#2209559 Official Detroit Lions thread

Posted by 55fan on 25 September 2011 - 03:35 PM

It's good to live in Vikings country right now. My bf is not happy, but oh, well.

It's good to have so many targets for Stafford, and good for Stafford to be healthy.

#2208216 Howard Injured

Posted by zombi on 19 September 2011 - 10:49 PM

Hehe...

Just thought I'd get a good scare out of all of you. I was actually very concerned when I saw this on twitter, but it doesn't sound too bad.

Just a bone bruise on his foot.

http://redwingsfront...suffers-injury/

Howard suffers injury TRAVERSE CITY – In each of his first two seasons, every injury goalie Jimmy Howard has suffered has proven to not be serious.

It looks like his latest injury isn’t either.

Howard did not skate Monday at training camp after suffering a bone bruise on his left foot on Saturday. He did take part in practice on Sunday.

“It’s nothing major, just took a shot off the inside (Saturday) of my foot,” Howard said. “I tried to battle through it yesterday, it was really uncomfortable. They decided to keep me off the ice and hopefully it bounces back so I can get back out there tomorrow.”

Howard is slated to start between the pipes for Team Red in the Wings’ annual Red/White scrimmage at noon today at Centre Ice Arena.

“The shot was going high, I was going up so the first day I wouldn’t take it in the face and I ended up taking it right off the inseam when I was trying to get up,” Howard said.

Howard said the injury wasn’t serious enough to have an X-ray taken and he said he’s day-to-day.

“I plan on being out there tomorrow,” Howard said. “I got here early today, tried to get as much done as possible. It just didn’t happen.”

In each of the last two seasons, Howard has appeared in 63 each year. He won 37 games each season.

Thompson has done a great job but it's apples and oranges at this point. Mayhew was given an 0-16 team with Calvin and Backus as the only legitimate starters. In 3 years under Mayhew, in Pioli-like fashion, he's done great into turning garbage into mid-late picks and providing solid depth on the roster (finally) as well as making some key FA signings. I shutter at the players that Millen thought was good enough to compete at a high level but in reality would be 2nd-3rd backups.

I'm now at the point where I expect this team to win. They proved to me last season that they had the talent to keep it close but was without experience to get over the hump. This season I think they get over the hump, but are still 1-3 years away from being contenders considering they still have a bad line and the LeShoure injury could take him 2 years to be 100% or it could affect his play for the rest of his career (I'm hoping for the former obviously). The secondary looks solid, but is nowhere near what GB has.

So all in all, there's still areas of improvement, but I don't think they're that far off from contending the division like you think they are. After all, we lost a heartbreaker in Lambeau last season and got revenge the second time. Oh, and no injury excuses, our 3rd string QB beat you! :P

#2206776 Crosby's 2012 Season now in Question

Posted by Free_Candy on 07 September 2011 - 07:46 PM

I'll probably get more negative ratings from you old school hockey fight fans, but it was good to hear a player FINALLY say the NHL needs to ban head shots. Cindy made a good point that there's 50,000 hits a year and a ban on head shots would only effect about 50 of them, so the game won't change.

I for one do not want to see this type of press conference for Datsyuk, Zetterberg, or any other player in the NHL. Let's put a stop to head shots NOW!!

I hope Cindy continues to talk about this. I don't think he sucks, as much, anymore.

I'm chuckling because I'm giving a +1 to a post that says Cindy in it but I agree with the overall sentiment. And thank you for your well wishes in the other (Lokomotiv crash) thread (didn't want to take it off topic).

In general they sound pretty optimistic about his recovery and ability to play so far, I think the difference would be recovery time. In light of what we are continuing to learn about concussions, it sounds to me like players in the past just weren't taking enough time off to heal and that's had long term consequences. If this were 10, even 5 years ago he might have been back on the ice for the playoffs or something.

He may or may not be on the same trajectory as a player if he comes back, but in the end, for him and any other player that has suffered a brain injury, it isn't just about playing hockey longer term or even playing at all, it's also considering longer term quality of life outside of hockey. If it's one thing we've all been reminded of with today's tragedy, the players are so much more than just hockey players, they are also living, breathing human beings with loved ones and families, with lives that matter outside of hockey.

I do hope Crosby plays again, but where was he calling for head-shots to be banned when it happened to Marc Savard?

I know I gave Salei and McCrimmon endless crap, but I never wished for anything like this. Crossing my fingers that neither were on the plane, but I know the chances of that are slim.

Goddamn.

Fact of the matter is that there's a team's worth of families missing fathers, husbands, sons, brothers. People are missing friends, teammates, lovers.

I agree completely. I feel the exact same way you do and I'm just as hollowed out as anyone on this board. Just because I'm offended by people forcing their own beliefs on everyone else means I'm a horrible person who doesn't care? I'm sure I'm going to get massively negged by this, but I want nothing more than people keeping their beliefs to themselves. I'm not the one who brought up my religious beliefs. I don't want to hear that 13GoWings40 believes in god any more than anyone wants to hear I don't. Just as you're all compelled to respond to me, I was compelled to respond to 13GoWings40. Don't get mad at me just because I don't believe in god.

And neither do I want to turn this into a religious debate. If you have something further to say to me, my PM box is always there. Let's end it there.

Agreed completely. It's a shame some people have to flaunt it so arrogantly.

I read it and thought something probably pretty similar to what you did, but you didn't have to say anything out of respect. I didn't. This is about them, not you.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord;
even so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labors.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of thy
servant, and grant an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship
of thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth
with thee and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and for ever. Amen.

And here I thought we could get through this without some pretentious religious crap. <_< I'm sure Rusty's 3 1/2 month old son feels really blessed that god killed his dad.

Punched in the gut.

That is what I felt when I started reading this thread. I usually check LGW a couple of times a week is all in the off-season, and then a few times a day once the season starts. The last time I checked a couple of days ago I read about Belak, which was awful enough. Then today I log on to get my hockey update and get blasted in the gut with this tragic news. My mind immediately went back to one of the last posts I read on the Belak thread. Someone commented on all of the deaths so far and mentioned that it seemed the Wings organization was due for a tragedy.

I feel sick. RIP Men.....

#2206684 Crosby's 2012 Season now in Question

Posted by haroldsnepsts on 07 September 2011 - 01:48 PM

The whole point of the conference was Crosby and doctors talking about Crosby. If that's not the Crosby Show, I don't know what is.

All for: "I don't know when I'm coming back."

No one outside of Pittsburgh gives a s*** about him today. Dozens of hockey players died, leaving behind families and friends forever. Sidney is having headaches and might not play for a few months, or maybe he will. The conference was a whole lot of nothing being announced, while they're still pulling the bodies of hockey players out of the Volga.

Just wait one day; how tough would that have been?

He's not just "having headaches." He has a brain injury.

One could also argue that in light of today's tragedy, maybe we should all take a break from hating on players for petty reasons.
