#2519435 Peter Laviolette Hired as Predators' Coach

Posted by frankgrimes on 06 May 2014 - 02:13 PM

Wow talk about a 180 turnaround, Laviolette is the exact opposite of Trotz system. Nothing against your Preds but I don't think they have the personal to play his style also really bad for Rinne's stats.

something about the rangers and scoring..i bet you could put ovie on the NYR hed be a 20 goal scorer

Rangers just aren't built for playoff hockey and lack depth

As great as King and McDonagh are, Stepan has no winger and Nash so far has been a huge disappointment.
Game 4 sadly is now a highly recommended win for them.

I think at some point people will have to accept the new caphits thanks to the new CBA. The days of guys like Niskanen taking discounts to come here are gone, 5,5 annually is a bit of an overpayment for a top 4 guy yeah but at the end of the day you have to overpay to get the players you want. Niskanen would be a tremendous help and could give our blueline a much needed different look next season. I know people are thrilled with all the talent on the backend but at the end of the day we all know not all of them are gonna make it, so why not use only cash for Niskanen and use some of the higher upside prospects to get a big bodied forward ?

I hate how whenever a player is good in Pittsburgh, it is because of Crosby and Malkin. But guess what? Crosby and Malkin benefit from having great puck moving D to get the puck to them. People make it seem like the 2 of them do all the work, and a couple people just happen to touch the puck before they score. Not the case. Guess what? This team gets Niskanen, and our forwards that are on the ice with him will get more scoring chances than they have been.

I don't understand it either, yes those two are the two best players in the world but it's not like other sports where superstars don't need the team. It all starts with a transistioning game and Niskanen, Letang are very good at that this has almost nothing to do with the two superstars.

#2518245 Ken Holland Quotes (Apr 29th

Posted by frankgrimes on 29 April 2014 - 06:06 PM

Watch it here : https://www.youtube....q_ESOjzk#t=1110

So I'd take any quotes postet here with a grain of salt. He did say them but Kenny doesn't sound as if he already made up his mind about his moves in the offseason. How could he, our season is just over since a few days.

Seriously this is one - if not the best - end of season interview I've listened from him in a loooong time. Holland wanting to watch even more from Boston is a great thing, a lot of teams can learn a lot from that almost perfect team.

You can tell he is pissed but Holland really makes a lot of good points when it comes down to the development of our young guys fans and the media would absolutely label Mrazek a bust if he craps the bed for 10 games..Let the kids develop in the AHL and bring them up, when Blashill and Babcock are saying they are ready.  That was my biggest complaint with the Cleary signing the guy blocked a spot for Nyquist. The best example to me is Jake Gardiner, some Leaffans had NORRIS! threads about this kid two years ago and now they want to trade him, no need to put young 20 year olds - non exceptional players - through this kind of crap.

I also appreciate his honesty about Weiss, the guy has to hit the gym like crazy maybe even 5 - 6 times a week just to make up for that 18 months span and personally I really don't know what to expect from this guy anymore, so hopefully our FO will keep in touch with him over the summer.

It's true the Wings are starting to draft bigger and I absolutely love it but some bigger bodies are needed right now and they are available for cheap, tough fourth line guys are making around 750 - 1.000 k that's nothing compared to average NHL salaries.

Don't know but after listening to Babcock, Zetterberg and now even Holland I really believe them getting antsy could lead to a better future.

While I get what your saying, its also a wildly accepted practice to allow coaches/assistants, to interview for positions in other organizations that are better then their current one.

Basically yes but Blashill said he wants to coach another season in the AHL and the FO is happy with him. Conversations would then be like this:

other GM: Hello Mr. Holland can I please get your permission to talk to your AHL coach ?

Holland: Sure thing, number...

other GM: Hello Mr. Blashill you've done a great job in the AHL and paid your dues would you like to come up and sign with us ?

Blashill: Sorry, I like my job here and don't feel I'm ready.

other GM: but b....but

This way there is no grey area, Blashill can focus on his AHL job and other teams know he doesn't want to leave, so no reason for granting them permission. In the last years Detroit has been one of the teams, which always allowed others to talk to their FO stuff (McLellan, Yzerman, Nill, MacLean..). So it's not like the Wings are against it, Holland just sees no reason and it seems like Blashill wants to stay where he is so a no brainer.

That Babcock quote is exactly what I've been fearing for a long time. The guy - and who can blame him - may not want to go through some tough rebuilding years or just hope to make the playoffs. Maybe it's coincidence but him not being dedicated to talk extension this summer and other teams not getting permission to talk to Blashill doesn't exactly point a contract extension for the best coach in hockey :( but man I wouldn't wanzt to face a Babock coached team, he may go away from the game for 1 - 2 years and then decide to come back :(

as for Mule well it's going to be the last opportunity anyways  that combined with the Weiss deal could really hurt this franchise for a long time. With the way Franzen is going through the motions I really don't see him playing out his contract and then the recapture will kick in so this is a gamble I would not be willing to take.

Yeah buying out Tootoo who has one year remaining on his contract and provides at least some sort of protection for the GR is a great move.

In Mantha's case all I can hope for is that they don't rush him let him pay his dues in the AHL, bulk up even more and come up when he is fully ready not before it.

I honestly believe some people are really overestimating the "power" of us fans. Nothing we discuss here or somewhere else will have a direct impact on this organization, we have the luxury of acting like armchair-GMs positevly as well as negatively. That being said, I love the different viewings here on this board - compared to crap like HFboards where  mods/admins will ban you - if you don't agree with their viewpoint things are discussed in a very civil manner here. The best part of it all is the focus on purely one team with some nice guests and information about other teams such as the Preds fan.

Holland has done a marvelous job over the years nobody is denying that but I'm questioning if he has still the fire, drive to go with a changed landscape ? Nobody other than himself can answer this question, the league has changed teams have to bring a heavy, physical game alongside skill now more than ever. One thing I did see and learn in the series against Boston is this, not only do you need to be physical you also need a smooth transistioning from the D to the offense and a goalie who will bail you out more often than not, i.e a perfect built team i.e Boston this year. Yes, they like the Wings will have some tough decisions to make thanks to the CBA but their big advantage is the grind-thing, when your team isn't purely built on skilled it's easier to fill the grinders "blue collar" spots with cheaper players or lower draft picks. So personally I expect them to be very good for at least a few more years.

Don't get me wrong I like the way how some of the GR prospects are coming along but let's keep the expectations in check, nobody not even Babock thought Nyquist would be that ready so he surprised almost everyone in the organization. That being said his scoring pace was stamkoslike and I really hope people aren't going to expect that from him every season, if this guy can become a solid 20 - 25 goalscorer annually I would be extremely happy the same goes for Tatar. Another factor are the opponents, at first new players aren't seen as dangerous - unless of course you are a top 10 or whatever pick - as time goes on tthe opponents are more aware of certain players and play them harder, more focused or ice their best lines, pairings against certain players. At this point the new players has to adopt and that's also the point, where they define their own road.

I did a quick look at the upcoming UFA pool and boy oh boy does that look like one meh class, NO star defenseman available and not one star winger that's just ridiculous. Nothing against guys like Niskanen - would love him here - but if he is by far the best available defenseman that's really telling. But the difference between this summer and some others is this:

The coach, captain are getting antsy of just squeezing into the playoffs and I'm sure if you ask them both would rather end the streak and if it means winning cup th next or following year. I still rank Holland in the top 5 in terms of GMs but - like everyone else - he has made some mistakes and seems to be panicking more often than not (Quincey, Legwand, Kindl...) so this is also his summer to show the fans and everyone in the league that he is still the top guy or at least on pair with guys like Chiarelli, Lombardi, Poile and Shero. Bringing back Alfie would be a mistake in my mind, he doesn't add anything if you don't play him on one of the top two lines but the thing is, even Abdelkader produced as Pasha's wing that's how good the two euro twins are but expecting a 41 years old Alfredsson to carry a line might be too much to ask. If the Wings would be looking for leadership and some veteran depth adding to an already stacked roster sure re-sign him but the Wings are retooling/building on the fly so I'd rather see him having a great last year in Ottawa and get his number deservingly retired there.

The needs are clear:

- size, grit --> easy to acquire and not expensive so there is absolutely no excuse to not sign guys like McGrattan, Orr for a fourth line role

- defense --> I cringe at the idea of signing Boyle rather have Niskanen but if we lose out on him I really don#t know who else would be a helpful edition :(

- pure goalscorer --> many will disagree but I'd rather have Moulson (cheaper almost same production) than Vanek

tl;dr - the off-season will be interesting and Kenny has a lot of capspace to play with

I'm so disappointed they've lost AND had an opportunity to goon it up the season is over why not do it against the wannabe tough Hawks, damnit.

If I am Hitchcock and it's still 3:1 with 7 minutes to go

I'd be doing the following: timeout and form a line of Jackman, Reaves, Sobotka and Backes tell them "FRESH MEAT TIME"

destroy them physically now GO BLUES

f*** it it's go Sharks or Kings in the West now
