We all hate Toronto, but it's a real hockey city. Buffalo not so much. Can't blame him for choosing the Leafs over the Sabres.

Hockey city in what way? That they actually HAVE a hockey team?

I've been to both cities and NHL and AHL games many times. Toronto fans barely know who's on their roster. They don't watch the Marlies, who make the playoffs most years. The fans talk ALOT but ain't saying nothing.

In Buffalo, they are die hards. They know the game, their team and they love interacting with rival fans like myself and talking hockey. Great building and atmosphere.

It's not 1967 anymore, but Toronto still stakes claim on being the hotbed of hockey. Not even close.

If that were the case then Toronto wouldn't have had to so massively overpay him for the pleasure.  Hell, they could have offered roughly the same money as Detroit and been confident he'd come to Toronto because they could offer him all the "intangible" things Detroit coudn't.  They could have offered him immortality.  Legacy.  Prestige.  Greatness.

But it wasn't about any of that.  They had to massively outbid everybody because otherwise Babcock wouldn't have gone there.  They didn't give him that money out of the kindness of their hearts, and he didn't ask for it just for s***s and giggles.

It wasn't about winning, or family, or anything else.  Eventually, as these things often do, it all came down to cash.  Lidstrom stayed with the Wings for less.  So did Datsyuk.  And Zetterberg.  And Kronwall.  Because they wanted to win here.

Babcock didn't.

Zero respect in how Babcock handle this situation. I'd have respect for him, if at the outset he said, "listen, I'm going to where I can maximized my earnings and hopefully build a winner. In the end I wanna do what's best first and foremost financially for my family."

Instead he claimed it was all about Detroit, his "great relationship with Holland", he will not go to a rebuilding team, he wants a great group of up and coming players to coach and grow with.

And then ...... he picks Toronto.

No draft picks, no experience in management, not even a GM hired BEFORE the coach who can make his own decisions. Even with a GM, Shanahan and Babcock will have their private line to talk trades and personnel moves. A lame duck GM? Umm hmmm.

And wait until Babcock is asked questions like why he was in a Tim Horton's drive thru this morning wearing an American brand on his hat and not at the arena earlier figuring out why Kessel loves doughnuts more than back-checking.

And as expected he has an out clause and a front loaded contract to maximize his earnings before the wheels fall completely off, the city turns against him, and he is another lame duck coach who moves on.

The city ran Burns, Burke, Quinn, Maurice, Carlyle out of town and a few of those names were Gods at the time they signed there.

Zero respect.

Thanks for the Cup and helping our streak keep going. But greed is greed. There is no other way to look at this.

And as has been stated, a 100,000,000$$$$ don't mean a damn thing if you are losers and can't make or win in the playoffs. Yes, the cottage life up in the Muskokas in the summer is great. And the contract can buy you some very nice steaks in Toronto, but losing is losing and no amount of money can ease that pain for guys who only know how to win and only want to win. In a year, Babcock will be gray, the city will hate him, and they will wonder why the hell they are paying a coach 6 million dollars, when they have no first line, no defense, and no draft picks worth talking about. In 4 or 5 years - which is the minimum to even get through a rebuild - he won't be there.

This one has FAIL written all over it. And Babcock deserves it all. Good riddance.

Desperation move by the Leafs to do this now. IMO.

edit to add: If Babcock's stupid enough to go to the Leafs, then let him go.

Nothing can save that franchise, and their media and fan base are very much the problem. Plus they hire s*** personnel because they may be a friend or "former" superstar or "former" successful management guys. But nothing can help that team. Horrible drafting, horrible hiring, one of the worst teams in terms of depth in the league - especially their farm and overseas. I mean BUFFALO and CAROLINA are in better long term shape.

As for Babcock - there is ZERO chance he will go north. He might want a change of scenery, more money, more control or whatever else, but the man is NOT stupid and even with Shanahan up there, it's not a big secret their team is in shambles top to bottom. No plan, just like their Toronto Raptors who win almost by accident with MLSE as owners. The Leafs just figure they are a great organization because they are based in Toronto - hockey central for Canada.

I thoroughly enjoy watching such an arrogant city [why?] lose and lose and lose. As recently as yesterday, they were fawning over Tie Domi's son on Team Canada - all because Domi was a Leaf and is considered one of their best ever! LOL. The local media wouldn't shut up about him. He is a decent player but superstar in the making? Nowhere I have read.

All signs point to Babcock leaving but bet your last dollar it will not be to Toronto. Their media is ridiculous. Babcock will look at 28 other teams first.
