, Alfie is set to take half that, so there's only $4-5 million left on the table... Alfie is a good guy, he tried this season but it didn't work out. It's time to move on and make some long term moves to help this team rather then sign a guy with one foot in the old folks home that is only good for one season.
They'll sign Alfie and Cleary and there's only $3 million left. Meanwhile every team is wheeling and deeling and Holland is still convinced this no longer happens in the new NHL, that there are no more marquee players left...yet big names are all over the place.
Babs / Holland your time is up. Just resign Sammy, Bert, Cleary and Alfie and call it a day, it's obviously too dificult for your guys to get creative and bring in some fresh blood. I wish Mr. I was a few years younger...
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
I think blaming holland / babs for hypothetical situations that you made up in your head could be classified as insanity as well
Like who? Everyone acts like because we lost out on Parise and Suter, which was solely due to geography, that we somehow aren't a "destination" team. Name all these top free agents that Holland pursued that the Wings didn't get.
Weiss and Alfredsson were the top two UFA's last year and the Wings signed them both. Then before that every other team in the league was salivating over Danny DeKeyser. Who got him? Oh, yeah, that team no one wants to go to.
People seem to forget about the Dekeyser signing. I think that will turn out to be our biggest steal of the last 5-10 years
I would like Niskanen as long as the contract doesn't exceed $6.00M AAV
Oh for sure. Just trying to keep expectations in check when it comes to Sproul automatically being an improvement over Kindl and Lashoff is all lol. I have no doubt that will end up being the case. I just figure it may very well take some time.
Even if he isn't an instant improvement, at least he can move the puck and create offense. I don't think I have unrealistic expectations, but I understand the concern considering the mentality of other posters
