I don't take it as not being a pushover...i view it as selfish. Sure, it his job. A job that he's had 4 times as long as 95% of GM's. That said, he knew what Yzerman meant to this franchise, the city, and to the Ilitch family. I'm sure he would have been paid as much. If he was so unhappy, most teams would have hired him id imagine. But he HAD to be the GM at the expense of Yzerman leaving...most likely to not return. That, to me, isn't balls...its almost disrespectful to the wishes of the owner and the fans.
If Illitch really wanted Yzerman to replace Holland, you don't think he could have done this? Pretty sure a franchise that has helped Russians defect, could force a current GM to step aside. To me, Ilitch was trying to do some damage control when Yzerman left (for the sake of fans like you) by saying "I love Stevie, I did everything I could to get him to stay", when really he was probably thinking "I love Stevie, but Kenny's the best GM in the NHL, so I probably shouldn't force him to give up his job to a rookie GM"
Really?!? Guys....anyone have the article? Do you know that that situation actually happened? Because it did.
Also, its one reason why people hated on George W and love Obamanation...its presence.
Holland has the presence of a man that can be persuaded to back down. Nill does not. I've met them both and seen countless interviews as well. Its the same you look for in a coach...one of the reasons i believe Dave Lewis failed. Lewis didn't have the presence to set a standard for the team...but Babs does and he knows how to use it.
You're so informed and enlightened, shouldn't you have the article? I'll wait patiently while you go and find me the article that states that Holland's boss gave him a direct order to do something, and he said no.
It's so awesome that we let Shanahan, Yzerman, and Nill walk and have Holland and Ryan Martin now. Anybody ever seen Holland and Martin in person? Especially Martin. Oh...I love Fischer, but he does not seem like a guy that should end up in the front office.
Holland and Martin both seem like huge pushovers, with Martin looking like and giving the vibe that he's never played hockey (although he may have) and has no clue what he's talking about. Nill, Yzerman, and Shanahan all have experience and the "i run the ship" look and personas. Im still pissed about how Ilitch asked Holland to step up and let Yzerman in and he wouldn't...YZerman should have been the face of this franchise and I'm sure Holland still would have had his prospect-giving-away hands all over everything anyway...
What kind of crap is this?
You have to strut around like Razor Ramon to be a good GM?
And as if Illitch asked Holland to step aside for Yzerman. And as if Holland would refuse.

Really what is going on with this team? Today another episode of giving up 3 goals after a lead. it makes me pull my hair out. The old wings knew how to shut it down with a lead, these guys look like they quit playing after they get the lead and then have to pull a win out of their a**. Anyone else frustrated seeing this trend lately?
what can be done to fix this? Who is to blame? Where are my meds? Sick of seeing it.
1. Half the league is good now. Games are closer. Teams are more even.
2. We lead the league in come backs when trailing after two periods and are 2nd only to Anaheim in wins when trailing IN the 3rd. Why must you be glass half empty?
