What I don't get is, Crawford got smoked last season, in the first round. And so, going into this season, everyone was all "Goaltending's a real question mark (because of what happened last season, in the first round)." And, about one game into the season, everyone decides, "Oh, hey, goaltending's not an issue. Phew." And, like, Kevin Weekes verbally fellating this team a few weeks ago, basically saying, "They've proven last season - the first round - was a fluke. They're going all the way this season, absolutely no question whatsoever." Which, ok, is maybe not so hard to understand. But, I dunno, where I come from, the regular season really doesn't mean anything. Nor does smoking the eighth-seeded Minnesota Wild (and their backup goalie, and their backup goalie's backup goalie) in th first round. ("Man, I really wasn't sure about these guys, but now that they've beaten the Wild in five games, I'm all in, baby.")
And then, y'know, that ridiculous Sports Illustrated thing...
Howard strings together 2-3 good seasons and lots of people say he hasn't proven himself enough, but one good season from Crawford and suddenly he's the guy who proved everyone wrong and is going to carry his team to the cup. I don't get it
this thread has now killed any legitimate attempt for rational fans to be displeased with smiths poor play.
roughly everyone that has been on smiths case lately does NOT want him traded. most people just want him sat so he can learn a lesson and stop hurting the team with boneheaded plays.
however, now everyone on the smith bandwagon will instantly turn to this thread and make the generalization that anyone that critiques smith is a moron.
let me say this though, he made at least half a dozen mistakes in these first 2 games that are worthy of a weeks worth of bag skates. scoring a goal from 10 feet away into a wide open net thanks to the strong play of linemates does NOT redeem someone from all those mistakes. additionally, smith has been bad in his own end all year .
many of you keep saying how absurd it is to rag on smith because hes a rookie. however you are all just as guilty of lumping anyone that is down on smith as the irrational reactionary type of fan when many of us have legitimate gripes about his play.
I don't think that's true, since not a single person has agreed with the OP.
I agree that smith hasn't played well, but he'll never be good in the playoffs if he isn't exposed to it. He improved a ton from game 1 to game 2, which is good. Babcock just needs to stick with him and he'll come around
Crawford is actually vastly underrated. Imo he's a top 3 goalie in the league, probably a top 5 goalie in the league of the past 20 years. Chicago's a decent team but without him they'd have a lottery pick this season. How he wasn't nominated for the Vezina AND Hart trophies is crazy.
I actually think Detroit could win this series if Chicago had a human being in net and not that space alien born on planet SHUTOUT.
I guess I'm the only one here who knows your post has an ulterior motive
That should cover it for the rest of the series
There's a reason the wings haven't loss consecutive games in a month. These guys have a lot of heart and a desire to win. I'm willing to chalk game 1 up to exhaustion after that gruelling 7 gamer against the Ducks. They obviously need to limit the turnovers and find a way to get Brendan smith to calm down. If they do those things and play with the heart and desire that they played with in the first round, I'm sure they'll win game 2
Statement game upcoming
When a goalie is below average for the first 2-3 years of his career and then suddenly becomes a stud behind the best offense and one of the best defenses in the league, that probably means he isn't actually as good as people think. If we have a big game against him early in the series, it could veer him off track for the series (see all 3 Chicago goalies in 09)
I think Detroit will stun the hawks and win one or even both of the first 2 games. Chicago will obviously regroup, but their first adversity of the year will be too much for them to overcome.
Wings in 6
How is Datsyuk the MVP? He played great but Zet or Howard would be clearly the MVPs.... Game 6 and 7 were elimination games and they both pulled through for that, that's how you earn MVP status by showing up on big games.
My opinion is so much better than your opinion! While I agree with you that Z was our MVP, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and It's not like Datsyuk wasn't one of our best players.
