#2536979 2014 Preseason Thread

from Damien Cox of Sportsnet,

Are these the things that worry you the most?

Here is a more exciting preview from Sportsnet.

http://www.sportsnet...roit-red-wings/

Biggest story line to watch: Can the kids grow up quickly enough to keep Mike Babcock around? The best coach in the business is in the final year of his contract, and while he’s said all the right things about staying (and GM Ken Holland has echoed him), if the team can’t improve on last season’s just-scraping-into-the-playoffs effort, he might go somewhere that offers him a better chance at a Cup. That said, there’s a lot of talent here, and if there’s a man to get the most of it, it’s Babcock.

2014-15 prediction: A slow start turns into a rolling finish as the Grand Rapids kids infiltrate the lineup even further and the Wings start simply outskating opponents with one of the league’s youngest lineups. They run through the first two rounds in six games each and find themselves tied 2-2 in the third period of Game 7 against the Penguins with a spot in the Stanley Cup Final on the line.

Sorry if it's not doom-and-gloomy enough to scratch that itch, people.

Is tanking something to be proud of ? Of Course not -at least not for me- but the league is making it harder and harder for teams like the Wings to ice a great roster. And yeah personally I'd rather be a bottom 5 team than one that barely misses the playoffs and get's some midrange picks.

You make it sound like these are the only two choices. This barely missing (or is that 'barely making?')  the playoffs thing is new to the Wings. I feel like if they can hold ground over the next couple of seasons, we're going to see them slowly moving back into contention. I like to think that 5-7 years down the road when Detroit can contend for a cup again, that I'll look back on the years leading up to this more fondly than I would if they had to be Buffalo/Florida/Edmonton/Chicago/Pittsburgh bad in order to get there.

If they can pull of the rebuild-on-the-fly this time? That IMO will be Holland's legacy.

And a chance to draft Eichel or McDavid

See, to me, you say that like it’s something to be proud of. Any team can take a crack at theses two if they are prepared to suck a whole ton of ass for a year.

Maybe I’m misreading your tone. If so I apologize.

I know some people wish the Wings would just tank and get some top 5 picks but I’d be more proud, as a fan, if this team was able to get back into contention without really breaking stride.

#2536512 Mantha's Injury

Posted by rick zombo on 18 September 2014 - 12:28 PM

Dude still has a chance of being a regular on this team sometime this season. It's not like you make the Wings out of camp or don't make the Wings at all.

Anyway, crappy news for him. This has nothing to do with conditioning age etc and serves as a reminder that the Wings really do have bad luck with injuries.

Reminds me of the time Kronwall broke his leg in California during warm-up after he got caught in a rut on the ice.

Burkie going all out on truculence, it gives them a chance to McDavid and will make sure that Monahan, Johnny Hockey and Baertschi can focus on hockey plus the Flames fans will see a very entertaining product. Not a bad idea at all.

This team is going to kick some serious ass Bollig, McGrattan, Yonkman, Gillies, Ferland, Wolf ... god I wish Torts would still coach in Vancouver just to see his face when Hardley sends his "top 6" out

Well, Burke's model worked really well for Toronto................

Just like Sproul, Marchenko and Mrazek are the next Lidstrom, Pronger and Dominators *g*

Just like you and DeGraa are the next Bob MacKenzie and Pierre LeBrun

#2536439 Mantha's Injury

Posted by rick zombo on 17 September 2014 - 02:00 PM

Now if the Wings dressed some enforcers for that game.....That knee injury would've never happened.

I think a few Bruins scouts were at that game. They all stared at his knee and BAMB!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes he is the next Crosby for sure...

What a thoughtful contribution.

Yup, Athanasiou looks unreal. I hope Blashill plays him and Mantha together all year in Grand Rapids.

Once again, extremely happy Holland doesn't have the quick trigger finger that a lot of LGWers have. A lot of people on here were ready to trade this kid just a few short months ago. I said it back then and I'll say it again now, this kid is a keeper for sure.

I'd trade him for Shea Weber ;)

The knock on Mantha at the draft was that he had questionable work ethic and day-to-day consistency and compete level.

Obviously a lot of scouts were a little off the mark.

edit to add: the best part is that Athanasiou also looks like he's going to a legit keeper too.

#2536343 Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

Posted by rick zombo on 16 September 2014 - 05:11 PM

Never in doubt.

For anyone keeping track, that's DD + Tatar + Sheahan all wrapped up for less than 6M/year.

Hollands RFA dealings continue to be impeccable.

A lot of people posting about how he was low balled, but not one praising Holland for getting him so cheap? Anyway will this deal end with him being an RFA or a UFA?

Exactly. Now the talk will be about how DeKeyser will walk in 2 years because Holland low-balled him. Anyway, moving on, I'm glad the deal is done.

If Alfie does retire this gives Holland a little cap space if he could ever swing that deal for a top four D man.

#2536311 Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

Posted by rick zombo on 16 September 2014 - 02:19 PM

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking DD would've taken that offer ($2.75 to $3 million per season for 3 seasons), but I'm guessing Holland is looking to offer less since DD is a RFA.

We obviously don't know what's going behind the scenes, but this is exactly what I feared...One of our more promising Dmen not getting signed, and potentially sitting out for some time.

Holland has shown a history of paying for potential (See: Kronwall, Filpulla) with hopes that the player grows into the contract. This is a fact.

Obviously the Holland haters are hoping that Kenny offered him 100 dollars/year so that they can be even angrier at the man.

But the truth of the matter is, DD's agent is most likely asking for 4M/per.

Like I said, with Holland's mostly spotless history of dealing with RFAs, ypu have to think that the friction is coming from the DeKeyser camp.

#2536300 Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

^ Exactly.

I love DD but if any of you armchair GMs think it's easy to negotiate a contract with a kid who has only played 70 games or whatever, then you're snorting the crack dust, plain and simple.

To me, DD is to the D what Tatar is to the offence. Both have had similar career arcs so far, except Tatar has a Calder Cup MVP under his belt and almost scored 20 last year in his first almost full season.

If you ask me, something like 2.75-3M/year for 3 years would have gotten this deal done a month ago. I have a hard time thinking Holland wouldn't offer that. Makes me think that it's DD's camp that is being unrealistic, not Holland.
