#2569098 Report: Red WIngs interested in Franson

Almquist is playing in the SEL Wings don't own his rights and I doubt he'll return to the NHL next year.

They own his NHL rights

#2568822 Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

First tier are projected top 6 forwards, top d pair, starting goalies. Larkin, Mantha, Sproul, Mrazek. Second tier are projected to be good players but there are questions and projections are more 2md/3rd line tweeners, solid second pair d, goalies who might start or might be backups. That's Pulk. Lesser prospects are projected bottom end of the roster guys like we Jensen Callahan and Ferraro, and guys who may or may not be NHL players. These guys have little value. Then there are guys like Frk and Tvrdon who have no trade value and are more or less filler for minor league rosters.

Glad he's not our problem

#2568449 Report: Red WIngs interested in Franson

I don't believe for a minute that the Leafs won't get more than a second for Franson, and adding Callahan or Ferraro to it won't be enough.  I'm not as high on Pulkinnen as some people, but that's the level of prospect they'll get in addition to the pick, and I don't want to move him for a guy who is probably only going to be here for the rest of this season.

Franson isn't that good. He might be better playing for a team with better structure but he might also get banished by Babcock. I'd rather stand pat if they can't make a major move.

#2567703 Marchenko recalled from GR... Ouellet sent down

Kronwall scores well over 40 points a year and is on pace to do so again, but he's not good offensively and his offense has dried up because he hasn't scored a ton the last week or two, because nobody goes through stretches like that. Gotcha.

The Wings are 1 point out of first in their division with a game in hand on TB.  Depending on the D brought in, I think one player absolutely puts them in the upper echelon of the league as long as they don't give up a bunch of roster players to do it.

It's funny though, people bash Holland for not having balls to make a trade, but then whenever someone suggests trading anyone decent to bring in a good player like Ekman-Larson or whoever, they panic and say no way, because FUTURE!

#2567175 Franzen on IR

Posted by DickieDunn on 30 January 2015 - 02:30 PM

Nobody would take Franzen in a trade.

If they try to waive him to GR, he'll retire and the Wings will be screwed.

If they waive him and release him, the cap penalty screws them.

The only real option is keep him and hope he either stays healthy, or sits on IR for the duration of his contract.

Pulkinnen or Jurco won't be waived.  If someone gets waived, it would be Andersson.  The Wings don't let players go if they're going to be good, the guys they have lost on waivers have done virtually nothing.  Knuble was the last good player the Wings let go because they didn't have room for a young guy, and that was more because Bowman wanted vets than anything to do with Holland.

#2566228 Larkin or Mantha?

Posted by DickieDunn on 27 January 2015 - 07:48 PM

I also disagree on one of Tatar or Nyquist being redundant.  I think Tatar's play-style is kind of a cross between Jiri Hudler and Darren Helm.  Hudler in that he knows how to score goals from farther out, and they share a similar stature.  But Tatar plays with a similar mentality to Darren Helm, in that he does not shy away from greasy areas, loves holding onto the puck, and is incredibly tenacous.  Its that second aspect that I think gives Tatar real value to this team and can potentially make him a special player.  He also fits perfectly into the fast-paced forecheck system that the Wings have utilized this year, and its been paying dividends for him.
Nyquist I'm actually kind of lost with.  He definitely can score goals, but he's turning into a powerplay specialist.  Half his points this year have come on the powerplay, and more than half of his goals have come with the man advantage.  This could be a case of other teams playing him more tightly than last year when noone knew about him, and he has been struggling to adapt to the added pressure 5 on 5.  But when there's more time and space (as there is on a powerplay), he's been able to capitalize.  Hopefully with time Nyquist can become as effective 5 on 5 as he is on the powerplay, but until then, I think Tatar is more valuable to this team and has an added dimension to his game, but Nyquist has been able to make teams pay for penalties, and he's been doing it all year long.  That, by extension, has been adding value to the guys on our team who can draw the penalties in the first place.
Anyway, so how they've been performing so far this year I'd say they're filling two very different roles.I didnt say that they were clones, I said they are similar. For years, weve bemoaned the fact that we arent big enough, arent tough enough to play against, dont have any right shooters. Tatar and Nyquist are similar in the fact that they arent big, arent tough, both shoot left. Both of them have good value right now, lets move one to address others needs and become a better, more well rounded team.
I agree that Tatar is the one to keep. Id love to move Nyquist in a package for Burns or Wheeler. Imagine in two years...
Abdelkader - Zetterberg - Wheeler
Tatar - Sheahan - Jurco
Mantha - Datsyuk - Pulkkinen
Deadly.

Tatar is plenty tough. You mean they don't fight. Other people answered the rest about their playing styles.

Holland should trade for an elite defenseman and a power forward.  But only if he can get them for guys I don't really like.  And if he doesn't get that done, I'll spend the next 8 months telling everyone how badly he failed and that a GOOD GM would have been able to do it, because 5 average to bad players equals one really good player.  Like that time I went to a BMW dealer and tried to talk him into trading me a brand new Z4 in exchange for an '02 Mountaineer, a '09 Ranger, an '87 Escort, and '86 Daytona, a transmission from an old Cutlass Supreme, an '89 Blazer, a '91 Taurus with a blown up engine, and my weird uncle's old Camaro.  That's like 7 cars plus a tranny for ONE car, super great deal.

Babcock praised Legwand too, right before making him a 4th line winger. Don't read much into Babcock's comments.

#2565603 Franzen on IR

Posted by DickieDunn on 22 January 2015 - 05:15 PM

I don't know that he'll come back from this one.  He very well could finish his career on IR.

Is that an assessment you've seen somewhere?  I haven't really heard anything about his injury since it happened, but I didn't know know it was anything that serious.

Just bases on personal experience with concussions and what has happened with other players. I'm not saying he wontbor can't come back, but there's no guarantee.

#2565422 Petry next Oiler to be shopped - FTLOG Kenny, get it done!

I don't think that package would get anyone better than what the Wings have now.  Nastasiuk, or a similar prospect, simply doesn't have much value, neither does Kindl.  Ouellet has some, but not as much as a lot of fans think, and the pick depends on which round.  A lot of sub-par to decent pieces generally doesn't get you a higher end piece.

With the number of players the Wings have on the roster signed longer term or they plan on keeping, plus the 4 prospects who look like they have a good chance of being NHL players, their best bet is to trade Smith or Dekeyser, plus a D prospect, and a draft pick if they trade for a top 4 D who's going to be around for awhile.

For those who think that Petry being the best D in Edmonton means a damn thing, please remember that Quincey was a top pair D on an LA team that was better than the Oilers are now, and was the Avs top D the next year.  Being the best of crap doesn't mean you're not crap, it just means you're less smelly crap.
