Why didn't Filppula need an adjustment period going to Tampa?

Because they didn't ask him to learn a completely different system.

I won't be posting tonight, I'll be at the game and since I live on the other side of the border I can't post from my phone but I better get my butt pat still as I will be participating in the live action Dan Cleary drinking game

#2447858 Missing Homer

Posted by Euro_Twins on 26 October 2013 - 06:00 AM

And we're missing the best defenseman of a generation like Lidstrom, and we're missing a power forward like Shanahan, and we're missing a big tough defenseman like Konstantinov, and we're missing a point man on the PP like Rafalski and we're missing PK's like Draper and Maltby, and we're missing a sniper like Hull and we're missing a tough guy with offensive skills like McCarty and we miss the playmaking skills of Larionov and on and on and on.  With the possible exception of Datsyuk and Zetterberg, who from the past wouldn't you rather have than anyone on the current team?

No, I think you forgot how often Fil gave up... He was often one of the few Wings to show up almost every night.

Is this a joke? When he didn't play with Zetterberg he was a ghost out there.

#2447796 What's Killing Our Offense?

Some of this was to be expected. Like I asked earlier, when was the last time we developed a star forward? But to answer that, what is the definition of "star"? A 40 point per year or 50 point per year guy is not a star to me. I look at "stars" as 60+ point guys with 30+ goals per year. We haven't developed one of those in 15 years now. I don't see one coming soon either. maybe mantha (I believe he will be) but he is also 2+ years away from making the Wings and will need a season or 2 to blossom then.
So if we haven't been developing star players internally, have we been trading for them or signing them as UFA's? no. All of which brings us back to where we are today. yes all GM's make mistakes when deciding which players to keep vs let walk. Franzen over Hossa was a big one. yes it was 5 years ago and there has been ample time to make up for that error. yes we missed on parise and in another year or 2 we will be glad we did. maybe. fact is star players make star player money. We don't seem to be willing to spend it. last year was a good example of this. We signed 3 role players for 6 million per year. How has that worked out? Sammy-wish he was gone, brunner-bailed on us after 1 season, and tootoo-likeable guy but doesn't offer much. This past off season we could have traded for a proven 30+ goal scorer-Ryan, but we decided not to. even though he is young, RHed, signed for another year after this one and costs less per year than Cleary, Alfie, Tatar, and Nyquist combined. Not to mention he is out scoring all 4 this year. next summer we have a ton of money coming off the cap. anyone care to make a wager on if we sign Vanek or someone like that? it will cost 8 million per year to do it, so I bet we pass.
Now some on here are hoping and begging for tatar, nyquist, and helm to get back, and expect that to fix our offense. Sorry but it will not. tatar and nyquist are more of the same. Speedy guys yes. Puck movers yes. but these are not guys that are going to drive through the Dman and burry the puck in the net on a regular basis. it will be more of the same. Skate around and shoot the puck from 30+ feet away. maybe I should write 10 meters.... helm is not an offensive player. Awesome defensive forward yes, but he is not a goal scorer. None of these three are going to stand in the crease or block out the G and pick up the rebounds, which is a big part of our problem. yes we were spoiled having Homer all of those years. One of the best front of the net guys ever. No one guy is going to do what he did. But that doesn't mean we don't try to find those guys. The issue is, most of the guys that do that also drop the gloves from time to time, and that is something that the brain trust refuses to acquire.

You do know we developed Datsyuk and z right?

Also Tatar does drive the net, and he is gritty. Him and goose are very different

I expected a little more offense from Smith and Kindl, who both have combined for 2 points in 18 games. Or I should say Kindl has both points, Smith has zero. Smith has looked better recently with his scoring chances though, I'll admit.

He's been a -5 since returning to the lineup, he is currently a -9. I know +/- isn't everything but that is quite a terrible number to accumulate in 7 games. I think smith is a weak link as is Sammy and Cleary, bring up nyquist ouellet, and a healthy helm and this team changes entirely

per khan

ultrasound showed fluid but no tear. Will not play saturday, but will likely travel with team on west Canada trip

Potentially good news. Would be so much better if his first game is in detroit the whole crowd will go mental.

Holy balls, somewhere Sammy is laughing at us while holding Ericsson and helm voodoo dolls.

#2447115 Ericsson out 2-3 weeks

Posted by Euro_Twins on 22 October 2013 - 06:09 PM

(And here I was just saying that pairing DeKeyser with a good offensive defenseman might be magical.)

On the bright side (if you can call it that)...I haven't been overly impressed with Ericsson thus far. He's steady, reliable, a great veteran presence (especially on the PK), but he still makes his fair share of mistakes. And I dunno if we're really gonna miss his size all that much.

The Hockey Gods are doing all they can to earn DeKeyser a promotion. Maybe he really impresses on the top pairing and Ericsson returns a second-pairing guy. That might be good for our depth.

I'm reaching, I know.

Is this a joke?

Big Rig is second on the team in hits (30th among dmen), 5th in +/-, 5th in shot blocking, and he has been using his size a lot more...

#2446779 Ouellet Debut Tonight

Posted by Euro_Twins on 21 October 2013 - 07:05 PM

I don't really understand why Ouellet has seen action in the preseason as well as tonight while Sproul and Almquist haven't.

Almquist has put his time in to at least warrant a look while Sproul is probably more of what we need in a defenceman.

Maybe they're showcasing him for a trade...I know, I know, probably not a popular idea.

For the record I like Ouellet but you've got to give up something to get something.

Almquist is not good defensively, Ouellet is
