#2493188 Who will have a better career as a Red Wing: Weiss or Legwand?

Posted by Andy Pred 48 on 08 March 2014 - 02:21 PM

Datsyuk, Legwand, Weiss and Helm when all are fit and fully tuned into the systems, thats one hellavu Center line up not many teams will match.

I hope they both have good stints as Wings, and yes i do believe Legwand will re-sign on a 2 year deal. I for one am really excited to see next season's Wings roster come together, add another scoring winger ( or just go with Mantha? ) and a top D ( trade for one ) we could be back up where we belong.

Eaves really is the man. Never disliked him. For his price tag he did his job very well.

#2493923 UFA/RFA Re-Signing, What Does Everyone Get?

Posted by larionov_8 on 09 March 2014 - 04:09 PM

Not to get off topic, as this has an influence on who makes what, but I think this year's experience demonstrates that the wisest course of action would have Jurco and Glendening start the year in GR. There will be injuries, and when there are, I'd rather see these guys, who have shown they are capable, fill a role, over a player who may not be ready. Meanwhile they can play big minutes and continue to learn how to win with GR.

Given that we have enough youth already (Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan and Andersson, plus potentially Ferraro and Callahan - Helm and Abby aren't "old" and there are 3 young guys on the D too), there is value in filling out the roster with veterans who can also fill some roles (e.g. Legwand and Alfie). That gives us the kind of depth needed to compete in this league when those injuries hit. I think this stretch of games right now is showing that it is a lot to ask of these young guys to drive the bus themselves. Hopefully they will be ready to take on bigger roles as they develop but they are still young and raw in some ways.

On a less argumentative note, can anyone explain why Almquist is / is not waiver-exempt in 2014-15?

Hard to score when you're playing with Glendening and Abdelkader

Alfredsson moved his whole family to Detroit. If he wasn't serious about staying, the family could have lived in Ottawa. I think he'll play another year or two, and he should. He's been great.

#2493392 Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

The Wings desperately needed a center, Holland went out and got the best one available for this team.  We don't know if he had to add Jarnkrok or that 3rd rounder because some other team also made an offer and that was what it took to make the trade.  What's done is done and now this team has a fighting chance to make the playoffs.  I just hope Legwand re-signs after this season because that would give this team incredible center depth when healthy.

I just took a look at the last two goals Pulkkinen scored. Those are unbelievable shots. We saved ourselves a better player in this trade.

Your really telling me alfy can't go now too?? Man oh man this team is hurting. I'm really starting to question the whole training staff. I find it hard to believe a premier nhl player can't get good dental work and be ready for a game. It's not an injury he lost a few teeth

Dear Mr Legwand

Welcome to Detroit.

I cant speak for all of us but I am very happy you waived your no trade to join the Red Wings. Some people here may not understand how much we need you. With four of our regular centers injured you have some big skates to fill. As a Veteran of many years you should be able to jump right in there. Maybe more so than some young high flying European.

I think you will do very well here, your brand of hockey that you have played for 15 years should fit with exactly what we will need to do to win games to get us in the playoffs. It may not be pretty but I'm sure Mike Babcock has a plan to shut down the opposition rather than outgun them.

You may not be the defence man we thought we were all going to get this trade deadline, but a 2 way speedy center in my mind is the closest and next best thing. Your defensive skills I'm sure will be relied on to keep the puck out of our net in the dying seconds of the game something we have watched our red wings have much trouble with this year.

As much as Patty Eaves, and Jarnkrok will be missed, I would at least like to welcome you as a fan to a player of the Red Wings.

Welcome aboard, Stay Healthy, have a fun run.

Shoe

#2489102 Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Posted by Hockey13Playa on 04 March 2014 - 12:51 PM

Almquist 2 nhl games ... 1 goal .... So far so good

If anything I think he would really help our 2nd ppl unit

Fabian Brunnstrom, 1 game - 3 goals.

We all know what happened from there.

They had the same issue last year and went all in on forwards.

100% true.  I guess I was just thinking that if he's half the "genius" GM everyone proclaims him to be he'd have learned from that mistake.  Maybe not though.

Edit:  I decided to check the numbers and they've got the 9th best goals against in the league so I guess they're not as bad as I thought.  You'd still think they'd be looking to replace Letang though.

I wonder if Shero is really willing to sell the farm for Kesler or if he's just trying to scare away potential suitors/drive up the price for rivals.  I mean, I can certainly imagine him going nuts and trading half of his farm club for an elite player...but wouldn't it make more sense for that player to be a defenseman than a forward...ya know, because their defense is laughable?

If that's the asking price, I'd be strongly compelled to take it.  Only thing is, if we lose Helm for another Center, while we upgrade the position we don't solve our current dilemma of not having enough good centers healthy.

I agree with Holland about no rentals, but he should absolutely be aggressive about anyone else.  I'd part with picks easily, since the draft will be weak and the Wings will finish somewhere in the middle of the pack.  We have a lot of prospects, so if one of them gets us a legit top 6 or top 4 guy right now, you do it.

The injuries to Datsyuk and Z only make it more imperative that we make a move, not less.  Even with everyone healthy, the team still needs changes and additions.  So make them now, since there are some legitimately good choices available.  This year's deadline is better than previous ones because there are actually good players available, so don't wait for the off-season to upgrade somewhere.

And as for Cammalleri, he may be small, but he gets to the dirty areas, doesn't he? And he snipes.  I think he's like Tatar. Small but he plays big.

Well you basically make my point the odds of us winning in the playoffs with Hank coming off back surgery and dats knee, who knows what'll be of it, hopefully it can heal with rest. Are slim... I don't think and not saying we should throw the season, I'm saying trading away some our prospects for a 2nd line center/wing (i.e kesler) would be a waste for the future, they wouldnt be able to carry our team to the playoffs with all the lack of chemistry and so little time (I think like 20 games)
I don't see what ya see in kesler

I'm not big on Kesler. But we're talking about maybe a first-round pick, a prospect, and a 3C for a very good 2C who could hold his own as a 1C or be one of our better RWers. Given our situation, I think that makes a lot of sense. The argument could be made that even with a fully healthy lineup we should be thinking about adding a top-six centerman sometime soon. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are getting old and breaking down. It's sad but it's true. Weiss is a huge question mark, short-term and long-term. Helm, Sheahan, Andersson, Glendening are bottom-sixers. Franzen doesn't like playing center. Jarnkrok is the only Griffin who projects as a top-six center in the NHL, and he's still got a long way to go.

This isn't random third line center were talking about. It's Darren Helm. One of the fastest and most defensively responsible centers in the game. Liked and respected by teammates. Liked and respected by management and the coaches. Loved by fan base. He IS our bottom 6. He won't be traded just like Draper was never traded. Expendable? IMO he's one of our bright spots...
