#2524675 Compliance buyout expected to be used on Tootoo

Posted by Wheelchairsuperhero on 19 June 2014 - 07:15 PM

Well - when we need the Mule to step it up - he usually doesn't.
Many will point towards his point production, and his cap value ratio - however he's still getting paid $5 million plus thru the 2015/2016 season...I'm all for using him as part of a package deal.

Like I said I've got mixed feelings about him, and it usually comes down to how I'm conflicted about his contract and how effective he'll be near the end of it. I just don't by into the argument that when he actually does produce, and in bunches, it's meaningless. He definitely didn't step up in the playoffs when we really needed him (though to be fair I'd say no one really did). But his hot streaks can and have turned the tide of some games. Just call me confused about this whole "he only scores during blowouts" thing until I see the numbers that indicate that.

Ps. Sorry that's my last post on Franzen in this thread, realized I've deviated from the topic. And on the topic I'm alright with the Tootoo buyout since a compliance buyout can't be used for Kindl.

#2524635 Detroit re-signs Gustavsson 1 yr $1.85 mill

This is perfect IMO. When his inevitable injuries occur Mrazek will get the call and get some more nhl experience, but will still get a lot more time playing with the Griffins. Win win. I would've been a little bummed if it was anything more than 1 year but I think this is ideal.

The issue with Franzen is that his points tend to come in bunches and tend to be in games where they are next to meaningless. If he scored a hat trick in a 7-1 game that makes his stats look great, but does that get Detroit any closer to being relevant? Tootoo should be bought out, Cola shouldn't have been, as he, when he wasn't injured was better than Kindl and Lashoff, and when he was injured he didn't count against the cap anyway.

I keep seeing that argument against Franzen about him being hot in meaningless moments, but I'm not sure where it came from. I remember thinking last season when he was red hot "thank god Franzen is scoring". I don't have the numbers to back this statement up but I remember having the thought that his hot streak last season was clutch. Then when he slowed down Nyquist rocketed forward. My point is I just don't know of "he scores in meaningless situations" really has any validity. If someone has the numbers that say otherwise that's cool, I'll accept that. My feelings on Franzen are mixed, I'm definitely not trying to blindly defend him.

Here's Nyquists WC goal against Denmark.

Who's this Goostof Newquist cat? He's pretty good.

#2516173 ECQF - Game 5 - Red Wings at Bruins - 3:00 PM EST

Not happy, I liked Burt last game.

Kindl on the other hand can suck it. This move should have been done months ago, not down 3-1. Just like always the Wings have a delayed reaction.

I like Bert over Alfie at this point. I doubt whatever Alfie's problem was (I'm assuming injury) is fixed yet.
And also, I still have faith! Let's go wings!

Smith has looked great. Gustavsson was great.
The beard looked great. Kindl is an absolute detriment. That is all, I'm going to go sob quietly in the other room now.

For f***'s sake. I'm a Bert fan but come on. "We need to not play into their game and use our speed" by putting in molasses incarnate? Bert isn't our PP woes answer, especially if we count on him for those give and go entries.

Here's hoping, because the Wings definitely look like a team without a Captain.
Yes please.

These lines for sure. Really want Jurco back on the kid line and Legwand playing more.

Nothing about the coaching makes any sense. The Wings keep running the same play over and over, and are shocked its not successful. From line selection to playing time, to running actual plays; the coaching staff is really dropping the ball here. The staff deserves plenty of blame, but the main reason we look so bad out there is because the effort is lacking. We've got half the team just standing around digging in their noses, while the other half- I genuinely don't know what the other half is doing.
We're losing every 50/50 puck, because we're playing soft. Way too many fly by's on the forecheck, and way to many give-a-ways on the backcheck.

This too. I was excited because I thought they came out with some jump today, though admittedly I thought that for game 2 also. But then they quickly stop looking hungry.

#2512974 Howard = Average

Then prepare to lose.
When was the last time a team won the cup by having their goalie steal 16 games? If Hasek, Brodeur, and Roy didn't steal every game (or even every win), you can be reasonable sure that Howard won't either.
The problem here is that someone could just as easily rewrite that post by saying "This isn't the Wings of '02 . . . they don't have a Dominic Hasek in his prime. They can't afford to be scoring one goal per game, frittering away their power plays. The decision to accept lack of talent among 18 skaters but not the 19th is just baffling to me. It's completely and utterly arbitrary.
Focusing on Howard just strikes me as lazy. It's easier to point fingers at one guy than at 18.
Yes, having your goalie give up an early goal can have some vague effect on morale which can alter the course of the game.
You know what else can have a vague effect on morale which can alter the course of the game? Not waiting until 30 minutes in to get on the board. Jumping on the opponent and making them second-guess themselves has that effect, too.
This is funny - I don't think I've ever been fully on the Howard bandwagon. I'm not his biggest cheerleader. It's just that I don't agree with singling him out.

Not trying to sound snarky here but, have you been reading the posts? He isn't being singled out, at least that's not how I've been looking at it. I'm pretty sure everyone agrees the team played like crap. But giving Howard NONE of the blame is ridiculous.

Edit: and I also don't think anyone expects us to win 16 consecutive, but I think hoping that we don't give games away (like I think we did in game 2) isn't unreasonable.

That'd be fine if this was the Wings of '02 or '08/'09. This current Wings team can't overcome those kinds of stupid mistakes in a series where they are clearly over matched talent-wise. They need everybody playing their best hockey right now, including especially the goaltender.
Howard of Game 1 gives us an excellent chance to win this series.
Howard of Game 2 means we're not gonna win another game till October.

At work so I haven't been able to post for a bit, but this is about what I would've said. These are the Bruins, can't give them momentum. That goal let them dictate the pace. Like I said though I'm not saying it's the reason we lost, I'm just saying you can't definitively say one way or the other if it cost us the game. Who knows how we would've played had we scored first, or kept the board at 0's like game one. I do know our PP has to start doing something though.

One goal off a bad pass didn't cost the game. The fact that Glendening scored the only goal cost the game.

While I agree we needed to score more goals, and definitely could've used the pp not being terrible, I don't think you can say one way or the other whether that cost us the game.
Things could've been completely different had that play not happened. Momentum and playing from behind are big things.

Seriously, little Tatar can 'haul down' that giant ******* of a hockey player? Bulls***. I really wish Smith had fought Chara, seemed like he was willing but that tree wouldn't even put his stick down.

Yea Q really improved his play the second half, I had no complaints with him. So kudos for that. First half, different story.

Exactly this. So at this point I'm neither here nor there about whether he resigns or not. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the kids brought up though.
