#2651031 2016 Trade Deadline Thread

Posted by LeftWinger on 05 February 2016 - 01:00 PM

A few years ago I would've thought Tatar, and Nyquist would be a big part of the future, but so far this season neither one has been impressive...Can throw Abby, and his new contract into the mix as well.

Yes, but I am referring to "kids" to the tune of 25 or younger who may be here 15 - 20 more years.  I think Tatar still has his place on this team, but I am over Nyquist for some reason.  I guess we will have to see if he turns it up the rest of the way and makes his contract look like a steal (for us that is.)  I am a big Pulkamaniac, but he really needs to hone his game, or he will become just another promising AHL'r that can't translate to the NHL.  At this point I am not ready to give up on him, but if he were to be part of a package that would bring us what we need, I wouldn't be too upset...

#2651008 2016 Trade Deadline Thread

I`d be all over trading for Buff if it was a sign and trade type of deal. Although with the way the Wings O is looking a much needed sniper trade might be the best option. Stamkos or bust! The Red Wings have a large supply of young tradable assets to make deals. Hudler and Coliacovo will likely be our deadline deals  :scared:

SLAP!

I am still very open to Stamkos (and Drouin in a package) if it were to become a reality.  In that article, the author wrote that a deal would include Marchy, Mantha and Sheahan, along with Nyquist and two 1st round picks.  I'd hate to lose those first three players, but you do have to give to get.  It'd be nice if they'd take Helm in Sheahan's place, heck, he'd be a better return for Tampa, imagine his speed centering Johnson?  There is just no room here for him at the C positon and he is useless on the Wing unless he is on the 4th line.  Of course losing Mantha would stink, but you'd be basically swapping him for Drouin.  Marchy is NHL legit, but we do have XO, Sproul and Jensen who need a spot or be waived.  If we were upgrading or D as well by dumping Ericsson, then maybe losing Marchy wouldn't hurt as much when you factor in XO and Jensen are NHL ready as well....and Sproul to a certain extent.

Could you imagine for a moment (don't imagine the cap hit though! ) this team with Stamkos, Drouin and Byfuglien (or Yandle) on it instead of Nyquist, Helm and Ericsson? Absolutely not going to happen, but that would be a huge upgrade! To say the least!

And before all the critics out there pile on, NO I am n NOT saying that trading those three for the upgrades will be the deal.  Nyquist, Helm and Ericsson would be just three names involved in leaving this team in some form of package deal in order to upgrade with the others. Dumping Howard would also be part of this in order to relieve the cap!

I dream big, yes I know!

This team is boring.

There's nothing to really get excited about...Yeah - we'll most likely make the playoffs, but chances of getting outta the 1st round will be slim.

The direction of the club is questionable...It's getting to the point where I honestly don't feel we'll contend for the Cup anytime in the near future.

By no means will a trade likely make us Cup contenders - however after these past few nights - I think a move would be welcomed - to shake things up a bit on the roster.

I don't think anyone here is delusional enough to offer up 1st rounders for mediocre talent...Exchanging 'mid level' talent is more what I wouldn't mind seeing, but as usual I won't hold my breath.

Exactly why I think trading Jimmy now and bringing up Coreau wouldn't hurt us in any fashion.  Coreau can come in at his sub $1M contract and start every tail of back to back games and give up 4-6 goals.  Get that cap relief now and have it ready for July instead of over extending your cap and forcing yourself to makes cut in other places that you really don't want to, or getting less value because the rest of the NHL know you have no choice but to deal Howard or waive him (or some other player for relief.)

I am 100% convinced they need D and O upgrades now.  They need to ditch Howard NOW for his cap relief, I don't care if Coreau has 0 NHL experience, if they don't upgrade the O and D, they aren't getting out of the first round anyhow! If they even make the playoffs! It's just so tight right now, you have to be willing to make the bold move(s) to separate yourself from the pack.  A bad game or two and yor outside looking in...

I'm in for trying full throttle to get Byfuglien and a serious, SERIOUS upgrade in the sniper position!

I realize you don't want to bring Mantha or one of the D-Kids up to just sit, but having Andersson and Kindl back is of NO help.  Obviously Andersson didn't help on the PP the last two games, so there is no reason to say he is in to help on the PP.  You make a deal NOW, you get rid of Howard and Ericsson for the biggest cap relief, you send them in a package for something that is needed NOW.  You can send Nyquist and Helm, pick(s) and a couple prospects if needed.  This team is slightly above average, if it weren't for Petr and Dylan, basically two rookies, we'd be where Carolina or Columbus is right now, as a matter of fact we are only 4 points away from being Carolina! That is how tight it is and that is why Holland needs to make those moves to separate this team from the "average" pack.

I see Minny is out right now as well, maybe they could convince Suter to give the ok for a deal? :ninja: Just kidding!

I don't like his cap hit, but wonder what Staal would cost us? Or I wonder if, since Conor McNHL is back, if Hall would become available? Would either of those two upgrade our O? I believe they would.

Boy, Larkin and Stamkos look awesome out there together!! :ninja:

#2650709 All Star Skills Competition

Hmmmmm, Larkin being chosen as a rookie to go to the ASG.....NHL "fixing" the skills competition (some say) in order for Larkin to make a new ASG record for speed...Larkin is getting tons of NHL talk amongst the insiders around the league....could it be possible that the NHL is making Dylan Larkin the next poster boy for the NHL? Could Dylan Larkin be the next player that everyone talks about? Could this kid be the one that the NHL is putting the next 10 years or so on his shoulders to carry the NHL? I guess we will see if he starts making appearances in every NHL Network commercial....

Why even include Helm/PA? In PA Detroit would be getting a guy brand new to our system who could easily fail miserably, when in Helm we have a guy who fits in here and can be used in multiple roles, plus both are UFA so there is no difference long term. From Toronto's perspective, they gain nothing as again both are UFA's and they are a team with zero chance in making the playoffs. The only thing Toronto really cares about in a trade with us is building towards their future. No reason for either team to include those two.

I would love to have a player like Lupul, when he was in his prime and playing at 100%. I can remember watching him and loving the energy he brought to the Leafs. In 2015 he is a big cap hit, past his prime, and always hurt/injured (5.25/year, until 2018).

Phanuef scares me. Just look at how much everyone is freaking out about a caphit like Howard and E. Phanuef is signed until 2021 and has a caphit of 7mil/year. Do we really want to add that to the books. Now if TO would retain a portion of that, different story. But if I were TO I would wait until the right offer came along. Plus, people want to flip E for him, why would E waive his no trade clause to go to a place like TO.

After the failures of Modano, Weiss, Cole, Zidlicky (in the playoffs), Green (to a degree) etc. I dont think Holland will be going for guys from other teams that have downsides. Either keep building from within, or go big (ie. Stamkos).

I know we have to get rid of Howard's contract, and I believe Holland will, he just needs to wait for the right team. My guess is that he will trade him for a mid level pick and an expiring contract to offset the caphit for the other team (ie. a Philly/Mason situation).

I just used PA due to the 4thperiod.com list having our logo next to his name as if we were interested in him.  Phanuef (and Byfuglien) also have our logo by them as well.  I know its a grain of salt, but I was just inserting the names that Detroit "may" be interested in acquiring. I also used the logo factor with Howard since the Leaf logo is the only one by his name.  Lupul is on there with no logo, so I figured since they make similar money, ti could be a salary swap...

How about this?  Ericsson and Howard for Phanuef? Leave the forwards out of it, then maybe still shop around for some O upgrade.  BTW, I am not advocating getting Phaneuf, I'd much rather have Byfuglien, I am just commenting on some of the talk around about Detroit (yet again) being interested in him...

I know you qualified it, but I think it's even ridiculous mentioning it.

With Ken Holland as our GM... No way that is ever ever ever ever ever EVERRRRRRR happening.

I totally agree, maybe we keep 3 of them? I'd hate to deal away the prized RH'd guys that Holland has been grooming since he drafted them. Maybe if we have to deal 2 of them, maybe Sproul and XO? Yes, I am in camp Jensen, I think he is better than Sproul, I'd hate to lose him all together, but business is business, I understand.

No bashing, everyone and their brother's uncle's sister's best friend's milkman's dog's trainer realizes that Jimmy is no longer the starter.  I would like nothing else but to get rid of that contract (moreso than Jimmy himself) but as most folks here have mentioned, do we trust Coreau or McCollum to take over IF Petr gets injured?  I, myself, think that Coreau can't do any worse than Jimmy is doing right now, but we know Jimmy can do better, and probably will get a little better before the playoffs.  I am not saying he will reclaim the starting job (although no one can tell the future really) but, I think his trade value is very VERY low right now.  I believe keeping him through the season would be better, 1. because he can turn it up a bit and will serve as a good backup the rest of the season, and 2. IF he starts playing better, his trade value can only go up.  It's already very apparent to the rest of the NHL know who the #1 is, Petr has close to if not the best stats of all starters in the new year, he last 7 or 8 game 1.1 GAA with a 95% SV%...every team knows if Holland can find a quality B/U come July, he WILL be trading Jimmy. The Mrazek secret is out, come deadline, I guarantee his Larkin's names will be the most asked about for a return, in which Holland will have only one response....click! Although maybe there will be some offers for Jimmy that would include an expiring contract backup goalie with some playoff experience...For sure though, Jimmy's contract has to come of the books, especially with the players we need to re-sign and if Holland is seriously looking to upgrade the team via UFA/trade.

you are going to be impressed with Jensen once he gets a spot...

#2650184 2016 Trade Deadline Thread

Posted by LeftWinger on 26 January 2016 - 09:31 AM

Frank, I agree we should probably stand pat at the deadline, unless we're selling off a couple players, however Jurco and Pulkkinen are not the players we sell at this point. No team is looking to trade for these type players at the deadline, unless it's a rebuilding team, and in that case it would not be for draft picks, it would likely be for a player on an expiring contract, in which case, that would make us the buyers... I would trade Pulkkinen in a package, but I personally would not trade Jurco in any package right now. I still have confidence that he will be a legit top 6 forward in a couple years, and we would be trading him at an all time low right now. Both Jurco and Pulkkinen's keep value is much higher than their trade value. If we're looking to be sellers we can throw names like Quincey and Richards out there, and Helm as well if we don't plan on re-signing him... I think three of those players could be attractive pieces to a team that is looking to go on a deep run, and could garner a decent return...

100% agree! IF we were to fall into the selling catagory, players like those bolded would be the exact players a legit contender would be looking for to make a run at it!  If we aren't going to get any players in return at the deadline (BYf, Ladd, etc...) dumping expiring contracts like those to a team in the chase could bring us a few good draft picks. I could see a team like PIT taking Richards, Maybe LAK or ANA looking at Helm and maybe COL or SJS or maybe even FLA or CHI inquiring about Q to help solidify the back end for a run...

BUT, honestly, and you are ALL going to s*** when I say this, but if we lose out on a big name D man on the deadline or July 1st, the way he has been playing, I wouldn't be opposed to Q re-signing one more season as long as its not a raise or at the expense of losing one of the kids or free...We just have so many kids out of exemptions next year, if we're able to keep 3 of them, I think that wil be a win for us...don't get me wrong, I don't prefer Q over getting an upgrade, BUT as long as it's not a a huge raise, and he becomes a backup plan (yet again) it wouldn't be the end of the world, AS LONG AS it's not at the expense of losing a kid for free.  Now if we trade a kid ina package for some O upgrades or what not, so be it... I know a year from now, I am going to regret saying this, but as of today, I think Q is a very solid D man.  He and DD a very good together....he's better than E, thats for sure!

I am not sure his trade value can get any lower can it?  At least he still has time to turn his game around a bit to finish the season stronger. If he can, then maybe his value would increase a bit, but right now, it seems about as low as it has been his entire career...

#2649879 ROY according to LGW

Posted by LeftWinger on 24 January 2016 - 09:51 AM

Whats funny is, the guy only has 14 more points that Larkin, it's not like he is blowing Larkin out of the water in that catagory. Will he slow down, maybe not, but Larkin could go on a spree like he did to start the year and close that gap a bit...but everyone is talking that Panarin is "so far" ahead of Larkin, when in fact, 14 points is NOT unsurpassable. The fact that he was chosen to go to the All-Star Game speaks volumes of how he is viewed in the NHL, plus the fact that he is a 19 yo pure rookie, leading his team in points and the +/- speaks volumes too. I know the +/- stat is not the best stat, but since Panarin is only a +8 and Kane is +23, shows me that Panarin isn't on the ice in all the important situations as Kane and, in our case, Larkin is.

I am very bias and want him to win, but in reality he does have a strong case for actually winning it....that being said, so did Yzerman over Barrasso, Fedorov over Belfour and Zetterberg over Jackman...

One other thing we may be missing, what is the amount of games needed to be played by a goalie to qualify for having a rookie season, last year Mrazek played in 29 games, started 26. If he didn't qualify as a rookie last season, he could be up for it this season, right now he sits at .932 SV% and 2.03 GAA...3rd and 5th in the NHL repsectively. If not ROY then serious Vezina talk if he continues this pace...
