Let's have a look at the positives of this trade though:
1. Legwand has 40 points in 60 games under Barry Trotz's Nashville system
2. Legwand waived his NTC to come here, has a place here, so chances are he re-signs here (hopefully for a good cap hit)
3. Our centre depth is ridiculous, and will be for at least another 4-5 years (D,Z, Legwand, Weiss, Helm, Sheahan, Andy, Glendening) which made Jarnkrok expendable (Babcock would have none of that attitude)
4. Legwand has managed to stay relatively healthy most of his career, whereas our other centres are made of glass right now
5. He's got great speed and is a decent 2 way centre (you can't play in Nashville if you're not a 2 way player)
All in all, Legwand makes our team look much, much better. He gives us a chance at the playoffs, especially since Datsyuk is now out for three weeks and Helm is out. Andersson as our 1C for one game is one game too many. On another note, I absolutely love Sheahan and his line. Their shifts are easily our most exciting shifts each game.
Why would one of the better AHL prospects go home if they can make more money here and get a place on the big club soon? The Predators need offensive help their D and goaltending are set so it's not like he wouldn't have chance there. If he is indeed set on going back this deal would be better but till that happens I am not buying it.
Jarnkrok wasn't making Detroit next year. Sheahan has passed him up obviously and Jarnkrok isn't a 4th line guy. Not his game.
So what if he plays for Nashville? He wasn't going to play for us. If he makes Nashville's club good for him, they are in a different conference. No harm.
Holland said Legwand is going to be our #1 center for awhile between Nyquist and Franzen. So I'm assuming Legwand is #1 for the next 3 weeks while Datsyuk is out. Still gives us a chance to make the playoffs. Certainly a hell of a better chance than Andersson playing #1. IF we make the playoffs we could do some damage.
Miller - Glendening/Weiss - Abby.
I feel a lot more comfortable playing Legwand #2 than Weiss at this point. At least it would allow Z and Pav to play on the same line if we make the playoffs.
EDIT: Could also allow us to buy out Weiss this summer and resign Legwand.
2 of those 3 guys are already sitting. I also don't know what's wrong with Datsyuk's knee, and unless you're on the Wings' medical staff or know someone who is, I doubt you do either, so know the hell knows if it's an injury that needs surgery.
I think that if they call up Jarnkrok and/or make a move to bring in someone, they'll be able to hold onto the playoff spot, which I think is the mandate from ownership. Hell, even shifting Mule over to center could be enough if Datyuk is going to be back in a few games.
I know they are sitting, but it doesn't mean Babcock won't put them in instead of bringing some kids up from GR.
I don't know what's wrong with Pav's knee but I would assume he needs some sort of surgery or at least a good deal of rest. I feel like he probably needs some sort of surgery but is trying to tough it out for the team in hopes of at least playing a few games. Can you imagine how much easier, yet tough to swallow, Hollands job would be right now if both Pav and Z were out the rest of the season? I don't think we would be talking about a trade at all, if we did it would be more selling than buying, imo.
The thing with Kesler is, does he even waive for the Wings ? Yeah, he is a Michigan boy but other than that the Wings situation is not that much different from the one he currently is in. The guy wants to win a cup neither Detroit nor Vancouver are going to be cup contenders in this or next year. Another thing to consider is again the asking price, with Pittsburgh offering Pouiliot, Bennet, Sutter + 1 let them get him and mortage their future...
Jurco, Helm, Kindl + first won't get the job done and Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan and Dekeyser should be non starters, period.
Heck even Holmgren was rumored to be shocked by the asking price one of Couture, B. Schenn, Laughton + 1 so go along Shero add another piece for your insane top 6 instead of fixing your D
As for Vanek if the Wings want him, make him an offer come July 1 the guy has said over and over again, he will test free agency.
Kesler, who has a no-trade clause, is willing to accept a trade to the Flyers, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings, both of whom have also inquired about his availability.
The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings also expressed interest in Kesler, but the Canucks will not deal him to either team, while the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets have been told Kesler will not waive his no-trade clause to go there.
I agree with you. I definitely wouldn't trade Nyquist, Tatar or Jurco for a rental. That's our problem though. We don't have the cap space to bring in any big time guy unless we somehow got them to take back someone like Bert which doesn't seem very realistic. We are more fitted to stick with the guys we have until FA hits. We can get some guys off the books and free up cap space to make a move then.
I do like the talent we have coming up and we develop talent very well. In say 4 years our team could look like this granted Z will be getting ready to head back to Sweden to retire.
Nyquist - Z - Mantha
Tatar - Sheahan - Jurco
Abby - Helm - Callahan?
? - Glendening - ?
Dekeyser - Big E
Smith - Ouellet
Sproul - Jensen/Marenchenko
Still leaves room in case guys like Jarnkrok, Pulkinnen, Athanasiou, Frk never crack the big leagues. Or trade assets.
I don't want to trade away a potential star in Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Mantha for a rental or a defenseman who might get us in the playoffs but knocked out in the 2nd round. These guys are the future of our team. I would rather end the playoff streak this year to benefit us in the long term rather than selling the farm.
Nyquist is very good, but Tatar is better. Tatar creates all his offense on his own. Nyquist has superior linemates, more icetime, and more PP time (with better linemates again). Look at his hatty last night, Zetterberg basically gift wrapped that one for him. No reason to believe that Tatar wouldn't do the same with similar opportunites, since he's basically doing the same with third line minutes and two rookies.
Also, Tatar does not play bad defense...and Nyquist is no shutdown defensive forward. They both work extremely hard on defense (watch Tatar backcheck), but they're both too small to be effective right now. I think everyone saying Nyquist is better defensively is just something people repeat for the sake of it. Tatar gets back as often as any on the team at this point.
Well then don't set your sights too high on trade deadline day because if you're not willing to part with a good player, you're not going to get anyone back who's worth a damn.
In no way am I saying Nyquist is a shut down defensive forward or Tatar is horrible defensively. Tatar has gotten a lot better defensively and he works really hard. Both of the guys are learning so much from Z and it shows in their game. Personally I feel like Nyquist is the better all around player at this point. I think they will both be staples in the top 6 once Z and Pav are gone, if not before then as long as they aren't traded obviously.
I don't think we need to trade either of them though. I would do a package of Smith or Ouellet, Jurco and a 1st, for a Dman but I'm weary of trading away young assets because I don't think we are a championship team this season anyway.
