#2557481 Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Posted by rick zombo on Yesterday, 11:40 PM

we don't?

Admittedly I can't see a scenario where the Wings could get Hall anytime soon, but I also can't imagine why the Wings wouldn't want him given the right deal.

Yes he plays a little recklessly and isn't great defensively, but I can't hold too much against him for any of that given the disaster that is the Edmonton Oilers.  He still has maturing to do, and it's not gonna happen in Edmonton under the conditions there for the last few years.

Yeah. Maybe a little hubris on my part.

The proud Wings fan in me says “we don’t need that big-lipped potential dressing room cancer that eats up coaches like they’re chicken mcnuggets”.

But you’re right. Technically, any team should want him badly. I get what you’re saying.

If I’m Howard I just let them bury one here before the end of OT

Maybe so, but that hardly suggests a league wide conspiracy in favor of the Columbus Blue Jackets (lol).  Also, considering we get more powerplays that we give, does every other team in the league have a solid argument for suggesting the league has a pro-Detroit bias?  Of course not.  That would be silly.

I totally agree.

But Detroit should have had more than one PP tonight.

1st place in their division.  3rd in the conference.  6th in the league.

Tank it

He doesn't kill penalties.  He just kills other players' confidence by staring at them menacingly from the bench.

Well he's definitely had lots of time to practice his stare "from the bench".

...and when was the last time he "managed" the Rags to a Cup?

Sather? Never. Neil Smith was GM in 94. And he learned his thing or two with the Wings. In fact, I believe he scouted Lidstrom and was a big part of the Wings stealing him in the 3rd round.

So yeah, Sather and Lowe can both suck it.

Who's the most relieved man in Canada right now?

Colin Firth?

Big E isn't a good top pairing dman is what you're not getting

Right. I knew there was something I didn't get. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'll defer to your wisdom. Mike Green would be an excellent #2 Dman.

Pretty sure if we make a trade for a dman, Big E is being bumped out of that #2. Why keep someone there who provides zero offensively?

Because preventing goals is equally as important as scoring them?

Am I missing something here?

God no.

Well if we can land Green or Yandle and bump Ericsson out of the #2 D spot I'll be happy. Seriously Big E's stats: 31 GP 0G 7A and -2 I know its not all about points or +/- when evaluating dmen but come on don't we expect a little more in Detroit from our top pairing?

Well I can tell you this. Mike Green won't be bumping anyone out of that #2 D spot.

Yandle is clearly the best of the three but Green is the best option for Detroit in my opinion...

Depends on how you look at it.

Green would be cheaper via trade and he's a righty. But he's also a UFA and we all know how lucky the Wings have been signing UFA blueliners.

Yandle is in his prime, under (a great) contract and would be part of this team core for a few years, at least. Plus he's better defensively than Green.

So, in my world, the best D man who also has the best contract would be the best option for Detroit.

Myers isn't even a factor in this conversation. Me no want.

I think he'll cost more than that, but not much more. (Certainly nowhere near what Yandle would cost.) The problem is, his cap hit's $6M and we only have about half that in cap space. Moving Kindl would get us just about there, but no one wants a #6 defenseman with a $2.4M cap hit who's under contract until 2017.

Currently, yes.

But as I said in another thread. If Holland waits until the deadline to make a deal, he can take on 9M+ in salaries. So acquiring Green would not be a cap issue.

#2556829 12/13 GDT : Red Wings 1 @ Maple Leafs 4 *MOD WARNING POST 198*

Posted by rick zombo on 15 December 2014 - 12:30 AM

Those terrible Leafs just won again, in a shootout. They now have 18 wins and are only two points behind Detroit with a game in hand. But we're so much better than them.

We are better than the Leafs. In almost every way.

Goals Against, PK%, PP%.

They only have us beat in goals for. They’re #1 in the league. But they’re a run and gun team with bad defence (#20 in goals against). That is, ultimately, losing hockey.
