Turtleneck's goal came when Detroit should have been on the PP for the Abdelkader takedown.

:)

Nice to know someone else calls him that.

And yes, you're right. And I'm still furious.

If anything they'll only give it to an elite player who wore it somewhere else and signs during free agency.

I disagree.  If Sergei Fedorov played his entire career in Detroit and retired as a Red Wing, I have little doubt that his number would have been retired.

Agreed.

Just think if Feds had an opportunity to play with Lids (for several more seasons), Dats, Hank, etc.

As a fan - I remember how frustrating it was with all the issues between him, and Holland...To me - Feds will always be a Red Wing.

I respectfully disagree. For one, Feds was never a captain, and never would have been. Secondly, Yzerman and Lidstrom were generational legends. Yzerman was Detroit’s boy and Lidstrom has more hardware than Tony Stark. That’s what it takes to get your number retired in Detroit. Fedorov was never that type of player. He’s just not rafter-jersey material for these reasons.

I feel like I have to say this: I really really loved Fedorov. He was the “coolest” Red Wing I’ve ever seen. Cooler than Z even, and that’s saying something. When I was in my teens, playing hockey, I wanted to be him. But I see no scenario that ultimately gets his number retired. Just my opinion.

Great player, and integral to the teams resurgence...but I still say his jersey shouldn't be retired.  Happy to see him in the Hall though.

Only chance he had is if he continued to play here and retired as a Red Wing. But it would still be doubtful.

They're

You had to be "that guy"

You're right, but it does sort of insinuate that Holland was "thinking about it" instead of laughing him off the phone.

Yeah, I got that impression too.

But I barely believe that this deal was even in place. So I'm certainly not going to trust this source's description of Holland's reaction/handling of the offer. Plus, as if they're going to report that Holland "laughed" Murray off the phone. As if he'd even do that. He's a professional, not a 12 year old or a member of LGWs.

So you think these boards are more fun when nobody posts and everybody who does talks about how great we are?

No. What’s fun is watching you and Leftwinger dutch rudder one another over how much this team sucks.

Some middle ground would be nice. You know, actual level-headed hockey discussion instead of this doom-porn. Jesus christ.

Jerkwater, USA. More like Knee-jerkwater USA wha?

Just admit we're not Cup contenders and stop deluding yourself.  This defense and these goalies would make for the worst Cup winners in NHL history.  Even worse than Carolina in 2006.

Funny we only have these conversations when they’re losing.

#2569844 Heading to trade deadline, can someone help me understand

Posted by rick zombo on 11 February 2015 - 01:57 PM

I don't think so at all.  If I were them I'd have a five pronged strategy for success...

1.  Select organizational philosophy similar to Anaheim, San Jose, or Boston.

2.  Find coach who can play that game.

3.  Build around Phaneuf, JVR, Panik, Winnik, Reilly, Clarkson, Bozak and move Kessel, Lupul (if possible), Kadri, Santorelli, Gardiner for futures.

4.  Draft big centers as early as possible.

5.  Buy stop gaps in UFA until centers are ready.

Estimated time to competitiveness?  Five years.

Well, they'd already have a decent head start with Gauthier.

Franson and Smith would be a laugh a minute defensively.  Plus, their strengths are exactly the same.  It would be like playing Datsyuk with Datsyuk.  Both Smith and Franson can't lead the breakout at the same time.

Also, Babcock and Holland have explicitly said they want a right hander for the top four.  So I think they're probably ok with breaking up that pair.

And it's not like Babcock would ever put a guy deserving of "top four" minutes on the bottom pair. The same way he would never put a top six winger on the third/four line. Right?

Also, I said "start out", not "etch in stone".  Yeesh.

I'd be ok with moving Ouellette for Franson and roll something like this

Dekeseyer-Kronwall
Franson-Quincey
Smith-Ericsson

That's a lot of depth top to bottom. Very strong defensively with 1 offensive weapon. Babs could cut down on Kronwall's ice time

I'd be careful about breaking up the "DeQuincey" pairing (as Ken and Mickey call them). I'd start Franson out with Smith. But that's a pretty good looking group of six D.

Bad feeling about this one. I think basically just because it's on NBC.

I think I'd rather gnaw off my own pubes than listen to EdZo tonight. But alas.

#2569797 Nasty Business-Roussel ejected for cross-check to McQuaid's throat

Posted by rick zombo on 11 February 2015 - 12:55 PM

I agree with the parts about Chelios.  I disagree with everything else.  Everybody acts like line brawls happened every other night in the old days.  They didn't.  Guys didn't fight after each and every cheap shot back then.  Want proof?  Gordie Howe was LEGENDARY for elbowing.  He had very few career fights (relative to his contemporaries).  If he had to fight after every dirty elbow, he'd have a lot more.

The unsung, and sadly unheralded, characteristic of Old Time Hockey was that players often manned up and played through cheap bulls***.  They let a lot more go.  It was EXPECTED you'd get elbowed, or hit in the face with a stick.  It was part of the game.  It didn't require a line brawl, or even a fight, every time it happened.

As far as McQuaid goes.  He's a tough guy.  Big enough to eat hay.  He was also uninjured on the play.  He doesn't need anybody to stand up for him.  I'm sure he'll fight Roussell the next time they play.

First off, who the hell was going to fight Gordie?  You'd just take that elbow like the beotch you were and then say "thanks Mr Howe."

But yeah, forget fighting after sticks and elbows, dudes are doing it now after good, clean hits.

And yes - Howe only had 2 fights if I remember correctly...He was 1 guy nobody wanted to mess with.

That's what I was saying

The deadline is quickly becoming a "generally" unreliable option for improving a team. I say "generally" because although 16 teams make the playoffs, only a few teams a year get a real ugrade at the deadline. Same thing can be said for UFA time in early July.

More and more it seems like Holland's right: the only reliable way to build your team and the only way you're not at the mercy of other GMs, agents, supply and demand, etc, is to draft and develop from within.

#2569615 What should we do with the Monster?

Posted by rick zombo on 10 February 2015 - 01:16 PM

That Mrazek kid is getting so overrated wow. Kid has 0 playoff experience and still needs to work on things and yet some people would prefer him as a number 1..

What's the rush send him back to the minors, let Mrazek work on his rebound control, over committing and once the off-season roles around see where he is at and decide whether to keep or trade the monster then or package Mrazek to improve the defense Thomas was the best goalie in the league back then and Rask already on the verge of becoming elite..

So that comparison is too much. Nabakov Niemi - I'm sure there better examples - would be close.

Unlike Mike McKee. He's so underrated.

I agree that it's great for Mrazek's confidence. However, I do think it's more to just wanting Howard to get a few more days of practice and conditioning in before he's thrown in again. I'm sure they'd rather him get his first start in over a month against the Jets rather than against a pretty potent Penguins team. Petr has been playing great, but make no mistake, it's still Jimmy's net.

For now :ninja:
