#2542033 10/17 GDT : Red Wings 4 at Maple Leafs 1

Were there any changes in the lines tonight? Daily Face-off reported a change in the Defensive pairings.

Smith krone all
Dekeyser Quincey
Kindl e

Is how they started but it changed a bit

Smith has been great this year. Very solid. Can't wait till he starts showing up on the scoresheet.

Completely agree. But have to take it a step farther. All the kids have really played well.

Its says a lot about a reactionary topic when degraa55 is the voice of reason.

Yes it's great being a realist and using facts.

Fact is it's three games into an 82 game season and our best player is out!

With almost no one around the lower bowl would give you a crazy good view.

Ehh maybe. But I'm stubborn and OCD I don't like looking through the glass.

I have been to aeros games here in Houston on a week night with more fans in the seats than that.
The NHL needs to move these guys, this is just sad to see.

That's crazy weekday griffins games average like 1000 you can sit anywhere you want.

I gotta ask the obvious why are there people sitting way up in the stands if there is no one in front of them?

Better view? I'll personally never sit in the lower bowl. I prefer frot row of the upper bowl right on center ice. You get the best view there IMO.

I think the "ineffectiveness" of Holland signing free agents is greatly exaggerated. People have very short memories, its as if Weiss and Alfie never came here. Weiss being injured last year some how dismisses the he came here in the eyes of some. In the case of Alfie, he left a team he played on for almost 2 decades and turned down a reported offer from the Bruins to come here. But since he is older, again, people dismiss it, regardless of the outcomes, they were top UFA's 15months ago, and we got them.
Losing out on Boyle (wanted to play with St. Louis), Erhoff (lost out on to an elite team), Nitkansen (Wsh offered more $$/stupid contract and he had ties), and Suter (wanted to be closer to his family) does not mean we are horrible at signing free agents. Its a different NHL in 2014, and when a top UFA becomes available, its not simply a handful of teams that are trying to sign him, you are competing against potentially 29 other teams. Once you take into consideration that the free agent pools now a days are generally weak and that lately where a player signs seems to be coming down the city that the player has personal ties in its extremely hard to sign big time free agents. I'm not saying the Wings couldn't do better, but to imply that Holland is weak in this area I believe is an overreaction.
Criticizing the Weiss signing is very unfair, Holland had no way of predicting the groin injury as he had no major prior history. His only major injury was a broken wrist which should not follow someone once its fully healed.
Also, one point people have a tendency of overlooking when it comes to Holland/Free agents, is the amount of free agents he retains. The guys rarely loses superstars not named Hossa. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Lidstrom etc. all had a chance to walk, but instead resigned. You have to remember, every time a team gains in free agency, another team loses, and while Detroit has not necessarily been gaining a ton lately, they have not been losing either. I am also glad Holland is not making crippling moves in free agency like a lot of teams out there. Some of the contracts being given out are absolutely terrible.
Other then the Quincey signing, and Cleary promise last year (which isn't that bad given his 2012 playoffs), I think Holland has done a fine job overall in the past few years in regards to free agents.

Because Weiss has done so much for us.

Also wasn't it Ottawa that cut ties? Thought they told Alfie they didn't have the money to resign him.

The point is when is the last time the wings targeted a big name free agent and they did great things here? Most of our targets want nothing to do with us. Weiss hasn't done anything and idk if e had offered from other teams or not. Alfie made a piss poor decision in choosing us over one other team which actually was competing for a cup in te bruins.

No one is taking away from the luck and skill we have in drafting players. But free agency and trades have been Hollands negative for awhile now.

I think Kronwall being stronger on his skates isn't the issue, any other time in the game Getzlaf gets called for hooking. It's typical NHL reffing inconsistency late in the 3rd period. One thing that drives me crazy about hockey is how much the officiating effects the outcome of the game. It's not like that in Baseball and Football. I wish it was something the NHL would address. The players should have the biggest effect on the outcome of a game, instead of the refs.

And at the end of the end of the day the players did affect that outcome. Read the thread people have said everything that went wrong numerous times. A missed call was only one of many things. If any of kronwall Ericsson Howard and Franzen did something different things code been different regardless of a missed call.

But it's one game. Why are people so hung up on one game? It's an 82 game season and whether people like it or not. Calls will go our way as well as against us. And over 82 games it's usually balanced out.

#2540380 Coach's video challenge

Posted by DeGraa55 on 12 October 2014 - 08:44 PM

I voted undecided because I think goals should be reviewable in certain situations. Only certain penalties should be reviewable, and what happened against ANA isn't one of them.
Delay of game (puck over glass or trapezoid infraction).
Too many men
Goaltender interference (and it would still be ref discretion)
Diving (only to reverse it from tripping and only penalize the diver, eg Thornton going down like he was shot by Franzen)
That's it. Penalties like spearing, high-sticking, hooking, tripping and all of those would not be reviewable unless it's for a penalty shot.
Also, a failed review would cost the timeout. A successful would obviously either result in a goal/no goal or the penalty being upheld or called. If the timeout has already been used, 2 min delay of game. Another failed review would result in a 4 min delay of game (2+2 like a blood penalty), another would be a 5 min DOG and a coach ejection, then assistant coach and so on and so on.

I agree with a version of this

I got all caught up in the non-call, but in the replay Ericsson's blunder is the worst. He just stands there, and at the VERY end makes a slight effort to start skating... then kind of stops again. He easily could have gotten in there and prevented a decent shot if he just took a couple steps forward. He wasn't even in position to protect a pass really. Not sure what he was doing out there.

I completely agree. Just a whole series of blunders there :(. But 80 games to go. They look good through two games!

As much as I like Babcock, and I do think he's a great coach, but I think atleast half dozen coaches would've won the Cup w/ that '08 team, and his Golds with those Canadian teams.

Holland hoarding his assets again with Babs and Blashy.

It's a tough call: The only way to ensure a smooth transition is to let Babcock go and send a moving truck down I-96 to pick up Blashill's things and bring 'em east.

If Babcock gets a 2 yr extension, then we risk losing Blashy ( his term will be up by then, too) and then what? The chances that one of the good coaches we'd like would actually be available is pretty darn slim.

Be cool, say five years from now, to have Blashill behind the bench, Yzerman calling the shots, Holland way up high in the office (doing lots of interviews) w/ Nosek, Larkin, Sheahan, Glenny down the middle, Mantha, Nyquist, Tatar, Pulks, Cleary, Jurco...our futures so bright, we gotta wear shades!

Was cleary a typo?

No surprise at all. People are upset about a few fourth liners on a team with 274 of them?

#2537793 Are the wings underrated?

Posted by DeGraa55 on 29 September 2014 - 11:28 PM

How can anyone say the wings are underrated? Lol

They have lots of UNPROVEN talent.

They had lots of injury prone talent.

They have several over the hill guys.

In fact I think it's pretty clear what the wings are. And if by some miracle they stay healthy and all live up to their hype this team would be a pleasant surprise. But after these last few seasons it's extremely foolish to think that'll happen.

Yup, Athanasiou looks unreal. I hope Blashill plays him and Mantha together all year in Grand Rapids.
Once again, extremely happy Holland doesn't have the quick trigger finger that a lot of LGWers have. A lot of people on here were ready to trade this kid just a few short months ago. I said it back then and I'll say it again now, this kid is a keeper for sure.

Yes he is the next Crosby for sure...

#2536406 Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

Posted by DeGraa55 on 17 September 2014 - 09:10 AM

great news! No doubt his hands were tied being an RFA, hopefully he proves his underpayment and gets that pay day next time. Although I could be wrong, but I think he still may be an RFA after this contract too...
anyhow, in two years time with Q gone, I look forward to:
Kronwall - Smith
Dekeyser - Sproul
Ouellet - Marchenko
I know K and E may still be signed, but we cannot hinder the kids...
Geez, in  two years defensemen Jensen, Backman AND Nedomlel will ALL be out of exemptions as well! Gonna be a log jam in a couple of seasons...

First of all a logjam of good talent is never a bad thing it's the logjam caused by guys like cleary that are the problem. Second I'm a realist and there's literally 100% no way all of those young guys will make impacts in the team. I believe in sproul and oullete the most a bit in marchenko and very in little in the rest.
