#2530087 Red Wings rookie camp roster revealed

Posted by DannyD on 05 July 2014 - 10:20 AM

I'm seeing a ton of really good things about AA so far in camp.

As an added bonus, he's not only a speed demon who has incredible offensive abilities, but he's also pretty good defensively as well. He has the potential to be a dynamic two way forward with high offensive potential. - WIIM

Athanasiou takes the Datsyuk faceoff approach. If at first you don't succeed, steal it back anyway.

Yup AA is practicing face offs instead off drills with the wingers. I read he won every faceoff against Turgeon and Ehn.

I always take not of which player is the last off the ice, staying to tap/fist bump his teammates. On team Lidstrom it's Andreas Athanasiou

Athanasiou goes all out in these faceoffs. If he doesn't win one, he still finds a way to get the puck right back. Unbelievable. #RedWings

Andreas Athanasiou looks the most NHL-ready on Team Lidstrom, possibly in the entire camp. #RedWings

LOTS of high praise for AA everywhere you look.

Some other things that stood out to me..

After a few times through the drills however, Nosek became a little more comfortable and made some great offensive moves. Time will tell, but he appears to have some great offensive abilities and slick moves with the puck. - WIIM

Jiri Fischer on Pulks... "He came into camp last year "ripped." In better shape than anyone."

More: "A smaller version of Brett Hull, can score like Jari Kurri."

He expects Pulks to come in and challenge for a spot on the Wings roster during camp this year.

#2529503 TANK IT! 2014-2015 Season

Posted by DannyD on 02 July 2014 - 01:58 PM

And if we make the playoffs yet get touched in the 1st round (or even finish 9th or 10th), all you'll see is the same status-quo approach from Holland and head into the following season with the same roster, just a year older.

Rinse and repeat.

Except it's not going to be the same roster per say. Yes mostly the same on paper, but we ended the season without Big E, Weiss, Hank and 1/2 of Pav.

We started the season without Sheahan, Jurco, Nyquist, Glendening and Helm. The team we ended up with "on paper" of...

Z-D-Aflie

Goose-Weiss-Franzen

Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco

Abby-Helm-Glendening/Miller

Kronwall-Smith

Big E-Dekeyser

Quincey-Ouellet/Kindl/Lashoff

Barely even played together as a unit at the same time! So even though we didn't go out and overpay for a bunch of unproven or old guys we will still see change.

The blind head in the sand defense in here is astounding.

Fine guys, so you're all pretty much saying if we make the playoffs and lose the same way as this season, you will be happy.

Nice to see how easily satisfied you are.

We aren't Cup contenders right now. Signing Niskanen or Boyle wouldn't have changed that at all. They would've helped, but they wouldn't have put us over the top. So yes, I would love to still see us make the playoffs even if we do lose in the 1st round, but give me Pav on two legs...not just one, a healthy Z, and healthy Big E in that series and things might've been a little different. We might not have won but I don't think we would've lost 4-1. Not to mention our kids are getting valuable playoff experience. Sure as hell beats missing the playoffs all together. So what if we get a pick 3-4 picks lower than what we would've had? We aren't tanking. It's not going to happen.  Pardon me if I have realistic expectations.

#2529430 Red Wings rookie camp roster revealed

Posted by DannyD on 02 July 2014 - 11:43 AM

I think Marchenko only joined the Griffins half way through the year so he would have been in Russia and wouldn't have been around for last year's camp. Jensen, Sproul, etc. probably went to last years camp. That's my theory, but I have nothing to back that up really.

Agreed on AA. After the Jarnkrok trade, everyone said we have no center prospects, but AA plays Center (as well as LW) and Mattias Janmark, who did quite well in Sweden (why is he not at the camp?).

Ah. I'm not sure if Marchenko was at camp last year or not, but that would make sense.

I'm imagining a future line with AA and Helm and drooling over the speed...

#2529427 TANK IT! 2014-2015 Season

Posted by DannyD on 02 July 2014 - 11:40 AM

So let me get this straight. Just because we missed out on signing ONE DMAN you want to tank the whole season? Holy overreaction Batman!

Forward depth for our farm team and that's it. And yes, all 3 at times were playing somewhere in the top 6 throughout last season, especially Abdelkader who is cemented as a 1st line winger on our team (for some reason).

Looking at our squad, I don't know how you can look at it and actually look forward to next season. I literally don't see how this is possible, especially after last season with the same squad.

And before you go blaming injures, we had a NEGATIVE record heading into December before all the major injuries really started happening.

Just because they need to tank, doesn't mean we can't enjoy some fun moments in the season. Look at the Islanders and Oilers. Despite them tanking, it's still fun as well to watch Tavares and Hopkins tear it up.

So we had a NEGATIVE record heading into December. Before Pav and Z missed 40 games. Before Big E missed 30 and had an extremely underachieving Weiss. And we still made the playoffs? Oh god we must've played HORRIBLE to still get into the playoffs the rest of the season despite not having Pav, Z, Big E, Franzen etc... Don't forget guys like Sheahan and Jurco didn't even get called up until half way through the season. Goose didn't get called up until late November.

And injuries are to blame for ANY time Glenny and Miller might have spent in the top 6 last season. Lest we all forget we had multiple games with Andersson being our #1C because Pav, Z, Weiss, and Helm were ALL out.

#2529110 Quincey re-signed by DET. 2 yr s $4.25 mill AAV

Posted by DannyD on 01 July 2014 - 08:16 PM

You know, it really amazes me how quickly everyone seems to just want to fire KH and blow up the ship. And because of what exactly? We re-signed a guy who played well for us in the second half and has a proven track record of being a solid 3-4 D man. So we didn't sign any big name free agents, and? Did we really want Boyle here for 3 years? No. Orpik for 5 years and $5.5m? No. Niskanen for 7 years? I didn't. Stralman for 5 years? No. The list goes on and on. Guys who are cashing in on one or two good years (besides Boyle) and using the thin market to drive up their prices. It is frankly, a joke. The worst thing the wings could have done was to sign someone like that for a massive term which locks us in, blocking the path for 1 or 2 kids when they are ready either this season or next.

Why is it that we are so quick to lambast something that we don't like, yet it takes 100 things to satisfy us? I mean, for crying out loud, we're not the Leafs. It's not like we haven't won a cup in the last 50 years. And also, it's not even like we're not competitive anymore. This team was a playoff team. Granted, the last 2 years have been touch and go, but 2 years ago we took the cup champs to 7 and had them on the ropes. In that 2012-13 roster, there were 26 players who were part of this seasons roster. 26!!!!!!!! And this season, most were injured, and yet somehow, due to some strong play of guys who will form the future of this team, we made it in.

There is, quite clearly, a rebuild in progress at the moment. And it amazes me how people can't seem to get excited about the future prospects of Dekeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Jurco, Sproul, Marchenko, Ouellet, Mantha, Mrazek. Combined with a healthy D and Z and the other GOOD pieces we have on this team. So what's changed? Why has everyone become so despondent, when really, I think our time is coming right around the corner. Maybe not this year, but the year after for sure. If our kids continue trending upwards, we'll be right up there. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but to ignore the obvious positives that are emanating from this teams future and insist on throwing everything out in the trash just because we struck out on 1 day of the year is, in my eyes, nuts.

You. I like you. +1,000,000

We are building for the future while still being competitive. Mantha, Sheahan, Goose, Tats, Jurco, Ouellete, Sproul, Marchenko, Smith, Dekeyser, Larkin, AA2, Pulks, Mrazek. Those are the guys who are gonna win us our next championship. Those are the guys that will lure in the top UFA's that want to win a cup. The future is so bright but people refuse to see anything but OMG WE SIGNED QUINCEY. WORST DMAN EVER. At least he didn't miss any games to injury last year. Probably like the only guy on the team to play all 82.

Look at how many games we lost to injury/late callups last year! Pavel only played 45 games. Z played 45. Big E played 48. Weiss 26. Franzen 54. Helm 42. Goose 57, Sheahan 42. Not a single one of the top 4 C's on our roster played more than 45 games! It's hard to believe we can be struck with that much bad luck again this year.

I can't see any way in which we are a worse team this year than last year.

Weiss didn't pass, Alfie didn't pass. Datsyuk resigned, Kronwall resigned. What do you want? We can't sign everyone. There are 29 other teams that are trying to get better just like we are. Do you want us to overpay someone just to say we signed them then to be stuck with a horrible cap hit for someone who isn't worth it 4-5 years down the road when we need to resign a bunch of our young guys?

We are building for the next 8-12 years not the next 2. People can't get that through their heads.

Yep , and in these next two years, the future beyond would have benefitted from giving Sproul and/or Ouellet a shot instead of a terrible defenseman making too much money.

Who says Ouellet won't get a shot to play? There is still one open spot. They even started Ouellet in the playoffs instead of Kindl. Sproul isn't ready. It wouldn't be fair to him to bring him up just to see him struggle and have the fans jump all over him like they do Smith.

How many players have to pass on Detroit, how many times do we have to be "in the mix" and end up empty handed? Trying isn't good enough anymore. When you miss out on one big name ufa, that's one thing, then a couple years later, not having fixed the problem via trade or free agency, instead using useless plugs a la Quincey, you miss out on a whole lot of big time upgrades? disgraceful, unacceptable... #fireholland

How does he replace Lidstrom and Rafalski? Those guys can't be replaced.

Rafalski is replaceable.  Lidstrom, not so much.

Which is why you don't try and replace Lidstrom with one guy.  You have to re-evaluate how the whole team is built, because Lids was the keystone of it.  Then you make adjustments and give the team a new identity.

Since Lidstrom retired, the Wings are basically the same kind of team only with a massive hole in the blueline and with Dats, Z, and Franzen no longer in their prime.

It's not like Holland hasn't tried to get help on the blueline. We were spurned by several guys this offseason and the Suter situation is well documented. We have 5 guys in the AHL who could all play in the NHL in the next two years, granted they won't all play for us. It takes time to "give the team a new identity." You can't do that over night in the salary cap era unless you get a guy like Crosby in the draft. The identity is starting to change with Goose, Tats, Sheahan, Jurco all coming up. I'd be surprised if we didn't end up seeing one of the young Dmen play at least 35-40 games this season. The change is happening, but it just isn't going to happen overnight.

#2526087 2014 draft thoughts.

Posted by DannyD on 27 June 2014 - 11:06 AM

I'd prefer to see Holland trade up this year. Ekblad is out of reach but then trade up to grab one of the skilled, physical forwards. Red Wings have depth and plenty of skill but no size whatsoever.

Jurco, Sheahan, Mantha and the evil Franzen all have size. Dekeyser, Smith, Marchenko, Sproul, and Bäckman are all 6'2" or taller. AA2 is actually much bigger than most people think at 6'2" 200lbs. I imagine he would put on at least another 5lbs working out in GR. The kid we just signed from across the pond, Nosek is 6'2" 202 lbs. (exact same size as Kesler) We have also 4 young Dmen out there who are 6'5" or taller.

We have definitely been investing more in size and skill lately. To insinuate that we have only been picking 5'10" 160lb guys is dumb.

Interesting note. I went back to look at last years prospect rankings and Sproul has gone from 6'3" 186 lbs to 6'4 205 lbs. He may be closer to 215lbs by the time he reaches the NHL.

#2525883 Wings to have face to face with Matt Niskanen

Posted by DannyD on 26 June 2014 - 02:43 PM

While I do love most of our kid Dmen I think signing Niskanen would give us a lot of options when it comes to trading some of them to better our team.

Personally I would keep the righties (Marchenko and Sproul) and attempt to trade Bäckman and/or Ouellet in a package for someone like Kesler or E.Kane. OR to move up to the top of the draft and get ourselves a future #1C.

Tats+Helm+Ouellet for Kane/Kesler

Kronner-Dekeyser

Niskanen-Smith

Big E-Marchenko/Bäckman

That D is a TON better than last year. No Kindl, Lashoff or Quincey in the top 6.

#2521135 Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

Posted by DannyD on 19 May 2014 - 10:03 AM

Call me crazy but I don't think we need to trade the farm for a "sniper" especially when we have someone like Mantha who could step in this year or next year. Someone who could pot 35-40 goals would be awesome, don't get me wrong, but look at it in the grand scheme of things. We have 4 guys next year that are still relatively new to the team that could all score around 20 goals.

Goose 22-24 goals.

Tatar 21-22

Sheahan 18-20

Jurco 18-20

Pulks could probably be a 15-20 goal scorer in is first couple years if given PP time as well, imo.

I would much rather have balanced scoring and guys on three lines who can net us some goals rather than relying on one or two guys to get the job done, not to mention these kids are going to keep progressing and becoming better players. If we could add someone in FA than I'm all for it, but I don't see the need in trading away Goose or Tatar for a guy who MAYBE will net 10 more goals than them.

Now I would trade away Tats in a package for a top Dman, but that's a different story.

#2520317 Will Mantha join GR after the QMJHL playoffs?

Posted by DannyD on 13 May 2014 - 09:16 PM

Mantha just scored the game winner with 52 seconds left for the QMJHL Championship! No GR for him, headed to the Memorial Cup!

Edit: Also finished the playoffs with 24 G in 24 GP meaning he finished the whole year 81 G in 81 GP.

#2518282 Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

Posted by DannyD on 29 April 2014 - 08:36 PM

Am I the only one that thinks Sheahan would do better on the 1st line than Abby? He played pretty good in front of the net this season and has shown he has good hands. Obviously I'd rather have a guy like Vanek or Moulson on the top line, but if we strike out on FA then I would give Sheahan a look on the top line.

Plays like these make me very curious as to how he could do with Z and Dats.

I'd like to run this lineup a couple games just to see what happens. We know Nyquist and Franzen have shown good chemistry so that line could score some goals if Weiss can get healthy. A third line of Tatar-Helm-Jurco would be FAST. They could really change the pace of the game. 4th line is probably the best checking line we could do with our current roster.

Z-Dats-Sheahan

Franzen-Weiss-Nyquist

Tatar-Helm-Jurco

Miller-Glendening-Abby

Datsyuk taking part in line rushes with Helm and Abdelkader. Looks like Datsyuk expects to play tomorrow.
