#2484218 Official 2014 Olympic Hockey Thread (Admin warning #316)

The Blues are my team in the West again, so many likeable players and they have built this team without tanking AND on a small internal budget, so that's extremely impressive.

Their loyal fans deserve a winner and it would be good for the whole city, if the Blues could bring in a cup.

Backes is just a mean SOB and I love the way he plays

my point is, if he opted not to play in the olympics THIS year, he would have been able to get some much needed/desered rest for a couple weeks, before the nhl resumed playing games

Z is a true warrior, has national pride and so he played through it. I don't care that much about the NHL season, he had the chance to captain his country at the olympics that's a once in a lifetime moment for players.

If I had to take something away from the Z or Pasha situation, it would be this: I have even more respect for them now, they are putting their teammates, countries over themselves and basically are playing through everything. We are so lucky, to have these two guys and I'm incredible proud to have such great player in a winged wheel.

There are more important things in life than hanging on to a very impressive playoff streak. If I had to choose between both of them captaining their respective teams OR making the playoffs I'd go with the first choice because they've given so much to this franchise, time to give them something back.

Also I don't care what the doctors are seeing both are superb trained athletes we are going to see them again in the olympics book it :)

#2483532 NHL players will not participate in 2018 Olympics (Mod Post #99)

Posted by frankgrimes on 12 February 2014 - 09:16 PM

This is just another ridiculous idea by the NHL.

Most european hockeyfans are like me:

We love watching the best players in the world (NHL) but other than that, we don't care about international competition (safe vor Olympics obviously) and are pretty happy with our "lower" domestic leagues. (NLA, SEL und FEL aren't that bad mind you :) ). As long as we can see a lot of homegrown talents, local heroes coupled with few but very good foreigners giving their all, we are happy :)

So if the NHL îs trying to pull something like this off, it would be a disaster. Maybe the NHL should learn a thing or two from the KHL, they thought they could compete with the NHL and tried to get other clubs to join them, well most teams and fans aren't interested in them nor the competition against the NHL..the only way the KHL has is to force other teams into their league, this can be compared to a hostile takeover.

As others have mentioned, the corporate system is totally different you have sponsors plaguing the jerseys and not just one/two owners who are paying for everything, the player freedom is also completely different - in my honest opinion this would NEVER work.

Another point I wanted to make is this, the league can't even sustain 30 teams and now they want to create even more? That's ridiculous the league should shrink not grow. Sometimes I'm wondering if those running tthe NHL are honestly so out of touch with reality, that they are seeing $$$$ 24 / 7 and nothing else, disgusting.

Guess what NHL ? The players if they want to will go anyways but after seeing the conditions in Sochi I'm not surprised if some would pull out of that. Add to the that the ridiculous time difference (games at 6am anyone?!). Multi billonaires can't stand a standstill for two weeks unbelievable how greedy some of them are, must be a pleasure to work for them in normal life...

Can't wait till players are asking for olympic clauses *g*

Ah Matt Greene. He's like a bigger, RH shooting Mark Stuart.  Also he's from Michigan....I like it.

Same here the guy is rugged and a good ol' Michigan boy on top of that he shouldn't cost too much

Great player and he is learning from one of the best. Blashill is doing a superb job with the GR and getting them ready for the big club, kudos.

#2482235 Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Posted by frankgrimes on 07 February 2014 - 01:51 AM

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Gillis and Holland had very loosely agreed on three pieces, and then Gillis bumped it up to four, and that killed the deal. If so...slightly weird, maybe.

That's the way how MG is doing his deals and then wonders, why nobody bites. They've had a deal in place for Luongo and then he upped the price again and fall short.

I'd like Edler but not for the asking price of a 1 st + A level prospect + rather sign a physical guy like AMac, he can fill the shutdown role nicely and would give us a much better second pairing without costing draft picks or prospects.

#2481479 NHL may rethink Sochi

Posted by frankgrimes on 05 February 2014 - 02:37 PM

We are talking about basic things here and if they can't even get that right than oh my. I'm starting to think this might be a tactic in order to give the russian athletes an edge. What are the other people supposed to do buy Smirnoff 24/7 instead of water and not using the shower ? Yeah the most expensive olympics ever can't even get basic things right and no, this is not an overreaction people around the world are worried about the health and safety of their national representors = athletes!

In all seriousness though, water = NO brainer same should go for electricity, elevators. If I were a journalist I'd tell my boss this isn't acceptable screw you guys I'm going home!

The bed complaints are ridiculous. Are they supposed to build five star hotels for temporary guests? It makes sense for the athletes to live in dorms. No biggie. Western world problems.

Are they supposed to ? No, but seriously the pictures, water quality and below average standard and we are talking about the best players in the world here they aren't used to that kind of stuff. If a city can't even offer good quality on top of spending 50 million $ they shouldn't get the games period.

The only thing players should have to worry is the competition and nothing else but in Sochi they have a lot of stuff to worry about: attacks, supbar quality of life, safety and water which isn't even drinkable...thats bad standards no matter how you look at it, pathetic.

I read something on bleacher report where you can't flush toilet paper, theres no heat, the waters not suitable for your face and is yellow If its working at all, and they're killing hundreds of wild dogs.
Ha.
It seems like a third world country.

The ioc should be ashamed and held responsible for that disaster.

Instead of talking about the prejoy, we have to read things from Muslims planning attacks, dogs getting killed, people there losing homes and of course bad quality of life.

Worst Olympic decision ever made be proud you ioc f***ers

Huge win so happy for the monster. Sweden is set in goal now with Lundquist and Monster playing great.

Hamhuis would look nice in Red and White but the price maybe to steep :(

#2480655 What's wrong with Pasha? (Mod warning post #57)

Posted by frankgrimes on 03 February 2014 - 05:18 PM

I just want him to get well soon and even if he is holding back in order to  be ready for the olympics so what?

The guy has given fans and especially this organization so much joy, he now has a once in a lifetime opportunity = captain your national hockeyteam in the olympics in your fatherland !

All I know is, I will enjoy watching him showing off his magic on the big ice. All the best Pasha

Broken Record Statement: Without another top line defensemen ( I really believe we need 2 so we can bench Quincey and Kindl) we have no chance.

We've known that since Lidströms retirement, also losing Rafalski seems to hurt more than we thought :(

Put in Monster. Keep abby off the top line, and wake up!!!

Babcock could put in Kingquist back there and the outcome wouldn't that much different, the defense is a huge mess. That's what happens when you can't even ice two good pairings :(
